We stopped in here this morning for breakfast, and had a wonderful experience. Our server was great - she asked if we preferred a table or booth, and we opted for a booth. There's a surprising amount of seating in this restaurant, with plenty of booths, and tables. The service was also very quick - we had our food less than ten minutes after ordering. I went with the country omelette (sans onions), which is generously sized with three eggs, and was chock full of green onions, ham, tomato, mushroom, and cheese on top (fun/different way to do it). Choice of toast, I went with rye, which came out perfectly toasted with plenty of butter on it, and hash browns. Delicious! My husband ordered the special (choice of meat, choice of how your eggs are cooked, toast, and hash browns). Our server was awesome - checked on us multiple times, and was very friendly. Stopped in for a quick lunch when downtown Pella was super crowded, and we got seated almost immediately despite the crowded restaurant! Our server was really quick and attentive. You'll pay at the cash register up front. I was really tempted by the breakfast, but we ended up ordering off the small Greek menu section because it's gotta be good if it's from a diner, right? It was! I tore into it before I could get a great pic. The fries are my favorite style too, with the extra crispy outside. We split an order of cheese curds as well - YUM. While I was tempted by the Sunday breakfast buffet, we ended up getting a quicker breakfast but if I'm ever in town again, I would definitely return! read more

Man is this place is a beautiful blast to the past. The food is absolutely, incredibly, simple but delicious. It was the perfect breakfast following a rough morning. My wife had a beautiful breakfast with French Toast, eggs over medium, bacon extra crispy. I had my usual. 3 eggs scrambled, and two sausage patties. The service hear shines here though. The waiters and waitresses here still HANDWRITE their tickets. Our server Dee has been there 16 years!!! We talked about coffee shops, like this one, in our past and present. This is a great one. Food is very average. Servers are also just above average, although it seems that the kitchen staff is somewhat surely. Prices are good, and the outside of the building is SO cute. Don't come here if you are looking for nice food. This is just a greasy diner with bland food. I had the Pella Burger which was one of the worst burgers I have ever had. Thin patty with a slither of bologna and tasteless fries. Truly tasteless. My wife had scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage links, and two pancakes. This meal was ok. However, the waitress forgot the sausage patties and when we told her about it she brought us sausage links. At that point we were too indifferent to complain as we just wanted to get out. The place smells of grease. Not a good place to go. We only went because we were hungry and the lady of the tourist stand said that it was a good place for lunch. How wrong she was. Avoid this place. I was visiting a good friend who moved here just before COVID. Decided to take her to breakfast on a Sunday morning. Looked to see what was open early in Pella and found the Windmill Cafe. Checked the menu and it all looked good but when we got there we were pleasantly surprised with a Sunday morning brunch Buffett for $10.50. Now they had breakfast and lunch selections. So much food I will have to come back another time. But this time I tried the scrambled eggs with ham, cheese and veggies, biscuits and gravy, potatoes, and hash browns. It was all so good and I am not a biscuit and gravy girl but this was fresh and home made. Definitely not from a can. Decaf coffee was good too. Do yourself a favor and eat here. read more

