Beautiful library that used to be a residential home. Nice interior with mahogany staircase, a children's section, a small computer area, and some tables and chairs throughout. Not a big selection of books to choose from but it is still a nice library to enjoy some reading. Wish they had chairs on the porch to relax, read, and watch the streetcar go by.

There is a children's department with an area called the Lakeshore Cove. It has a replica of a six-foot alligator that kids can sit in and play learning games on the built-in video screen. The Lakeshore Cove also has a Smart Table. It is an interactive learning-style console that is really cool. Gone are the days of the Dewey Decimal system that most of us grew up with at our libraries. This library (like many others nationwide) switched over to the BISAC cataloging system which is what you see at your bookstores. No more numbers just categories. The interior has lots of comfy chairs and areas that encourage you to stay there longer than planned. I attend a conversational Spanish circle on Wednesdays from 6-7. It's very informal and very helpful for me since I want to practice my Spanish on a regular basis. They also offer a conversational French session on Tuesday nights. The librarian was eager to help me, and she showed me how to navigate their website to use online resources for FREE! I love supporting my local libraries because they are such a great resource to the community and cater to a variety of interests. Notes: They have nice lounge chairs sit and work in or to read in. I shifted my backpack and the older gentleman at the front desk told me not to get to comfortable since they are closing in 1 minute. Odd. Then he took the long way to explain what I already know and took up most of that minute not answering my question. FYI it is unclear on the website but- even if you walk into the library, as a non-resident, it is still $50 to get a library card.

I went to the bath bomb and sugar scrub class and it was awesome. While there weren't a lot of us there, the few people there made it feel very welcoming and comfortable. Every second Monday of the month, at the Westbank branch, you can get free notary services but it is on a first come first serve basis and she's only there for an hour 9am-10am. The notary public is very nice and she says this is her way of giving back to the community. Kudos to her!! I prefer the Napoleon branch because it's much bigger and more spacious with many more study rooms and places to sit. However, both branches have friendly staff. Meeting rooms are available for free with ample notice. So, check them out for monthly activities because lately they've been hosting a plethora of them. They also have card games but Spades isn't one lol.

As far as space usability, this place is on par with other universities. The book stacks are less. The technology is more present and the space is more welcoming of an evolving culture. There are spaces for gathering. Plenty of study rooms. The first floor is for conversations, traffic, groups and snacks at the coffee bar. It's a home away from home for graduate students. So yeah, we like it pretty well.

Their catalog is straightforward enough, but the book rows are all over the place and sometimes difficult to follow. Not to mention the fact that the majority of the stacks are in low-ceiling, basement like spaces, giving one the sense that they are in the opening ghost scene from "Ghostbusters." Also, for a library building, Howard Tilton is rather noisy. Of course, people will chitchat as they do, but the HVAC units are constantly roaring and the staircases echo like anything. If you get a couch seat on the third floor while the sun is still up, then I'll admit, it makes for a lovely reading space. Also... thank the good lord they put a PJ's coffee inside!
