I felt understood and that there was hope from the very first meeting with Dr Drell. He helped me through the worst time in my life when I felt depressed, anxious, confused and trapped. Even more important, he helped me see clearly how I was limiting myself in areas of my life that I thought were unchangeable. And he helped me develop the skills to change my way of thinking and reacting. I have worked with several psychiatrists and therapists, most have been supportive and caring but Dr Drell is all this AND so much more. He gets to the real heart of things quickly and helped me change my basic views and feelings about myself and what was possible. He is perceptive, practical, warm, and able to give very honest helpful feedback and he is very funny. His genuine compassion and caring makes it easy to discuss anything, face painful realities, and move forward. He focuses on the real issues that are happening now. He doesn't dwell on the past. He asks great questions and has wise practical advice that opened my mind to new ways of thinking. He helped me clearly see what I was totally unaware of and also face what I was avoiding. On the downside, he is in demand and I had to wait for an opening. But from the first meeting I knew I had made the right decision. Despite being busy I always felt he was there for me and available. I could always depend on him. Working with him helped me feel better than I ever imagined possible. I have never been more successful and happier. My decision to see Dr Drell was the best choice and investment I have ever made for my life.

I saw Dr. Kogan for over two years, and was worse off for it. By the time someone seeks out a…read morepsychiatrist, imo, they feel they really need help. I should have realized when she told me at the start that she would only see me if I 1) got 8 hours of sleep a night 2) ate 3 healthy meals a day and 3) exercised every day. Really? I told her that if I could do all that, I probably wouldn't be in need of help. And I should have left and never returned. It was a major mistake to keep seeing her at a time when I really needed help, but got none and in fact I feel she was harmful. She was recommended by a friend (who btw no longer recommends her) and we both found out - by comparing notes - that a Rx she put us on had significant side effects. If you miss one dose, you get flu-like symptoms. And if you go off it cold turkey, you can easily end up in the hospital. But Dr. K never mentioned any of that. I had to find a different psychiatrist to get detailed instructions on how to "taper down" to get off this Rx safely, since I no longer trusted Dr. Kogan. If you are reading this review, I hope you'll benefit and will end up finding a more capable and compassionate doctor. BTW, she gave herself a 5 star Yelp review - just embarrassing - that is in the filtered reviews. Seems she doesn't have any qualms about pretending to be a patient in order to improve her rating. There's no doubt in my mind that I'm not the only person who went to her in need of help, yet was harmed by Dr. Kogan.

When we started, I was in crisis and she was able to quickly regulate my medications and help get me stable. If not for Mia Kogan, I probably would have taken a leave of absence (if not simply leave) from college, and I would not have made many of the significant steps following my graduation. I think it's very significant that while I attended college, Dr. Kogan made the effort to Skype and call me to check in at least once if not twice a week. Dr. Kogan can be direct and to the point which is not for everyone but one of the reasons that I value her so greatly is that reality check. To the reviews below, she is very short in emails but it's really not a reflection of her personality, just her directness and that she's sending out quick responses while focusing her time in sessions. Also, the fact that she's lived and worked in the DC area for so long means that she has excellent insight into city doctors, institutions, and companies. She has been an excellent resource when I'm looking for insight on my personal career path, doubling almost as a life-coach and insider-guide. Honestly, Dr. Kogan has been a solid positive force in my life and I can not heap enough praise upon her.

He is qualified to treat virtually any psychiatric disease and seems to have special expertise in treating Bi Polar (Manic-Depressive) Disorder. I believe he is also certified in treating addictions. I have a text-book on Bi Polar Disorder and his name appears in the credits, so I think he is accomplished in the academic world as well. One major drawback of the GW MFA Department of Psychiatry is that they operate on a cash only basis. So visits are expensive, you have to pay out of pocket and then submit the receipt to your insurance on your own. This effectively shuts out most HMO patients but your PPO might give you some kind of reimbursement for your visit. He is prompt, but has limited office hours, the other time presumably for research/teaching as he is on the faculty staff.

From the start, I felt berated, judged, and blamed rather than listened to or supported. The tone was dismissive and condescending, and at no point did I feel treated with basic empathy or respect. Instead of collaborative care, the interaction felt punitive and invalidating--as if my experiences and concerns simply did not matter. Mental health care should be a space where patients feel safe, heard, and taken seriously. That was not the case here. I would strongly caution others to steer clear of this psychiatrist unless you are prepared to leave feeling smaller, unheard, and worse than when you arrived.

She asks all the right questions and actually listens and reflects on not only what the parents have to say but especially what the child has to say. It is a hard decision to medicate a child, and Dr. Fuertes takes parents' concerns very seriously. But the reality is a low dose of a medication can go a long way in helping alleviate the symptoms of a child and greatly improve their lives and those around them.
