Amongst the fast food mayhem which inhabits Smithdown road it was really refreshing to see a store which was comitted to providing people with fresh and healthy organic food products. As a student you can begin to feel bogged down by the constant fast food fare and beans on toast so to be able to visit somewhere which gave a good healthy option and was so close to my halls was brilliant. The shop itself is green outside which is apt and it really feels light and refreshing when you enter. The staff are fantastic they really are committed to providing good quality food and good quality service to the customers. On one of my excursions here I has numerous questions about the varied produce all of which were answered swiftly, informatively and most of all friendly and this made me feel a real affinity with the place. They give you so many options in here and the website even suggests healthy recipes you can make yourself such as deserts which are suitable for vegans. This really impressed me as it shows the amount of care these people put into what they do. The prices are good and the food is always ridiculously fresh as every day there are deliveries of spanking new produce.. There are organic shops and then there are ORGANIC shops. I didn't stop long enough to chat with the staff as they were very busy stocking the shelves and unpacking deliveries but having looked at the extensive selection of items and range of organic goods I could tell they were very passionate and dedicated people - I have never seen anywhere that has organic tampons! Yes a selection of organic tampons, I mean I could have misread but I didnt really want to pick up the packet and really take in what I had just seen. It certainly wouldn't surprise me as they have gone to great lengths to stock only the most envrionmentally sound products here in a range of foods and household products - frozen organic meals? Ah even the morally sound are lazy and lonely. And I have never seen such a range of pastas in so many shades of brown and green. The Windmill is an old institution in Liverpool. It is one of the few places that stocks an essential range of wholefoods, all vegetarian/ vegan and often organic. Some Fair Trade items are available. The Windmill has a tendency to fluctuate in it's available stock. On a visit 6 months ago the place was stocked to the brim with products, whereas in the last weeks it has looked a little bedraggled and in need of it's customers to remember to come, purchase and insist on more stock. If you want to have the best chances of getting your groceries of choice then shop on wednesday afternoons or any time thursdays. Deliveries come on wednesdays... By monday the selection of fresh produce will be limited. parking: Now that the Windmill has moved to Aigburth Road parking is really easy. Leave your car on or off Lark Lane or drive into the next side street to the shop. It shouldn't bee difficult to find a quick stop parking spot. And parking is free in the area. Your other key option for wholesome foods is Mattas on Bold Street, they have more Asian food products but do stock some organic and 'free-from' products that you might not find in the Windmill. I combine my weekly shopping, with all fresh produce sourced in the Windmill and some additional items and spices purchased in Mattas, who are super friendly and helpful. PLUS point: if it is not on the shelf then you can order it (both Windmill as well as Mattas, but the Windmill will be even more responsive I think) and it will be there a week later. Windmill Wholefoods is situated on the busy Smithdown Road area, which is one of the big student areas in Liverpool. It is an excellent little shop, much better than the branded shops where the staff only have limited knowledge. Windmill is a small shop but it is crammed to the rafters with a huge selection of products. This can be daunting but the staff are happy to help, advise and explain the products to you. Windmill is an ethical workers cooperative business selling organic fruit and veg, vegan food, vegetarian food, specialist dietary products, natural body care and environmentally friendly household goods. The items are well organised and are inexpensive. This is a great little shop. Even if you don't think that its your sort of shop then just pop in and have a browse. The Windmill is great, they have such a wide selection of healthy foods and the at forefront of the shops ethos seems to be Organic. The staff are super helpful and really happy to give you advice on their stock. They have a fantastic range of fresh fruit and veg which is constantly re-stocked with frequent deliveries. Their tea collection is beautiful. (Hello, I'm Helen and I'm addicted to Yogi tea.) It's so much cheaper than the likes of Holland and Barrett for the same brand too! So we can add Ethical to the list of keywords which describe this store which has the well-being of everyone at heart. You can pick up about 10 types of muesli, dried fruits, granola and nuts and lentils and peas and more pasta than you can shake a stick at. Basically anything with any vitamin that will make you feel 100% more alive and well is here, crammed into this quaint little store which should live long and prosper just like it's healthy customers. read more

They also sell organic and fair-trade tea and coffee and baking products. They promote hemp products and they stock quite a range of hemp based oils and beauty products. High turn over of staff that are rude in the main, never give receipts and always short change you, if you have the nouse to add up your item total and realise you have been over charged or dare to ask for a receipt, you are made to feel like a nuisance. Have given this place a lot of custom due to their being little else option in Liverpool for organic food but have now taken to ordering online (same products from a lot of the same farms or suppliers and cheaper I must add). If your not part of the clique and anyone who has been to the shop or around the area will know the type of people I refer to, then don't bother. I really like this shop. I discovered it today with a friend of mine. I don't actually like the smell of whole food stores, ironically, even though I love the products, so sometimes I don't go in them just because they smell bad. Heh. This one sells a lot of organic, vegan, fair-trade, and locally grown and produced groceries, teas, jams, etc. I loved the selection of jams--I so wanted to buy them all. I would also have loved to try some of the other products, but as you may have noticed from my other reviews, I don't have any spending money right now. If you love organic, vegan, health, etc. type foods, I reckon this shop is really great. And it's independent, so you can feel good about supporting a small business as well. You're best walking to the store as parking is very limited in local area and it's on a busy main road with good public transport both buses and a railway station nearby! The food range and prices could be better however staff are generally very pleasant and friendly, take plastic carrier bags and stock environmentally friendly products. read more