Stopped in late breakfast to do some Christmas shopping in Pella. Server was so nice checked on us frequently and made sure everything was ok so service was good. The food didn't leave as good on an impression. I ordered the Bacon and cheese omelette, it was ok. The melted Kraft cheese slices on top were not what I expected and didn't add anything but more oil to the dish. Which the hash browns were swimming in. The hashbrowns were super greasy! They were slightly crispy on top and soggy with grease on the bottom. The toast was pretty soggy with the butter/oil stuff they use. Overall I was disappointed. well lets start this off right... those who know me I am a porkatarian from my mom's side of the family!! so I know pork well!! and here in Iowa we have what we call a pork tenderloin... not to be confused with a German Pork Schnitzel... but a close relative for sure!! and there is a product called a pork fritter.... yea not the same!! a fritter is ground pressed pork..... and the flavor is different for sure!! I ordered a pork tenderloin (see the menu) and got a fritter... cooked well... but wait I asked for everything!! what no onions?? like 2.75 more for fries... (basic small fry) some one else had mentioned the fries were tasteless!! kinda weird they were just that!! no taste!! so I salted the heck out of them.. and plenty of ketchup... at least the food was hot!! right out of the fryer!! most folks that know me I will eat almost anything... so the T-loin here is a pass for me... culvers has a better T-loin!! now on to the good part!! YES they still do the Sunday only brunch buffet!! hours on that is 8am to 2pm!! that I know is good!! I would like to eat in a establishment that has no distractions and can enjoy good food and conversation. My grandparents liked their food, but unfortunately I can't say I left satisfied. I checked with the waitress multiple times if the flatbread had eggs or dairy, and when I got it, it tasted buttery so I didn't eat more of it. Then the tomato salad I got I ordered without dressing or olive oil because I don't like those on salad. She told me it would probably just be on the side. I stated several times just to be sure- no cheese, no meat, no dressing/oil. Lo and behold, my salad arrives DRENCHED in oil and the dressing. I literally wiped my pieces of tomato off with a napkin until it was soaked and gave up. Also, I ordered a plain baked potato on the side, and it came with butter, so they had to bring me a new one. It was pretty frustrating. The waitress was nice and I liked the vibe in here, but I ended up just getting a loaf of rye bread next door for a more fulfilling lunch. read more

My family and I were having an excursion in Pella and we wanted lunch. I was particularly interested in french toast and ordered a short order for ~$3. One of the other family members ordered today's special, which was a beef-noodle dish. The food was reasonably priced and came out quickly, but before long I discovered I had gotten exactly what i had paid for; $3 for an order of french toast. The toast was what our waitress called "texas toast" with a pat of butter sandwiched in between. The order wasn't all too warm and was almost salty rather than plain or sweet. In other words, it was average. The beef special was determinedly too salty. However, the price wasn't anything to complain about. I'd describe the Windmill Cafe as a "better, inexpensive Village inn." Maybe I should've ordered a waffle instead? read more

I had the daily soup special: a crock of Creamy Broccoli Soup with a Chicken Salad Croissant for $5.95 and capped my meal off with a slice of Strawberry Rhubarb Pie. The croissant was fresh and fluffy, though the chicken salad was lacking. It wasn't bad, but I've had better. It was very finely chopped, so it was lacking the crunchiness you get from chicken salad with bigger pieces of celery or the crispness of grapes. The soup was incredibly tasty and creamy. I'm used to broccoli cheese soups being made with yellow cheeses. This one was made with a white cheese, which was a tasty change. The special, I would say, was most definitely Creamy Broccoli Soup WITH a Chicken Salad Croissant and not Creamy Broccoli Soup AND A Chicken Salad Croissant. The soup was the real feature of this special. After being on the fence about dessert, I'm glad I spoke up and got a slice of Strawberry Rhubarb pie. I had the option of getting it with ice cream, which I turned down, and the option of having it heated, which I accepted. This pie was wonderful! It was the perfect balance of tangy, tart, and sweet. Definitely worth the additional $3.75. Service was a little slow as the place was full for the lunch rush, but my mom and I had a nice lunch in the window booth of the shop. I would definitely recommend this place for a tasty breakfast (served all day!) or lunch! read more

Food is good. Bad management today. Our hostess seated us, we ordered and just got our food. Then told they have a reservation for that table and they show up 15 minutes early. So we were told to hurry and eat. All the while the reservation people stood right by us watching us eat and making rude comments how we were at their table and to finish up. I came to Windmill Cafe for breakfast, and I loved it. The food came out very quickly and it didn't taste rushed at all. The prices were very good (around $6-$8) and the atmosphere of the little cafe was nice. I'm not a breakfast guy, but I liked this one. The butter on the toast was probably the best part I would give this a 9/10 but I'll give it a 5/5. Very nice place. Very good food. read more
