This house was probably the most extensive tour of the 3 - it starts with a 10 minute video introducing you to what happened that morning in April 1775. You're then brought into the well-kept house by a guide who introduces you to this beautiful home built by Thomas Clark, a wealthy book maker, for his parents who were in ministry. You can hear how much thought, money, and planning was put into the house through the guide's stories. This house is known for housing John Hancock and Samuel Adams on the big night - they were on the run with rewards on their heads. They escaped right in the nick of time when Paul Revere came to warn them to get out. It's absolutely fantastic to be able to see the original architecture and imagine the history that went on there. Guides are very informative and very enthusiastic about the house and everything in it. I'd recommend doing the package deal - the tickets never expire so even if you don't get to all 3 and want to come back another time or give the tickets to someone else to use, you can do that!

Moreover, it's not just a testament to the forethought of archiving & record keeping, it is a current and thought provoking social and political analysis & commentary from our modern perspective that allows the viewer to gain insight without being bludgeoned over the head with moralistic critique. Worth your careful attention. Also, the bathrooms are in the basement and although a gender free option was not immediately obvious, the attention to details in the woman's room is also an excellent commentary on science and the passage of generations.

Tucked in the corner of the Harvard Science Center, on the first floor just past the Oxford Street…read moreentrance, you'll find this gem of a museum. If you're interested in history, in old clocks, in scientific innovation, in telescopes, in early computers, or even just the lesser known Harvard histories, this is the place for you. It is free to enter, and the staff inside are always really friendly. If you call in advance, they'll even arrange a free guided tour with one of the curators. My favourite items are the old grandfather clocks, who sit ominously along one wall of the gallery, stoically tick-tocking in time with each other, and accompanied by a fantastic story about how time was originally kept before the advent of telephones and immediate forms of communication (e.g. "What time is it over there?" "Oh, I'll have to sail my ship across the ocean with a miniature clock and see what they say.") I also love the fact that most of these objects are never seen aside from in old history books, but that the CHSI has them out and proud, without glass around some of them, for you to see. SUCH a great opportunity to get kids excited about science AND history! Beware the old computer set-up at the back of the gallery -- it has a VERY sensitive alarm, which goes off (to the amusement of the gallery staff, I think) every time some over-excited visitor leans over the keyboard. They really don't want you to start typing and touching it! One star removed, on account of how cold it is inside (bring a sweater... brrr!) and their limited opening hours. Aside from these things, it's an EXCELLENT museum.

Many of the experiences Louisa…read morelater wrote about in Little Women happened at Wayside.The Alcott family aided at least 1 escaped slave to hide out here for a few weeks as part of the Underground Railroad. Nathaniel Hawthorne bought it in 1852, renamed it Wayside, and added the highest structure. He was now neighbors with the Alcott's who moved into the Orchard house just a 2-3 minute walk away. Emerson and Thoreau were frequent visitors and lived close by (it was said Louisa could see Walden Pond from her bedroom window at Orchard House). Just so many incredible connections of historical significance in Concord! This is designated as a National Historical landmark. It was not opened for tours when we visited in November. The website it says it's closed on all holidays as well as Aug 29-June 1, so plan ahead if you would like to go inside. Free designated parking area right across the street.

The Wayside is a historic house in Concord, Massachusetts. The earliest part of the home may date to 1717. Later it successively became the home of the young Louisa May Alcott and her family, who named it Hillside, author Nathaniel Hawthorne and his family, and children's writer Margaret Sidney. It became the first site with literary associations acquired by the National Park Service and is now open to the public as part of Minute Man National Historical Park. Louisa May Alcott is best known for her book Little Women and then the follow up Little Men. Nathaniel Hawthorne's best known works are The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables. Margaret Sidney was a children's book writer but is also known as the founder of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The Alcott family used the home as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Once you get past the crowds, you're free to retreat in the quiet, intimate, two floor displays. The guards are very sweet and knowledgeable and will often talk to you about what they know. You can probably leisurely soak in the entire exhibit in a hour or two, which makes for a lovely weekend afternoon outing (or fantastic break from outrageous thesis researching). There have never been more than a handful of people in there when I've visited during the week, and I doubt the weekends are any busier. Last semester there was a Jackson Pollock/Herbert Matter exhibit, and currently the exhibit is Jewish mosaics from the Roman Empire.

Mike is a painter and sculptor who created lots of inventive objects from old piano parts and then produced an historic book documenting the objects and their usage. The pages of the coffee table book are posted near the relics, creating the atmosphere of an historic exhibit. It's so fun to see the objects and paintings Frassinelli created and look for the clever puns in the write up. This is my third time seeing this exhibit and it never gets old. Bring the whole family!

This is an iconic sports cathedral. Original Six NHL teams competed in this building when it was the home of the Bruins (1924-28), the Boston Celtics played here in their early days (1946-55), and a veritable who's who of eastern college hockey teams have called the old barn home. The old style entry doors and working heat registers on the walls attest to the age of this hockey haven. This venerable 113-year old building (it opened April 10, 1910) screams hockey history and is not to be missed by any true sports fan.
