European train stations are so nice. This one has 3 floors of restaurants, shops and even an IKEA . Didn't have enough time to see the IKEA but I saw the elevator stop. It's a large railway station with multiple platforms on different floors. It's spacious and very clean. Signage is so very clear and also in English. Besides the shops and the cafes, there is something so touching and always worth noting. There's a statue memorializing the Kindertransport. The statue is of a young boy sitting on a suitcase. This was the train station in 1938 that took over 10,000 young children from Austria, Germany and Czechoslovakia, separating them from their parents, and transporting them to England so they wouldn't face Nazi Persecution. It's a poignant statue and the trauma these children faced should never be forgotten read more

It'd been a while since I got semi-lost in a major transportation hub, but there I was--just having arrived in Vienna by train and unsure of where to find tickets and the transfer to the S-bahn local commuter line. I've been in some confusing huge stations in other countries and usually am quite adept at reading signs and finding my way, though for some reason between the time when my friend and I alighted the platform (regional train arriving from Bratislava), then walked towards the signage for transfers--the roughly 8-10 minutes (this part was fine, we were heading in the right direction) we were walking closer to the S-bahn area I didn't see any ticket machines or offices until we were almost at the stairs/elevators that led up to the S-bahn platforms. Maybe was the route we walked, or because it was an internal transfer and not coming from a building entrance where more machines might be located? Right before the S-Bahn train section, thankfully a Wienerlinnen office appeared, and we bought our tickets, but then we found the smaller departure screens showing S-bahn departures confusing because we weren't familiar with the lines. The screens showed line number, times and the starting and ending stop names though because of they showed both, it was unclear which direction it was headed. We had to rely on time of train matching to g-maps next expected train departure time and hope we got on the one heading the right direction. Thankfully once we got on the S-bahn train itself, the screens were super clear on which were the upcoming stops. The station was very modern, clean, and seemed to have a lot of stores and amenities. Inter-country trains, regional trains, S-bahn (local commuter line), U-bahn (metro), trams, buses, taxis and ride shares are all available from this location, making it a major hub. Overall signage was pretty clear so I have to wonder if my experience above is specific to the route I happened to take between trains that day. At the Wienerlinnen office, there was a short line of about 5-7 minutes around 3:30pm, the gentleman at the counter was very friendly and helpful. If I'm ever back in Vienna and need to travel to/from here, I will make sure to allot enough time to find my way around! read more

Wien Hauptbahnhof aka Vienna Central Station aka Vienna hbf aka Wien hbf is a the main train station to get into Vienna. I first came here when I traveled for several hours from Llubljana, Slovenia, and got off here to start my adventures as a tourist for my first time in Vienna! It's a huge, bustling station, and can be easy to get overwhelmed here. If it wasn't for a friend, I might have trouble figuring out how to exit and where to go. Days later, when I boarded the train to head to Prague, Czech Republic, I accidentally boarded the wrong Prague-bound train. Busy? Yes, but super easy to navigate. We followed the advice of The Man in Seat 61 and found the RegioJet office for our train to Prague quite easily. Like any train station in Europe, this one had plenty of places to shop and/or purchase a meal at. Seating, on the other hand, was a little more sparse, unless you were eating somewhere. It was clean and modern, but the acoustics made it fairly loud...there isn't much around to absorb the sound. This was the station where the train from the airport arrives. We passed through it twice (coming and going) but initially had an issue navigating. We arrived on the airport train and exited down some stairs. We wound up in a sort of dead end which did not seem to connect with anything else. We consulted maps and were somewhat confused. Eventually we backtracked up to the railway platform and walked to the opposite end. Here, there were actual signs and other stairs leading down. This time, though it did connect to the subway, which is what we were looking for. I think they could use some additional signage at the far end of the station to help people figure out the connections quicker. Once we understood the layout, it was easy, though. There were multiple levels of stairs and escalators, but I think they did have elevators for those with a lot of luggage or mobility issues. We did run into at least one instance later in the trip of a train station that was not connected to the subway. However, this place is definitely well connected. read more

