Our offices sent a team of 14 over to Windsor this morning and we spent three hours sorting meats and poultry donated by local supermarket chains. There were many job functions and stations necessary for us to sort through 5,950 pounds of food. When the food is donated by supermarkets, all of the different meats are stored in a Foodshare walk-in freezer in big plastic bins- so the bins were full of every sort of meat found in your supermarket's meat and poultry cases. Here is what we did: Station # 1 - Big pallets full of the bins that the frozen meats were packed were delivered to us via forklift. We opened up the bins and sorted the meat by type- beef, ground beef, poultry, pork, lamb, veal, specialty, sausage, bacon, etc. Stations # 2, 3, 4, 5, -The sorted meats went to a dedicated line where teams packaged cartons for the specific types of meats. We put a sticker on the outside of the carton (beef or poultry, etc.), inspected each package for damaged packaging, marked over the UPC with a Sharpie, put a Foodshare sticker on each package, and weighed the cartons we were creating so they clocked in between 28 and 32 pounds. When a box was completed, it was stacked on a rolling cart. Station # 6 -The rolling carts were brought over to a ten degree walk in freezer where the finished cartons were stacked by category onto pallets - 24 boxes to a pallet. Station # 7 -The bins we emptied out had to be wiped down, sanitized and restacked. It was a lot of fun to see how everyone worked together doing all of these different tasks. After a while, we were efficiently working as though we were a team that had been doing this work for 5 years. It was quite a rewarding experience. Go grab your work buddies and give it a go.

I got the opportunity to volunteer at Connecticut Foodshare from a fellow foodie who invited other foodie content creators. We had a great time, and we were able to help families all across the world. We had to go through an assortment of foods to ensure they were good, and we made boxes with assorted foods. We packed 16,637 pounds of food that would provide 13,864 meals for families. I'm excited that we had the chance to volunteer at Connecticut Foodshare, where I became an integral part of a team and provided essential support to those facing food insecurity.

They have a beautiful mission to deliver an informed and equitable response to hunger by mobilizing community partners. I got the opportunity to volunteer with a group, all invited by word of mouth to sort produce separating spoiled products from the good ones. The staff were incredible with giving us the information we needed to directing us on how we can assist multiple families in need. At the end of the day, as a group we boxed 16,637 pounds of food that would impact 13,864 meals. That's incredible for 3 hours! It is amazing work and I commend all their staff for what they are doing every day to feed families in need!

I've been volunteering there since the beginning of this year (minus the three months when I was recovering from a broken wrist). Couple things. Stockpiles / shelves are getting seriously low. Our pantry is mainly dependent on Foodshare and donations from locals. Families are vetted. Some of the recipients are homeless or live in cars. Consider volunteering at a local pantry or soup kitchen, and consider donating money and / or food. It seems as though our director is weekly shopping at Walmart to buy canned and boxed non-perishable items that we would otherwise run out of. The people are generally friendly and flexible. Volunteer duties generally involve sorting and re-packaging donated goods for distribution to local charities. If you're looking for ways to contribute to the community, this is a good place to go. Approximately 75% of the food bank's labor hours are provided by volunteers so they're open and appreciative of volunteers.

When you show up they are ready for you with a plan and they are thankful for your help. There is plenty of work to do while you are there so you feel like you are making a difference but they do not compel you to stay longer than your assigned shift- which I appreciate. You work hard for the time you are their and they respect your time. They do great work in the community and I am happy to have helped them out on three occasions now. I look forward to returning.

I had a highly dissatisfactory experience with MACC Charities. The worker I spoke with (Shan non)…read morelacked empathy and there was a sense of her gaining satisfaction in her efforts to humiliate. She was unsupportive and verbally tried to discourage me from my life's aspirations. She went so far as to pretended to be an expert in a field she is not, all in efforts to derail. I asked her not to speak to me in a condescending manner, and she continued to abuse her false sense of power. I reached out to this organization during a time of need and was told by the worker that they don't "do hand outs". That if I was a worker for a company instead of being self-employed or unemployed (with no UE benefits), they'd have helped. In other words, they try to bait people into mediocrity and don't help those who need help. It's also been brought to my attention that their employees are not reflective of the population they supposedly serve (ie: lack of staff diversity). Perhaps they need to be audited to ensure their funds are being appropriately allocated, and ensure fair business practices. I discourage businesses from investing in or with the MACC organization. I also advise that their employees be mandated to take (and pass) unpaid sensitivity training and do mandated volunteer work in urban communities so they can gain perspective. I advise you donate, invest or partner in an organization that's more customer centric in their approach to humanity.

