The asian lady who works at the front desk was amazing. She was very nice and super helpful when I asked her questions about the gallery. Only downside is we had some trouble with the security guys following us around and hovering. We were the only ethnic couple at the gallery at the time and they only followed us and told us not to get too close to the art work. They were very rude and had no trouble glaring at my partner and I and clearly following us around when we had done nothing to garner concern.

The city of Halifax grossly mistreated people because of their skin colour and this is a place to make sure we never forget that mistake an hopefully learn from it. The building is an exact replica of the former church that stood in the area before the cities bulldozers came in to destroy everything. It has been beautifully recreated to the same size and within it are three rows of informative displays about life in Africville and the terrible things that were done to them. At the end of the tour I am and will always feel quite ashamed for what happened to these people simply because of the color of their skin. I'm glad places like this do exist so that we may learn from our mistakes and never repeat them. We've come a long way from these dark days but there is always more we can do to stop racism.

Africville is not accessible by public transportation and there are NO sidewalks. We had to walk along the highway to get to the park and there is minimal signage to indicate you're going the right way. The museum and park are surrounded by industrial storage and roadwork and is off-putting to walk through if you aren't sure about where you are going. Honestly, it's embarrassing to the city and the province, how inaccessible this area is. You would think having sidewalks would be the bare minimum, but apparently not.

It's Canada's oldest and largest maritime museum located on the beautiful waterfront of Halifax! They have many exhibits and artifacts including the largest collection of items and stories about the Titanic rescue, shipbuilding, the 1917 Halifax explosion and various Navy memorabilia. I really enjoyed that they included history of the indigenous mi'kmaw! Also notable was that they have a boat school and a real more representative that will signal your name and provide you a certificate! Fun day of seeing, learning and having fun at this museum!

There's so much to learn, and the exhibits are incredibly well done. We especially loved the Titanic section--super moving and full of fascinating detail. It's definitely worth the price of admission, especially if you're even remotely interested in history or maritime culture. We left feeling like we'd learned a lot and gained a deeper appreciation for Halifax's role in so many historic events. Highly recommend!

Everything and anything cool as dirt and art related. The space is amazing. Climbing the stairs you feel like you could be in any city, about to embark on a secret night. You'll see smiles, wild dance moves, great style and a lot of happy people on any given night at the Khyber. It's my favorite space in this city. If you're into a scene that's a little off the grid, check it out - if nothing else, you'll admire the historic nature of the building and the amount of life that one old place can house.

Be sure to bring cash for beer. The fridge usually is stacked with local Propeller beer, my favourite beer in the city. A lot of people work hard to keep the place going and it is vital for the Halifax arts scene. Definitely a place worth visiting and spending some money to help out.

They also had home-made molasses cookies There is a woodshop, in which the carpenter was making wood slats to form barrels, which are available for purchase in the gift shop. The blacksmith was making hooks and horseshoes to sell in the gift shop. There is a school house, in which you can sit at a desk and learn about the history of the farm, ask questions, etc. We were able to see the sheep receive medicine, go for a covered wagon ride and take some amazing pictures. This is a must see if you are in the area!

Located just off Cole Harbour Road (only a couple of blocks from where it turns into Portland Street), this museum has something for everyone. We've visited a few times. Admission is free, with donations encouraged. In the summers, they have livestock on premises: we've seen cows, chickens, lambs, pigs, ducks and - of course - barn cats. There are several historic buildings on site. Most have been moved from their original location in order to construct a composite of a typical turn-of-the-century rural Nova Scotia farm. Many of the buildings have displays of old farm equipment, along with explanations of how farming was accomplished before the industrial revolution came along and changed the game forever. Check out their gift shop and café. Their menu is surprisingly good and many of the ingredients are as local-sourced as it gets: vegetables from the farm garden and eggs from the farm barn. They also do on-site catering for special events. Fair warning: on a hot day, the temperature inside the café is a good 5-10 degrees warmer than outside.

I went as a part of a day tour. Definitely make this a stop/day trip if you are in Nova Scotia. PS - I went in early November just after the end of high season. It was so lovely and quiet, no crowds.
