We took a baby house sparrow here. Lots of places won't take these birds because they are non-native. These guys do. The woman who took the sparrow thanked us profusely and gave us a card with a patient number on it. My husband emailed them the other day, and they replied back that it was doing fine and would someday be released. They try to take the animal back to the same spot it was found. It was way out of our way, but we made a day of it and had nice lunch in town. A small price to pay! read more

We are lucky to be in an area where there are plenty of wild animals, raccoons, skunks, coyote and all types of birds. Besides the nightly visits by the racoon family, we have a family of skunks. Just recently a single skunk showed up in the evening that was wobbly, limping and generally not behaving like a healthy animal. It ate the cat food and came around a couple other nights until it started to show up in the daytime. Not good. The limp was very pronounced and today when "skunky" was found curled up next to the sliding glass door and then later in the morning in an open area, noting that it was appearing very weak, I called and spoke to Barbara. She told me to call the Humane Society and an officer would be dispatched. I watched Skunky move slowly around the area looking as if it was trying to find a place to sleep comfortably. Lisa arrived shortly and with great care and stealth, she captured skunky in a 5 gallon bucket, fastened the top and put him in the truck. No spraying. Right before Lisa arrived Barbara called and asked me to tell Lisa that the Wild Care people had prepared to receive the animal for immediate attention. Great job by Wild Care and Lisa of the Human Society for their quick response. I will follow up to learn how "Skunky" recovers. read more

My friends and I were walking on lower Haight when our dog noticed an injured juvenile hummingbird. We scooped it up (to the relief of all passersby who felt guilty but didn't know what to so) and immediately took it home to give it nectar and find an emergency wildlife center. It was 6:00 pm on Friday July 3rd, all shelters had closed for the holiday and hummingbirds are not only protected but also have little survival time to get to someone who really knows what to do. WildCare stayed open for us and immediately put the bird in the hands of foster care. They were amazing. I didn't even know the place existed and encourage anyone of any age to pay them a visit and/or volunteer. read more

Updating my review on 7/17/13 - I have brought four injured wild birds here since March, and they have done an AMAZING job rehabbing them. Xrays, incubation, tube feeding, no effort was spared. And, they called me when they were ready to release them and gave me the option of releasing them back where I found them. In one case I did that, but in the other case they were babies so I knew they hadn't found mates, and WildCare likes to raise babies together in an aviary so I figured they had bonded with their buddies at WildCare so I didn't come and get them. I cannot tell you how much I {heart} WildCare these days. If I lived closer I would volunteer for them. They are wonderful. read more

Took my group to visit Wildcare today and had a great experience! It was a busy morning and volunteers were out showing animals and answering questions. When we first arrived I wasn't sure we would get much out of the visit, but it ended up being fun and educational. Wildcare is Awful now.. They used to be good 15 years ago but now no one will ever call back or answer the phone.. I've called several times left messages.. I called Marin Humane Society about my problem and they pushed it off to WildCare.. When I was a child there was always someone who would come out to help.. Now just silence.. My family and I have been attacked 3 out of 4 nights by a pack of 6 raccoons at my house in Mill Valley and it's still daylight(6pm) by a few hours.. What will it take for WildCare to CARE? read more

After volunteering with wildlife (lions specifically ) in Africa I came back to the Bay Area determined to do something for local wildlife. I found WildCare, went to the orientation session a month later and have been volunteering ever since. Now heading into my fourth year. The people here work tirelessly to do what is best for any animal that comes in. I'm on the raccoon and squirrel team and know, first hand, the lengths to which we go to save an animal. We're now the only organization in the Bay Area that rehabs pigeons - just this year I drove 120 miles, round-trip, to pick one up. My life is so much better for being involved with WildCare, I feel really privileged to be a part of what they do. read more

Well, found a Western Pond Turtle under very suspicious circumstances including a reputed fishhook in the poor thing's mouth. I certainly wasn't going to check and see if there was one in there but the "owner" who claimed ownership said that was the way to tell it was his. Naturally I called the Marin Humane Society and they referred me here. They were wonderful. They identified the turtle, sexed it, (female) and let me know it was an endangered species and therefore should be a "pet." They later took an x-ray and confirmed the presence of the hook. Their going to do surgery later to remove it and then release it back into the wild. They are the nicest people and most caring folks there. Planning to give them a donation since that is the way they survive and they should survive! Can't say enough good things about them. Keeping my fingers crossed for the little turtle as well. read more