Windsor Locks Annual Food Drive

Annually, the town of Windsor Locks holds a food drive on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. It's a…read morecoordinated effort that involves WL Social Services, the Lions Club, local Boys Scouts, town businesses, and over 100 volunteers. Kudos to hard-working Heidi, WL town director of Social Services, and Wonderful Wendy, director of Youth Serices. Heidi puts her heart and soul into the effort, spending many late nights in preparation. Wendy assists with many other tasks. The goal is to obtain Thanksgiving food (turkeys, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, fresh veggies, etc, etc) for over 200 families who qualify for assistance, and also to replenish shelves in the pantry to help in the months to come. The Lions Club arranges for pickups in all neighborhoods in town between 9AM and noon (Boy Scouts collect the bags from porches). All items are dropped off in front of town hall and ferried inside by runners. Once inside, in the old gym, a veritable army of mostly teens check dates and sort products by type. I liken it to organized chaos more than synchronized swimming. Non-Thanksgiving products are then shuttled to the pantry where Heidi's asst, Darling Debbie, as well as Gracious Gabby, Affable Anne, and Cool Kristen work their magic. By 3 PM, most of the work is done, w some teen volunteers making up approx 200 bags of non-perishable Thanksgiving items. All for pickup Sunday between 2 and 4 PM by a conga line of vehicles that snake thru the parking lot. Special thanks also to Foodshare who donated large quantities of carrots, onions, and potatoes (sweet and white), as well as 32 turkeys and 20 chickens!! Overall, a success, as over 200 families get to enjoy all the trimmings of a holiday meal. 5 rewarding stars AND PLEASE READ THE ATTACHED POEM THAT HEIDI WROTE AND POSTED ON THE TOWN'S FACEBOOK PAGE THE EVE OF THE EVENT.

