As a vegetarian, whenever anybody suggests a meal in a steak joint a rush of panic floods over me…read more What will I eat? What if I'm left with a salad!? (I may be a veggie but it doesn't mean I love lettuce leaves!) So when my friends planned Sunday lunch in The Cowshed I sighed a heavy sigh. But I had nothing to fear - with two vegetarian options on the lunch time menu, at least I had something to choose from (Albeit a standard veggie burger or a goats cheese tart - two 'classics') and since this was a restaurant for meat eaters I could hardly complain! My burger was delicious, served with tasty chunky chips and washed down with hearty cider. My friend's roast dinners looked fabulous too. The service was very welcoming and the atmosphere was just what you want on a Sunday - full of fun and laughter.

While The Cowshed's poster mammal isn't smiling it still tickles me so I agreed to dinner here with my steak loving other half. The focus here is all about good old-fashioned British dishes, particularly steak and it's many guises. My partner ordered a steak cooked on a hot stone tablet right in front of him - similar to the way you can get hot plates in Indian restaurants, except this actually allowed him to partially cook the steak himself. As an occasional vegetarian there wasn't a great amount of choice for me to pick a main course but the starters and desserts were divine! It is quite pricey but I would come back for the chocolate mouse alone and my partner can whole-heartedly vote for the sirloin steak!

It's a relief, then, to find the Penny Farthing which resolutely is not one of these bars. It's not massively attractive from the outside, the sign in particular looking tired. Things get a bit better on entry. The long bar sweeps through the room elegantly, bringing up the character of the place. Although it could easily be dark and dingy, given the shape the room, they've lit it up well and succeeded in making it feel cosy. A good place to sit out a cold evening. They've made an effort with the selection of beers on offer. Prices hover around three pounds for a pint, which is a bit steep but fair considering what they're offering and the surroundings. Probably in virtue of not being like the rest of the drinking establishments along the road, this place doesn't get too many students (make what you want of that comment - personally I like a place with a studenty feel, but others disagree strongly). The Penny Farthing is a likeable pub and a welcome contrast to its neighbours.

But don't expect any natural light inside. This is a traditional pub, with local regulars and lovely bar staff. They do a Sunday roast, but I really would advise against it, there are much better options nearby. But defiantly come here with a group of mates, sit around one of the high old oak tables, grab a pint (well one for each of you) and soak up the atmosphere. The Farthing is the only pub left in a sea of Tea Rooms and Falafel shops (or hippy nonsense as my unenlightened friends would say). Literally it's hilarious; it looks so out of place sat there by the road amongst the plethora of glass fronted, double glazed, chain restaurants and hair dressers. Let's just hope it stays there!

Upon arrival we were greeted by the bar staff and a waiter took us to our table. The view was really nice as it overlooked the busy street of Bristol. We ordered 2 half pints of Asahi dry beer as they were out of Kirin; the waiter was the only one on the floor and it seemed understaffed but he was very nice and didn't seem too stressed. I ordered the Salmon Bento Box with the chicken Gyoza and tuna Sashimi and my mum ordered the traditional Ramen. The food was quick to come out and it was elegantly placed, the miso soup was part of my Bento Box and was traditional and tasted exceptional. it's important for the rice to be perfect as much as the protein and every element was prepared with care and tasted really good; the salmon hand roll however included the salmon being a bit squished which diminished it's structural integrity but with it being freshly prepared, it was a factor I could overlook. My mum's ramen was spiced well so that it was not overpowering and they even included chilli paste on the side in case she wanted it hotter but there was no need. Ultimately, this place was a lovely surprise and I would definitely return!

Simply the Best; Better than All the Other Indian Restaurants in Bristol!!!…read moreWe have tried most of the Indian Restaurants in this part of North Bristol as well as those within the City Centre. After many years of dining out, we always return to the Jubo Raj. For one simple reason -- We are very particular about our curries and regard this Restaurant as the best in the City!!! I do not recognise the negative description of the Jubo Raj in some other reviews on here. (Perhaps, in this life, we get back what we give out in terms of friendliness??!!!) For many years we have enjoyed the warm and friendly atmosphere and the truly excellent food (what a superb, wide ranging menu!!!) Whether we go in as a couple or a group of six or more, we always have a truly terrific time. In these financially difficult times, the prices are genuine value for money. Best of all, it's a BYO (Bring your Own Wine & Beer). Obviously, that will save a massive amount of money for a party of people.... often halving the total cost of a meal out. Alternatively, the Restaurant has a decent range of beers and wines!!! We brought our own bottles of wine and beer and, without hesitation, the friendly waiter agreed to pop our drinks in their fridge to keep them chilled. Whilst it seems a little unfair to single out particular staff members, since all were friendly and courteous, both Kazi and Manik were particularly excellent!!! On those occasions when we could not manage the portions on our plates, the waiter was delighted to provide us with a container to take home the remainder to enjoy later!!! Just perfect!!! So go on, treat yourself to a superb meal at a fantastic price - in very friendly surroundings!!! As the song says, this place is Simply the BEST, better than ALL the rest!!! Mr. Val

Wood floors, smart wooden furniture, sharp service. Somebody has made the effort with this place, and it has paid off. You don't feel like you're being ripped off with the pricey food and drink, just that you're paying a premium for getting to sit around in a good café. This is all done without making it feel posh or exclusive. If money is tight there's wifi available, so you can just hide behind a coffee for an hour or so and distract yourself from the menu by checking your email. The menu's comprehensive and has been different every time I have visited though, so this might be a bit of a challenge. This is one of the ways that you might end up spending more here than you'd planned. If this isn't too much of a worry for you, then pay Deco Lounge a visit.

It's the kind of adaptable place that's just as much at home to an elderly gent having a mid afternoon pint (no longer having a puff on a cigarette though) as it is to a bunch of students/young professionals coming for a few cocktails and catch ups - which by the way, are well worth trying at less than £6 a go. The food is fairly priced too, with a good selection of tapas. The best thing is the breakfasts: if you go before 12pm it's £5.50 for a coffee and lounge breakfast which will really set you up well for the day. If you miss that though, not to worry, they serve breakfast it all day, definitely earning it a few more plus points. Should you want a quiet little hide out, away from the hustle and bustle of nearby Whiteladies road, the table at the top end to the right of the bar is nicely tucked away, it's always my seat of choice. The free Wifi, excellently stocked bar, and good food makes it dangerously easy to waste away far too many hours in here.