Wildcare is one of those amazing places everyone needs to visit once. It's hidden away in a very lushly vegetated area and the place is entirely charming, from it's heart warming mission to woodlandsy/marshy feel. If you have kids and live in Marin, you should take them to Wildcare. They'll have a great time and take away some great lessons about sharing the world with the wild and furry, feathered, etc. read more

Now, I live in West Marin and grew up on a ranch. I have plenty of experience with wild life, but this was my first time at WildCare. And my daughters first time with an experience such as this. We recently brought in an orphaned rat (newly born) that I found in my flower bed. When I found this little guy it was late in the evening, and my daughter and I had just gotten back into town. I did a little research and found a suitable formula to feed him - every 3hrs - until we could make it into town the next day to seek further assistance. As well as taking health precautions with handling, and checking his urine and stool counts. Over the past couple of weeks we have had some major family losses. Our family dog of 18+yrs passed away, as well as our fish. These things happen, but that doesn't make it much easier. My eight year old daughter was enthusiastic about our find in the garden and was a wonderful helper. When we arrived at WildCare, it was immediate that I was not going to be talked "to", but rather "at". The volunteer I dealt with made it very apparent, without me having to say anything, that this was a wild animal. A rat. And looking at my daughter - who became distraught simply by the way this woman approached the conversation - stated, "If you want to be a good person, you'll do this." She didn't bother to give us further information on the wellbeing of the rodent, ask any questions about the kind of care we had been giving it. And where we had found it was the LAST question to me she had asked - or rather the ONLY question she asked. Everything about our experience there felt hostile. While I might possibly recommend WildCare to a person looking for treatment of an injured animal, I would not suggest it for any other reason! And I WILL NOT be seeking their care again! We were in search of information and assistance, NOT a savior! And were not given an option of anything but that! read more

I rescued a bird which had been hit by a car. I called them, and they gave me instructions on how to bring the bird to them. The place was very professional and the staff was very interested in saving this bird. Really a terrific place. read more

discovered a baby mockingbird hiding away amongst his siblings who did not make it. after looking up information on what to do, looking out for his parents, and knowing that there have been some bully crows on that street lately, my husband and i scooped him up, bought tons of stuff from our local pet food store, and, and,.. then what??!! i discovered that no shelters in san francisco accept birds! guessing this has something to do with all our beautiful rock doves that limp through the city. so we took care of him overnight, and first thing in the morning i brought him here. they took him in, and gave me a patient # so i could check up on his progress, and attend his graduation back into nature. something that was weird that the lady lied to me about his legs being tangled in the string of a tee shirt i used to make bedding for him. it was just weird. anyway, i recommend everyone visit, donate, volunteer, bring their kids, its beautiful, educational and inspiring. My good friend found a tiny bunny abandoned in her backyard and she brought it in and fed it with an eye dropper for a few days, then brought it to Wildcare. The staff there was rude and accused her of being a "kidnapper" She was very hurt and astonished to be kept at Wildcare for 4 hours before she could leave the bunnie. She is a diplomat's wife in her 40s, not an irresponsible person and Wildcare's treatment of her was appalling read more

After a horrible experience with Mark at Advanced Animal Removal (AAWC) I called Wildcare Solutions. Junio Costa came out and did amazing work. He spent hours under our home searching for the dead animal. They actually had to dig a trench under a part of the foundation in order to find the den but were successful. Junio then completely secured the access points under the home so we don't ever have this problem again. Thanks Junio, your the man! read more

I recently took in some very young (7 of them) opossums to them after finding them very cold and huddled in some leaves in a friends yard. Honestly, some dogs found them and that is why I removed them. After warming them and feeding them ( I have 40 yrs. as a veterinary assistant and have raised thousands of neonatal infants). I have only helped save three litters of opossums and have always taken them to the proper facility asap. I have never been so impressed! The care and friendliness of the staff was wonderful! Their first thoughts were of the babies and began their care immediately but their kindness to myself and my young grandson was greatly appreciated. Today I head over there again with a tiny naked baby bird that a client brought in last night. Unfortunately it is the only survivor out of a clutch of three. The others had open wounds. I did overnight care and now off to the professionals to do their good works. It will have the best chance of survival there. read more