Rebuilding Together Hartford

It's a national organization of volunteers that mobilize to repair, modify, and improve homes for low-income homeowners. Founded in Texas in 1988, over the years, 3.4 million volunteers have worked to rehab over 100,000 homes. With 200+ chapters across the country, on the last Saturday in April, volunteers gather across the country to repair and revitalize homes. We participated in the Hartford's chapter Volunteer Day on Saturday. Our day kicked off with an early 7:30 check-in, orientation, breakfast, and T-shirt distribution at the Sarah J. Rawson Elementary School. At 8:30, we headed off to our assigned house on nearby East Burnham Street. We joined hundreds of volunteers to restore and refurbish thirteen homes across the Blue Hills neighborhood of Hartford. The home we were assigned to included 20 volunteers from Travelers Insurance. It was a long, tiring day that ran from 730 to 4. We painted, dug up and relocated rose bushes, planted bushes, moved mulch, rebuilt a closet, installed a front porch railing, replaced a large back yard clothesline, and were links in a bucket brigade chain to empty basement clutter and move it to a dumpster. There were 41 tasks on our house's punch list, and we got to them all. Shout out to Capital Ice Cream for the welcome delivery of their ice cream for an afternoon break. Shout out to the many leaders who organized the moving parts of today's massive endeavor. After several phone calls we were thrown out of our medicare benefits. The appeals process is a nightmare and set up for failure. Keypro and Livanta are not your friends. Mediscare is a complete joke you pay into it all your life work hard and get crumbs in return. FIGHT FOR WHAT IS YOURS!!!!! This agency of Medicare Advocacy turned their backs on us. There is no insurance that covers custodial care. Insurance lies to you. They want you out of the nursing home or physical rehab center in a week or 3 days.No such thing as 30 days nursing home care. .. Buh Bye...its a nightmare. You are better off getting cadillac insurance. If you are middle class you are screwed. The super rich and super poor get all the benefits. Went thru this for 3 years. MEDISCARE NIGHTMARE. They play with peoples lives. Nursing homes are a joke they have the power to call Livanta and Or Keypro tell them you are not progressing and then the Mediscare begins! I made an in house complaint an aid was abusive to my family member who was completely disabled. And the nursing home retaliated by calling Livanta. Southington Care center a so called 5 star nursing home rated by Medicare standards in Southington CT is not who they appear to be. The aids were abusive and the food was unedible no proper holding temps and no nutritional value. Medicare throws you into an appeals process and you cannot win or dispute. Its designed for Medicare not to pay for your benefits. In return you have no where to go ..your home isnt safe. DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING UNTIL YOUR ATTORNEY OR FAMILY MEMBER READS IT THEY WANT YOU TO DISCLOSE ALL OF YOUR ASSETS SO THEY CAN SEE HOW MUCH YOU HAVE THAT THEY CAN TAKE IT LATER. YOU DO NOT NEED TO DISCLOSE THAT THEY WILL TRICK YOU INTO DOING SO. So the nursing home wants their money at $500 to $650 per day. They serve you awful food not fit for a dog. Southington Health Care is one of them in Southington. They did exactly this to us. Their physcial therapist was a joke. Gerard Barton ..he had a hotel managers degree with a hotel background and no experience lol only 3 years and was not a doctor of physical therapy. Set my family member back in their care by not standing them up out of the wheelchair with a major injury who could not walk but had the ability to walk again according to multiple doctors. I have seen excellent PTs but this guy was arrogant. He wasn't qualified. Southington lied to us on the tour they said he was the best. I am an advocate and a warrior. Never stop fighting for your family member. Those without an advocate are doomed in these nursing homes. They want your house and all your money in your bank accounts. Here's the deal....all of you baby boomers better get out of the Lazy Boy chair start eating organic non processed foods and put the danish down! White flour and sugar are not your friends. Eating whole foods is important. Lots of fruits and leafy green veggies. Start walking stay active. This is what happens when you dont take care of yourself. Enjoy your life and think YOUNG! Its no fun ending up in this position. Literally backed into a corner. Its the only way to stay healthy and not get into this position in the first place. This is where the rubber meets the road. I say this out of love. You all need to know. Take good care of yourselves. Its no fun seeing a line of seniors in wheelchairs by the nurses station... slumped over talking to one another saying they are at the mercy of their abusive aids taking care of them. It broke my heart and yes I made the calls to the dept of health and elder services. These agencies are jokes. The Ombudsman in CT forget it. I have seen it all and heard it all. I was by my family members side the whole time. I thought you should know. Call your Congressperson and Governor. Keep moving forward. Good luck out there.

First, call ahead and make an appointment. Second, show up on time. The process is super easy and…read moreefficient, if you follow the guidance. Hourly street parking is available, but can get sketchy, so I parked in a lot. It cost me $10 but it was next door, simple, and I didn't have to circle and hunt for an open spot. It is a Federal Building, so there is a metal detector at the entrance. Security personnel are friendly and helpful. The Social Security Administration office is on the first floor, down the hall, easy to find. When you get there, check in at the kiosk. If you made an appointment, you will get an e-mail and/or text. When you get to the office, check in through the e-mail or text. You will receive a bar code. Scan the bar code at the kiosk, get your ticket, and have a seat I arrived 15 minutes early to find many people waiting. However, I was called 5 minutes before my appointment time and was finished within minutes! The benefit of making an appointment! Today's lunch at Gather 55, the latest Hands on Hartford food experience, offered up a truly…read morewonderful meal. The place was packed but the front of the house rep found us a perfect table against the rear wall with a view of the dining room. The gentleman who fixed/adjusted our table did a super job; hate those wobbly tables I always manage to find. The menus were clear and the ordering was super easy. The end product went way above our expectations. My dining partner ordered the Chicken Salad plate with a pasta side included. The chicken was fresh, tender and delicious [I stole a piece] and the penne pasta was just right while the celery and walnuts added crunch. I had the Salmon Wrap with spinach, avocado and ginger vinaigrette. The wrap was huge and the salmon perfectly cooked while the added ingredients made the dish even better. The crowd was lively and the atmosphere was full of love. We will return! Want to try the breakfast.