Finally, an easy to navigate train station. This one is very big, but boards are easy to follow. We learned our lesson earlier in the trip to be on time as these trains don't wait. A very clean station. Locals were helpful when we needed to ask questions. Best to arrive early. They have shopping and many food options while you wait for your train. Yelp Review 2023 #272 Getting to different parts of Austria and neighboring countries is easy. You can catch a train or a bus from Wien Hauptbahnhof. You can buy your ticket online or at the station. I recommend buying online because I can't even tell you where to purchase tickets because this is a big station and it's crowded especially on the train station side. The bus station side was chill. I took an overnight bus to Bratislava from here. There's really no telling what time the buses will actually be there until you get to the station and read the board/ signage. Sometimes the bus gets there 10 minutes early, sometimes it's 10 minutes late. So, be at the staton 20 minutes early just to be safe. There was only a few of us waiting for the bus. The waiting area for the bus is outside with only a very few benches. But you only have to stand and wait for about 20 minutes so, it's not a big deal. The train station side has seats and you're inside so you can stay warm. There's snack stalls you can buy coffee, soda, water, chips, candy, chocolate, sandwiches, etc. I'm a solo traveler and I was here at night (11pm). I felt safe. No problems, no issues. read more

I really love Vienna's main train station. It's modern, clean, has tons of windows and glass so it feels airy and spacious, and it's easy to navigate. It has just about everything you'd want in a European train station. Hubby and I missed our first class (do'h!) train to Prague by ONE MINUTE (it was literally pulling out of the station as we were running to hop on), so we had to waste two hours here until the next train came through. I was pretty frustrated, but the niceness of the station helped calm things down. There are lots of unique shops and good quality eateries with plenty of seating. Most of the shops and restaurants are open on Sunday. The people watching is good too, and the station feels very safe. It's easy to reach the station via public transportation, which I'd recommend as we took a taxi from our hotel and that's why we were late for our train (traffic was so bad and our driver was so slow)! You can get to the station on the U-Bahn subway (line U1), the streetcar (lines 18, O), or by public bus and the S-Bahn. read more

This will mark my second time visiting Austria, but first time visiting Vienna. This was the station that we decided to get off at from our train that came from Budapest. I'm so very jealous of the transit options available to Europeans, the system is just so efficient and fast. I was able to purchase my tickets from the OBB app in advance and got to ride one of their nicer trains to Vienna. The Hauptbahnhof station is the main stop for visiting central Vienna. A very modern station that's only a several years old, it's quite large. It's also connected directly to a mall, that was dead when I went through it. Lots and lots of places to grab fast food along with a full on grocery store where you can get produce along with baked pastries. I found the entire place to be quite clean and very efficient. Directly outside are more local transit options, however I decided to walk around instead. read more

Easy to get to, easy enough to navigate. Decently clean for a main transit hub. I left from the Wien Hbf to get to Prague for a week. Tickets were fairly priced, the staff was helpful and friendly when I had questions. We weren't here for long. Took the train from the Rennweg station and transferred to our inter-city train here. This is one busy train station. It can be confusing to find your way around. just make sure to follow the signs. There's plenty of sitting areas and stack places or a place for a whole meal. Gayle and I arrived at Wien Hauptbahnhof via a direct train from Prague. Getting here was much more than half the fun, as our 1st class car was a most pleasant journey. At the time we traveled, there was a lot of news about Syrian refugees arriving in Vienna. We didn't see any of that at this train station, but did hear a lot of people talking about it. As for the station, our experience was limited to getting off the train, finding our way to the central hall and exit, and finding a cab to take us to our hotel. All that went very smoothly, although subsequent traffic was a bit of a mess. I would have expected a much fuller experience at Wien Hauptbahnhoff is we were checking into this modern station, doing a little shopping, and wandering around a bit. Ok, so this is the massive depot for nearly all forms of public transport around Vienna and Europe. Firstly, it's huge, and it's very busy. Given my first two points. It's also really clean, very easy to navigate and quite fun to explore. The automated ticket machines were simple to use and I had purchased tickets to Bratislava for a day trip within minutes. The monitors were easy to read and with about 45 minutes to kill, I went to grab a snack and had a sit down since I had the time. Cafes and food stores are located to the sides leaving plenty of room for people passing through. Once it was time to go, the platform was easy to navigate and I hopped on without issue. A totally stress- free experience which is exactly what I'm after when travelling. It's conveniently located near Belvedere castle (just on case you're sightseeing on your way) and overall an enjoyable experience, who would've thought! read more

