I had an appointment in Tooting, and have never been in the area before. I was pretty happy to wander about a bit and find a vegetarian/vegan restaurant, because the appointment took longer than expected and I was famished. I got there about ten minutes before they opened - they open at 12. After they put the sign outside, I walked in, and found a nice little well kept place, with friendly people ready to serve food. I had a tomato/bean soup, very filling, and a salad. The salad had a great rice and bean under it...the absolute best was the miso dressing! (I probably would have bought a bottle had they sold it!) Everything from the nice community feel of the people who work here to the amazing ginger miso salad dressing, to their homemade hummus, to the warm meals that are so nourishing. Whole Meal is a great place to load up on your veggies. If your palate is strictly vegetarian you will love this place because everything on their menu is animal-slaughter free. Their meals are made with the freshest ingredients and are hearty and tasty. Dining in this place is really relaxing. Classical music is playing in the background, making eating broccoli feel like diving into a Bach symphony. No item of food that they sell is particularly cheap though. A medium portion of vegetable bake is £5.50 and a bowl of soup with some fresh baked bread is £4. If you're vegan then you'll be able to eat some seasoned beans, but they use dairy in some of their products, so although they are kinder to the eco-system than most meat serving restaurants they still use some elements of calf in their a number of their dishes. read more

Okay it's a little squished with the tables but it's made up for with the friendly service, lovely fresh healthy food and large portions. I got a jacket potato and the mixed salad. It came on a plate piled with veggies and cheese and a HUGE potato. Me and my friend where literally stuffed and forcing ourself to finish every last scrap because of its yumminess. At first it seemed a little expensive (£7.50 for my meal) and then you realise, You get your money's worth! And compared to the measly salads you get in chain restaurants where you pay more often! This place really play with different textures and a mixed salad... Is a MIXED SALAD! On top of that the staff were lovely, friendly and helpful. One member of staff we wee chatting to has been there 15 years! Dedication. and loved working there and promoting what she does. That's a winner for a business for me. So lovely. Off the high street. Wholemeal has been in Streatham since the 1970s. They serve wholesome vegetarian food. I always get their salad with hummus - so filling! We also love their hommity pie and the vegetable bake always has plenty of cheese! Relaxed atmosphere and good prices. We go regularly and don't have a bad word to say about it! read more

Spent a good 2 hours trying to find this place as we are visiting London and I have a very strict diet. It is very hole in the wall but super welcoming! The woman behind the counter is very kind and helpful. The food itself is good but nothing super special. Overall it is worth trying if you are in the area. read more

This is one of the original hippie vegetarian diners in London, crammed full for as long as I can remember with CND stained-glass-effect window stickers, wind chimes and the smell of hot lentil pie. This restaurant and its ilk is not entirely my cup of tea, as the food and general feel of the place is more than a little 'worthy'. Vegetarianism has moved on since then. But it's a part of veggie history and the food is tasty enough. I'd also agree that if healthy and wholesome is what you want, this is an absolute oasis among Streatham's burger joints and chicken cottages. read more

Went for the first time on Saturday and loved it. Good value, proper tasty food and great service. Nice atmosphere without being smug or too "crunchy granola". I just read what the other reviewers said about Whole Meal and am absolutely shocked! It's amazing to have a lovely healthy veggie cafe inStreatham, an area otherwise populated by KFCs. I like actually like KFC , but sometimes you need to eat something with vegetables in it to ensure you don't, like, have a heart attack. I've eaten and taken-awayed their literally about 100 times and have never been disappointed. I cannot tell you how many times I've come home late from work and been grateful to grab a healthy bite near my house. My favourite is thehomity potato & cheese pie, with lots of salad - be sure to ask for the miso dressing. PS I read the Times and am not a social worker. read more

The reviews slagging this place off are ridiculous. I suspect the reviewers were looking for some fried chicken and walked past the entrance to KFC, which is a couple of doors up the road. Look, you are supposed to be able to taste the food that you eat. If it has no taste, it is rubbish. Whole Meal consistently produces high-quality vegetarian food at a very cheap price. The hummus is a good standby, but I normally have one of the daily specials, especially if it's curry. Oh yeah, I have never worked in the public sector and the only newspaper I read is The Financial Times. This place also does decent organic lager. Don't knock one of Streatham's best-kept secrets. read more

Off the High Road and only a few metres from the Police station, this is where to report your crime to food after eating at the Whole Meal cafe. A truly shocking experience in the realms of veggie eating. The food is stodgy or lettuce leaf heavy, lacking in taste and wholy unappetising. This place is really lovely. Unfortunately they don't have outside seating which would make it PERFECT. They have the best Banofee Pie EVER, as well as a good old fashioned Hominy pie for lunch or dinner, topped with loads and loads of fresh alad of your choice. It is all to die for. This is THE place. An oasis from the dross that is Streatham High Road. The staff are welcoming, the food is wholesome and the background music tasteful - everything from jazz funk to popular classics. All the food is lovingly prepared on the premises and there's no skimping on the amount you get on your plate. Fresh it certainly all is. When you're almost full, save a small place in your stomach for the wonderful fruit crumble, and hope it's plum - delicious! I have enjoyed many, many exquisite meals here at a reasonable price. I've been visiting the Whole Meal cafe occasionally for about 25 years and I suspect the menu is practically the same now as when it opened in 1978 i.e. the English idea of vegetarian food at that time based on brown rice and stodge generally. Their signature dish: Homity Pie is the epitomy of this. The food is OK but is dull and lacks variety. We visited yesterday and there wasn't a single dish including pulses or nuts. We had the Cajun stew which consisted of mixed vegetables (plus sweetcorn) with chilli (no additiaonal pulses or nuts for protein) and adding broccoli was a bad idea as it just went soggy. The accompanying brown rice was overcooked. There is so much more vegetarian food from around the world, whether Mediterranean, Middle Eastern or Indian. After eating there I am just disappointed it wasn't more exciting. read more

What I also like about this place is the peaceful and calming atmosphere. I've only been in at the weekends, and it's always pretty busy, but never hectic or boisterous. This place is a hidden gem in Streatham, South London. This is one of favourite local restaurants/cafe to visit. The portions are a decent filling size and the banoffee pie is always a must.