The treatment we received after bringing one injured adult Dove, and a fledgling which had fallen from a nest and could not be reunited with its parents was horrible. We brought the fledgling to our local bird rescue center which refused it and sent it to wildcare, and coincidentally found the injured adult a few days later and brought that one directly to wildcare.We offered to return both birds to their flocks, in our neighborhood, when ready and were told that would happen. The first adult bird was kept for 9-10 days before they xrayed it and found crushed bones which meant it couldn't fly and decided to euthanize it. Whether that was the right decision we don't know. It was not made by a vet. We were not allowed to speak to a medical person. They have the capacity to keep a non flying bird. But they were rude to us and horrible. With the fledgling which we also offered to bring back to its parents and flock when ready, we were told that could happen, or they might raise it with other fledglings and release it. We called often and only found out 2 days after it was released that we would not be returning it to its flock , denied the opportunity to attend the release, given NO details as to if it was released with a group how many there were, and just told it was dropped at Marin Jr. College which seems like a horrible location near much traffic. We were again treated rudely by several people. I don't trust people who are so condescending and contemptuous of the public and so rude to treat animals compassionately. Our whole experience was appalling and we are contacting wildlife compliance to find out what options we will have the next time we find an injured Dove. We will never bring an animal to wildcare again. We won't bring a bird to our local rescue which was just as bad. read more

My experiences with WildCare have all been extraordinary as I have called them many times with sometimes difficult situations. I am so glad to know that we have these experts in the Bay Area as you never know what wild animal in distress you will encounter. Just this evening I observed an injured deer on three legs with the fourth one dangling and accompanied by two little baby deer in my backyard. I will call WildCare tomorrow morning and I know that they will provide their best guidance and options for how to help this little deer family. read more

I am happy that institutions like Wildcare exist to help animals, which is why I regularly make donations to their organization. I was quite upset after calling into their organization last week after seeing a sick turkey wandering the roads in Petaluma while I was driving. The poor bird looked very confused and almost ran into road with on coming traffic. As I was driving by myself, I quickly called them to see if they could help since it seems they help animals from all over the bay area. I can't and really shouldn't be making calls while driving, and when I reached Wildcare by phone explaining the situation, the girl on the line acted as if she couldn't be bothered with such things in Petaluma and told me to call elsewhere. I told her I was driving and wouldn't be stationary to look up phone numbers for quite some time and that the bird was going to get hit by a car. She didn't care. I ended up making a call to Petaluma animal control 45 min later when I got home. Seriously, if Wildcare hires people like this who are less than helpful and can't make a call, why am I donating money to them? read more

Such a great educational and rehabilitation facility! I enjoy visiting the courtyard and interacting with the ambassador birds. The kestrel and acorn woodpeckers seem to definitely enjoy visitors. The educational facilities - for kids and adults - are quite good. I enjoy the Walks with Wildcare events when the naturalists teach the public about the critters we see. These walks opened up the Las Gallinas ponds to me in a new, exciting way. read more

Called and asked for help after what I thought might have been a rattle snake incident in my yard. They basically scolded me for killing the snake and didn't want to asses the surroundings at all. I explained that I have children and animals that use the yard all the time. To bad their knowledge was overshadowed by their judgement of how we handled the situation. read more

I really can say nothing at all bad about this fabulous organization. I've volunteered with Wildcare for years, taken many the sick/injured wildlife to their hospital, and have so much respect for everything that they do. They not only help injured wildlife, but they help to inform the public about wildlife/nature, have classes available, can always sincerely use volunteers (not like those places where you just stand around wondering what on earth you should be doing!), have little day camps for children, and everyone there is so caring and passionate about what they're doing - employees and volunteers alike. Call the wildlife hotline for advice on anything from an injured deer to the evacuation of a family of opposums under your home to eco-friendly pesticides.... if the person on the phone does not know off the top of their head, they'll be sure to find out for you. Stop by just to get general information, guides, tips. On a nice afternoon visit the "ambassador animals" (the animals that are permanents at wildcare) and the small but informative and interesting wildlife museum. Bring any injured animals that you find to the front desk of wildcare asap. Even if the animal has no chance of living, wildcare will humanely euthanize to prevent further suffering. As a volunteer, though, I can safely assure you that all animals are given a chance, and it's incredibly rewarding and amazing to watch animals heal and grow to be released back into their natural habitats. I've had a squirrel fiasco. First Rat Magic didn't show up for three appointments then Critter control overcharged me for a rushed $325 under 15 min service and inspection that didn't help at all then Wild Care to the rescue! Not only are they professional, on time and effective, they also care about the animals. They put a one way door on a what had become a front door at the facade of my roof in SF and my squirrel tenant one day exited the door and no more squirrel sounds or worries about baby squirrels being born in the attic after that. They're still coming back to seal off the entry permanently, but the whole bid for inspection, one way door and sealing is less than Critter Controls under 15 minute failed inspection and deterrent! I remember my mom gave money to wild care when I was a kid. So great that they are still helping the wild ones of our neighborhoods and running a tip top business. Thank you wild care. read more
