Two of the horses on a sunny July day

The horses look great from afar and we decided to take a closer look while driving across the State. There is a turn off where you are able to park and walk up the steep hill to the bronze horses. The terrain was very slippery and large rocks were jutting out-I was actually worried about some elderly people that were trying to navigate up the hillside. It is unfortunate that the county couldn't have added some steps to ensure a safe passage for visitors who wanted to take a closer inspection. Once at the top, we were dismayed that there was not even a simple placard or artist statement anywhere to be found. What a disservice to the created behind these huge sculptures. Additionally, the back side of the two dimensional horses, were all graffitied. Absolutely disgusting to see someone's hard work defaced. Great from a distance-I wish I would have left it that way. Curiosity killed this cat.

Paved road on left, horses atop a hill on the right.

Finding Wild Horses Monument from Interstate 90 (I-90) is straightforward. I came to the site on Wednesday the 12th of August 2020 and found the Washington State Department of Transportation has the site well marked with signage along I-90 heading both directions (eastbound and westbound). Additionally, on a clear day the metal wild horse sculptures are visible from the interstate, as is the turn-off to reach them. With the current wildfires in Washington State and thick smoke, they might not be as easy to view from the road today. Let us hope vandals do not take the signage for everyone situated along the highway and marking the way away. The turn-off to the wild horses is paved, which is nice on one's car. No potholes when I drove this way. There is a parking lot at the base of the hill on which the metal equines are located. From this parking lot I could view both the Columbia River and the Wild Horses. I grabbed my over-sized lunch box filled with ice packs, fries, dipping sauce, and a King's Row Special burger from King's Row Drive-In and headed towards the horses. I had bought the meal earlier in the day and put it on ice packs to keep the meat from going bad so I could eat it later. Climbing the trail to the wild horses with one hand occupied with a lunch box was fun. Provided an exercise in balancing myself on a steep dirt path with more weight in one hand than the other. I find leaning ever-so-slightly towards the hill when going uphill or downhill on a steep slope helpful if one slips and/or falls. It cushions the fall and gives me a little more preparation for getting my hands out to catch me on the fall. At the top of the hill runs the team of metal Wild Horses. The term 'team' is the technical term for a group of equines (in this case horses). I walked amongst the horses taking in the glory of each horse individually and as a team. Making my way forwards in the team I decided to eat beside the lead (first) horse. There was a flat rock for me to sit on and I had a great view of both the horse team and the Columbia River as I ate my supper. After eating I made my way back down to my car and headed on to the next stop on my day's driving adventure.

My little cowboy would like to have a horse. This place is the exact right place. On the peak, you can have a overlook of the Columbia River. Nice stop for the trip to the east of Washington.

I could see this being a great hangout. Unfortunately, we were quite disappointed in the pizzas themselves. Despite the creativity of the flavors, the execution was lacking. The pizzas were incredibly greasy. I was blotting my slices with a napkin. Even my kids, who aren't the healthiest of eaters, disliked them. My son, the cheese fanatic, said there was way too much cheese on his. My husband, being too smart for that nonsense, asked for a Thai pizza without cheese or meat. Unfortunately, that meant no flavor. Basically, it was just raw veggies placed on a pizza crust. We regularly eat vegan Thai pizza from a popular chain in the area, so we know flavor is possible even without cheese and meat. If we lived in the area, I could see coming back and trying additional combos. Some of them sounded healthier than the one I picked. I really did like the service and ambiance.

Stopped at the John Hill Rest stop on I-90 Eastbound, as I was looking for food on Yelp. I found this place. It was just under 20 miles from the rest stop in Ellensburg. It took about 20 minutes to get there and I found it right away. I had ordered the margarita pizza. When I walked into the restaurant, the smell was amazing. The girls at the counter were so nice had my pizza waiting for me. They provided me with napkins and I was able to pick up some pepper packets and also the little cheese packets. I went out to my car, open the pizza and it was amazing looking the crust was crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside and the taste of the sauce and the cheese and the basil were so yummy. If you need a quick bite and you're on your way to Spokane, or on the way eastbound on I 90 stop by this place it's amazing!

Parking is a bit of a hassle and we ended up paying the $10 for hotel, parking in a lot around the corner. It was worth it as we could walk to restaurants within blocks of the hotel. As for the room itself, it was moderately sized but we had room for all our gear without tripping over anything. The king sized bed was comfortable with 5 pillows provided (the norm seems to be 4 nowadays). The room was very quiet but the bathroom has a sliding barn door which unfortunately doesn't muffle bathroom noises which should be private. Decor is soothing warm neutrals with a small sofa and a desk chair provided for seating. There is a small frig but no microwave. Keurig is provided for in room coffee but I would recommend going down to the lobby where fresh brewed coffee seems to be provided. 22/7. We did not check out the rooftop garden due to the weather. Would've enjoyed a drink in the cozy bar adjacent to the lobby but it doesn't seem to be open yet. I would definitely stay here again should I have the need to overnight in Ellensburg.

So last week, on my way to Seattle I decided to stay the night in beautiful Ellensburg, WA (home to Central Washington University). Since it was just for a couple nights, I decided to get something downtown so I could walk around. I found Hotel Windrow online, booked the room and what a fantastic surprise. This boutique hotel is indeed RIGHT downtown. It's stylish, easy to find, obviously in a great location, and the property includes a hip little lobby bar a space called 'Top of the Berg' which is a rooftop area with fire pits, etc. very cosmopolitan. The rooms were lovely, very homey with a small couch, desk, large bathroom and comfortable bed. I walked two blocks to a fantastic Italian meal (more about that in another review) and overall, had a truly fantastic and easy night. A couple amenities to highlight include ample parking and electric charging spaces for electric cars or hybrids. I love finds like this, and plan on making at least one night stay over a regular occurrence now if I'm traveling on I-90. Recommended.