Reviewing train stations is always interesting... What interesting about this place, is if you take away the top floor with all the train tracks, what you get instead is a shopping mall. It is very good for some train stations to have a few eateries, and maybe a shop or two... here it is a legitimate shopping mall. Anyways, the transfer from the U1 line can be a little confusing at first, since you will first see tracks 1 and 2 (only S - Bahn, I think). You have to actually go into the station and go up two floors to get to the actual station. Plenty of signage inside the station telling you when you train is leaving and such... However, one thing that this station does NOT have (as well as other Austrian stations) is signage on the platforms pointing to where your car is. When I was in Italy, there was a sign next to each car on the platform that would show you what car that was. When your train is leaving soon, and you need to find where the car numbers are hiding on the train, it can be quite stressful. Station seems pretty safe, it is well lit, there are police and security routinely patrolling... However, there is no security office in the station (that passengers can go to) there is only a police station out the door and across the street. Station is clean, and so are bathrooms (but you have to pay to use them). Ample seating... would like more, but since people don't get to train stations as early as they do to airports, I cannot blame them too severely for the lack of seating. Finally, contrary to what another Yelper mentioned, elevators are in working order. read more

I was lucky to be given a tour recently of the new Hauptbahnhof by one of the project engineers. It was very interesting being behind the scene (hinter den Kulissen) of all the construction. I could easily begin to visualize the completed public spaces. They are working fast and it is looks like it is going to be an awesome train station. We arrived at nearly midnight to the station after a train from Venice. We did not have a chance to look over the entire station but we were certainly impressed with the cleanliness of our platform area and the modernity of the station. Getting a nighttime look at the outside, it also gave the impression of a nice architectural specimen. Even at that late hour, it was not hard to find a taxi to our hotel. Wien Hauptbahnhof is only ten years old, but it's an excellent model for how transit hubs should be. well-placed signage in several languages, and extremely clean. and free wifi. there's offices if you need help and they seemed to be open pretty late. plenty of food options - like most transit hubs, don't expect gourmet dining, though with some fast casual choices you can find some (relatively) healthy eats. or, you could hit up the leberkas sandwich joint. or both! choose your own culinary adventure! there's shopping as well - most importantly, there's a small supermarket which is open late and open on weekends (useful for essentials), as well as a larger one open during the week. honestly, the prices of things in the shopping areas aren't that bad - they are comparable to the prices seen in the shops on Favoritenstrasse. connections to several different mass transit systems, as well as rail connections to other cities and countries of Central and Eastern Europe. most importantly, there are direct connections between here and the airport that leave roughly every half hour. kudos to a certain lovely Australian for that tip ahead of time. read more

This is the main train station terminal in Vienna. Clean, safe, convenient and a very efficient layout. It has a mall inside the main area with shops, restaurants, ticket kiosks and staffed ticket counters. It is a testament to what mass transit should be. Free wifi is picked up at one of the several restaurants located throughout the mall area. There are stairs, escalators and elevators to reach the train platforms which are mostly covered from the elements by an artistic diamond shaped roof. Train arrival and departure information is posted on television monitors located throughout the entire terminal. We did not encounter or see any panhandlers or shady looking characters, so we felt very safe while waiting. read more

What a nice new clean station! Lots of stores and other services are available as well as many forms of public transport, U-bahn, S-bahn, train, tram, bus. They also have seating here where you can sit and wait for your train... this is almost unheard of unless you are in a first class lounge in other stations, a very nice touch. Everything here is super clean and really new. My only complaint is that it is a bit far from everything, the entire area is still very much so under construction. read more

This recently built train station is very modern and well labeled. I feel quite safe here unlike a lot of train and bus stations around the world. The ticket counter staff is friendly and fluent in English. Dogs are welcome. Many shops and restaurants are in the station. They offer take away or you can eat at the comfortable tables nearby with European power outlets and use the train station's free wifi. The u1 subway and multiple trains and trams are just outside. You can buy tickets at a kiosk if you wish. Apparently they never sell out seats but you will want to reserve one during busy times if you don't want to stand. The WiFi on the trains work in Austria only. Bring euros with you if you plan to use the cafe car. Plenty of room for carry on luggage above you and luggage racks for large ones. They've got some tables, Usb charging under your seat and a shade you can pull down if your neighbor doesn't mind. read more
