The rest of the building has been renovated and turned into an event space, so you don't get to see the entire building. Once inside, it was pitch black. No windows or natural light. The only source of light came from the tour guide's flashlight, and I wasn't even sure if we were allowed to take photos with flash. Because of this, some of the pictures I took turned out completely dark, which was really disappointing considering the price of the ticket. I've been to other haunted locations that offered a much more immersive and worthwhile experience. Unfortunately, this one just didn't live up to expectations.

The front reads, "Haddrell's Point extended along the waterfront from Shem Creek to Cove Inlet and was named for George Haddrell, an early settler. The land bordering Shem Creek became home to important industries including factories, canneries, and rice and saw mills. The mills drew their power from the tides of Shem Creek." And the reverse, "In early 1776, a battery was erected at Haddrell's Point and placed under the command of Brigadier General John Armstrong. The strategic location of the battery was vital in safeguarding Charleston from British attacks. With ceremonial fanfare, President George Washington embarked from Haddrell's Point to Charleston, during his Southern tour in 1791." But in 1775, before that battery mentioned on the marker was completed, Colonel William Moultrie was ordered to construct a fascine battery at Haddrell's Point. Fascines--bundles of sticks used to reinforce earthworks--were employed to quickly build a 58-foot-long fortification armed with four 18-pound cannons. This battery was completed overnight by 200 men under Major Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, who worked under cover of darkness to avoid British fire. The battery's success was immediate. It helped drive off the HMS Tamar and HMS Cherokee, which had been anchored in Charleston Harbor. And during the Civil War, the site of the original fascine battery was repurposed for the Mount Pleasant Mortar Battery and Battery Gary, continuing its legacy as a defensive stronghold. The marker was erected in 2007. There is no sponsor listed on it. There is street parking nearby if you're inclined to visit the site of the original battery. If you're a runner training for the Bridge Run, this is a great run to do, as it's usually several weeks before that race. If you're a recreational runner or walker, this is still a great event because you get to eat and drink all you want after you run. If you don't run, you can still buy a ticket to the oyster roast. With jump castles and a hayride, it was a great event for kids, too. East Cooper Land Trust did a wonderful job with the event, and Oakland Plantation was very impressive. I'm not sure how many events are held here, but it's perfect for an oyster roast. There's a large open field for chairs and picnic blankets, lots of areas to park, and a beautiful pond. Although you are only about a mile from Hwy 17 N, Oakland Plantation fees like a completely different world. Do slow down on Porcher's Bluff Rd. or you will miss it. I'm not sure how many events ECLT hosts here, but I'd come back. I plan to help with next year's Race and Roast. The crew was super thankful for us volunteers as well as everyone who attended.

I wasn't really sure of what I was looking at here but it is a short and narrow alleyway. Longitude Lane also serves as entrance ways to some huge beautiful private residences. As I strolled through the road I noted that some of the foliage on the doorways and garages looked lovely and gave the place some personality. Be careful walking on the cobblestone road, though, you could misstep and twist your ankle. Best walk on the sides of the road. It's very narrow so watch out for cars too from the residents. I suppose there is some story on how Longitude Lane got its name. Maybe the narrow road had something to do with its measurement which is approximately 540 feet long and just over ten feet wide. Anyway, I've seen people walk by and take pictures here so I said... why not. I was able to check-in Yelp too! LoL Review #1849

The marker is in very good condition and easy to read. On the front, "Hampton Park was once home to the Washington Race Course and Jockey Club. In 1864 this site became an outdoor prison for Union soldiers. Before Charleston fell in Feb. 1865, more than 250 prisoners died and were buried in mass graves. After Confederate evacuation, black ministers and northern missionaries led an effort to reinter bodies and build a fence around a newly established cemetery. Over the entrance workmen inscribed the words "Martyrs of the Racecourse."" And on the reverse, "On May 1, 1865 a parade to honor the Union war dead took place here. The event marked the earliest celebration of what became known as "Memorial Day." The crowd numbered in the thousands, with African American school children from newly formed Freedmen's Schools leading the parade. They were followed by church leaders, Freedpeople, Unionists, and members of the 54th Mass., 34th, and 104th U.S. Colored Infantries. The dead were later reinterred in Beaufort." It is marker number 10-99 and was erected in 2017 by the City of Charleston. [Review 19458 overall - 1032 in South Carolina - 428 of 2023.]

Despite being documented as the second most important Civil War site in South Carolina, the preserve is in need of a little bit of TLC. The preserve is on the site of the Battle of Secessionville in which a Confederate force of 1,250 defeated 3,500 Union troops on June 16, 1862. This is one of the few land battle sites fought in the state during the Civil War. Few physical remnants of the battle or fort remain today, but visitors can visit self-guided hiking trails to discover the history of the area. The preserve covers both sides of the road. You'll want to park in the area where you see monuments and memorials to the site as well as an informational double-sided billboard. You'll need to cross the street to begin the main hiking trail (unpaved). My main issue is that DNR (the agency responsible for upkeep of the site) doesn't appear to be visiting the site frequently as the brochure bin that you pick up the map to guide you on the trail seemed to have been empty for quite some time. This is an issue as there are no signs along the trail to tell you what you're looking at or provide historical context. Simply small number plaques that I assume would align with information in the brochure/map that was unavailable in the parking area. As it was - my friends and I ended up not completing the whole hike through the site as we had no idea how long the trail went and without the context for what we were looking at - it was more or less just a nice stroll in the woods along the marsh. If I could get my hands on one of the maps to actually self-guide myself through the trail I would definitely come back to this important historical site.
