After the floods we had here the Council was hit very hard and completely ruined. To their credit…read morethey got the customer contact centre back up and running and I think it is a much better system now. When you enter the mainreception you get a ticket relating to which service you require. YOu then wait in a large seating area until your number is called and it also comes up on a screen. I have found that it is better to go first thing in the morning or late afternoon as you will get seen quicker. YOu have to go through this system for whoever you want to see at the Council but it is very easy. In the main area there are lots of little private rooms and you can also go to a window to make a council tax or parking fine payment without taking a ticket. There is a security guard here who is very knowledgable and will help you decide which button you need to press for your ticket relating to who you need to see. There is parking at the front, but as Carlisle is a Disc parking zone you do need to display one unless you want a parking fine, although you can get them from inside the Council and if you don't have one they will give a little leway to nip in for it. They have always been really helpful with any issue I have ever gone here with and the staff are very helpful and friendly.

If there was a capital of the Lake District, it would be Keswick…read more Oh, sure, Carlisle is the capital (aka "County Town") of the surrounding county within which the Lake District lies. But it -- and other big Cumbrian towns, Whitehaven, Workington, Penrith, Barrow-in-Furness, and Kendal -- all are outside of the Lake District. Keswick can be found in the north-central part of the LD, on the banks of the area's most prominent and loved lake, Derwent Water. To me, Keswick -- a 700+ year-old (!) town -- is the place to stay if visiting and exploring the Lake District ... or anywhere in Cumbria, for that matter. I recommend seriously considering on a "Farm" ... a name attached to many of the B&Bs in the area. Or there are plenty of B&Bs right in the heart of the city that still feel "away from it all". And, as with many scenically beautiful places, has plenty of options for campers, glampers, and caravaners (the popular Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club is at the fork of the Greta and Derwent rivers). As for what to see and do in Keswick, it starts with Derwent Water. There's a lot more to do than just look at it (which is okay too!). First, of course, you'll want to get ON the water. I've kayaked and canoed, and you also can sail, windsurf, and paddle standing up. The Lake District is also famous for Ghyll Scrambling ... traversing rocks, climbing waterfalls, boulder-jumping, sliding down creeks, diving into deep water pools ... and Derwent Water is the perfect place to do it. I recommend starting with Derwentwater Marina to plan your water fun. There are also many nearby fells (as known as "big hills"). The best (IMHO) is Walla Crag, as it has the best view of Derwent Water, the town, and Skiddaw. Speaking of Skiddaw, England's sixth highest mountain, is great for hikers. The famed "Skiddaw Walk" to the summit and back (close to 11 miles) is a great way to spend a day. It is, IMHO, a perfect city for cycling ... the city isn't too highly trafficked to turn off the leisurely rider or too expansive for the short-distance rider. Several places, including Keswick Bike, have bike hires. And it's just a great town for exploring, shopping, eating, and just wandering around. I love it as much now as my first visit more than 30 years ago. I hope to see you there!
