The market combines food, crafts, and entertainment to brighten up the long winter nights. After you've selected a tasty treat, you can grab a seat at the pop-up cinema, check out the live music, or snap a picture with one of the roving performers. (On the night I visited one of these "performers" was a goat in an onesie. While I suspect he wasn't one of the official acts, he was the most popular.) There are plenty of hearty Melbournians out and about to create a festive atmosphere and it's not nearly as crowded as its sister, the summer Suzuki market. This makes it an easy place to meet up with friends and have a chat while browsing the stalls. Be sure to rug up! Fires and heat lamps keep the cold at bay, but it's an outdoor venue. If you're still feeling chilly, then wrap your hands around a toasty cup of mulled wine - it will warm you up inside and out!

You get to walk in and take as many pics as you'd like. Then, you go down stairs into the basement. And then, on the way back you go up to the rooftop. The rooftop has great views of the city and surrounding areas. I took a ton of pics up there and we had a great time. After that, you'll walk back down to the 2nd floor and take more pics inside. I can't believe how much original stuff is still here. Great way to spend an hour.

Reasonably priced and a great selection of products. If you ever want to prepare a meal, there's great selection.. Market city coffee was fantastic, bought some cheeses, and picked up a borek pastry. Market is separated into different buildings. Seafood, deli and meats, and I didn't get to walk to the produce section. I stopped in at nine, but according to Google, it opens at six. In a shopper. Owner told me they close at three on the weekdays and four on the weekends. Open every day!

Really great lively atmosphere with lots of people and the large downtown buildings in the backdrop of the market were beautiful! There was a great fruit and vegetable selection - I choose a few different fruit options to take back to my hotel later to enjoy. I LOVE mangosteen but it's hard to get fresh ones in the US so was super stoked to see those available! The indoor section with cheeses, meat and seafood was also super impressive! Mind you, I wouldn't go as far as calling it an icon, because it isn't as if people come to Melbourne just to see 'The Public Purse'. Yet, it is one of those places that could serve as a meeting spot, if it wasn't for the fact that there happen to be some clocks on Flinder's Street Station where people do the exact same thing.

Melbourne has some of the best examples of art-deco architecture, its easy to forget to look up and…read moreappreciate the innovation and beauty of these inter war buildings. Newspaper house is a classic example of the deco style and features an intricate mosaic by one of the leading artisans of the times. The mosaic is a scene of transport and technology, trains, ships, cars etc which reflected the periods technological advancements and modernist influence. "I'll put a girdle round about the earth". The mosaics text summarises the periods technological influence and its shrinking of the globe, specifically communication and news. The buildings facade was designed and built in 1933/34 (if you look closely you can see the date in the mosaic) for the then owners 'Herald and Weekly Times ltd'. Apologies for going all eccentric art historian, I just think its a cool artistic/historical statement that locals and tourists should understand and enjoy. I'm not sure why it is so famous, though I suspect that it has something to do with it always being there. For a while it wasn't actually working, but it looks as if somebody decided that it would be a good idea to restore it, and now it basically does what it is supposed to have been doing, and that is show young girl playing skip rope. Sure, it might not be one of those fancy, modern type if images, but it does hail back to a time gone by, and continues to add that the character that is Melbourne.
