Such nice energy for a gloomy Wednesday evening, really upbeat without being annoying, the perfect level of attentive. Go when he's there and reward his awesomeness as well! Okay, I decided this afternoon that I wanted a li'l blue plate special for dinner. And Husband wanted a burger. He got a spicy smash burger, the actual name escapes me. Spicy & smashed, she was! There was a good amount of heat from the pickled jalapeños so he took a few off. His recommendation is that they go for a smattering of the diced variety instead. (I've created a monster!!!) He was also very happy with his battered fries. Unless I'm misremembering, they remind me of A&W fries; not as seasoned or as battered as Checkers, but so good. What did I get? You're sweet to ask! I did three sides: garlic green beans, fried Brussels and fried okra. Yes, yes, and yes. They are so wild, I think all three were fresh! Can you even?! You know exactly what I'm talking about when I say frozen fried okra has a taste. If this was frozen ever, they need to patent that technology. The garlic green beans were giving Chinese food but better. Really balanced seasoning, good crispness, flavor. Green, if you can imagine! And the Brussels sprouts... With bacon and sauce... Those leftovers will hate to see me coming. "Leftovers?" I sense you ask incredulously. Yes. Because while perusing the menu online, I saw a nice, big picture of their Butter Toffee Cake. And I was instantly imbued with the knowledge that this cake would heal all my past traumas, pay off my student loans, and give me winning lottery numbers. Only time will tell on all counts. But if you order one thing at that restaurant, I demand it be that cake. The person handling those cakes went to the Hogwarts' Academy of Culinary Wizardry. I can hardly describe it and I have no idea what flavor ice cream is on top except it's the best one. If you like food, but especially butterscotch, or not - you need this cake. I blacked out after that and woke up here on Yelp, so... Please go try that cake.

That adds up if you like to frequent a place. Hence, we stopped frequenting. Overall, I like the decor and as noted, the food is decent. The upstairs is better than the downstairs but I'm glad they have the downstairs for some occasion when they could get busy. As for the Tavern / entertainment element, I've never seen any live music but they have several TVs. Not sure this would be my top choice to watch a game but it would work in a pinch if the other places were too busy or noisy.

The friendly and attentive waitress was quick to correct the missing sauce, although it did take awhile. My meal also came with a side of slaw that would have been outstanding if the kitchen hadn't made a misstep of loading it with too much salt. The other seasonings in the slaw were excellent and unique and the addition of red onions was great, but sadly ruined by the saltiness. At the end of my meal I visited their modern and stylish restrooms. I'd arrived just after 5PM and on this weekday there were only a few patrons. So the stylish furnishing of the restroom were marred by the mess I encountered in there. Based on the number of employees compared to patrons, there wasn't an excuse for not cleaning that bathroom. I've seen truckstop restrooms that weren't that nasty.

For side we chose the creamed kale and risotto. Before our dishes came out I had the kitchen salad with bleu cheese dressing and their complimentary bread. The dipping sauce was nice and a real twang. It was nice and unique for a few bites, but the vinegar was too strong to enjoy it past a few tastings. The salads were nice but nothing terribly exciting and with big leafs of greenery on a flat plate to challenge your dexterity. My pork chop was perfectly cooked and the flavors were fantastic. I'm not a kale fan, but there take was very good. Although the amount of lemon used in the flavoring was a bit too strong for more than a few bites. My risotto also had a sour note, but not as strong, and they were wonderfully creamy. We sampled each other's entrees and I'm not a fish person, but I almost (but not quite) almost regretted not getting the trout. It was absolutely delicious. And the sauce on my pork chop was fantastic. At the end of our meal I visited the restroom, which was where things turned downhill. I know older buildings can be a challenge to keep nice, and there's no predicting when a previous patron can leave a mess. I barely remember what I ordered. Here is what makes it a one star review : We were surrounded by multiple tables of young teens. Like 12 -14 years old. There had to have been around 20 of them yelling and talking loudly the entire time. Our table became surrounded by them. Not a parent in site. They over took the tables in the bar area. We left before being done eating. Awful experience. Whoever the manager on duty was should be fired. To allow your bar area to become a teenage hangout is unacceptable.
