I'm glad we came down here! The park is gorgeous, with many different sections along the waterfront. The Waterfront Trail, which is a 1600km bicycle path along the Great Lakes. There's a memorial garden, which is gorgeous, and there are a number of other little walkways and other public facilities. Even if you're just passing through, I highly recommend taking some time to stop at this park, the views are worth it!

Only recently constructed in 2004 during the first phase of the park's development, it stands at 63 feet tall and was designed as a scaled-down replica of the Tawas Point Lighthouse, a historic beacon on Lake Huron built in 1876. This lighthouse doesn't serve a traditional navigational role like its Great Lakes predecessors. Instead, it marks the entrance to the harbor and serves as a visual anchor for the park. The park itself was originally named Tri-Centennial State Park, commemorating the founding of Fort Detroit in 1701, and was later renamed in 2009 to honor Governor William G. Milliken, a champion of environmental stewardship. The lighthouse is not open for touring but the grounds around it are fully accessible from all angles. I didn't know what to expect, but it looks like the city have done a great job of fixing this park up. There is a few fitness zone with about 10 different workout machines for anyone that wants to use them. They is also two weight benches here as well. There are swings for the kids and a hammock also. There's a nice see-saw, and the jungle gym is very modernistic and upgraded. There are a couple hills the kids can play on with a little slide on one of them. There are a couple gazebos if you are looking to sit in the shade... and also benches posted around the park. The best part of the park is the view of the Detroit River and the Ambassador Bridge. Across the river, you can see Canada very clearly. There are good spots to fish here if you are into that, and if not you can just relax by the water and just catch a nice vibe. There's no trash on the ground and the park is really clean. This is definitely one of the hidden gems in the area.

It is a beautiful park in downtown Detroit (at least in the day time) and with the shaded tables, a perfect spot for a bite or a drink on a super hot day. Named Campus Martius for "Field of Mars" it is the reference point for Detroit's "mile" roads. Look for the Zero Mile Marker on the ground - Seven Mile and Eight Mile are precisely seven and eight miles from this spot, respectively. It was originally a militia drill ground back in the 1800s and the First Michigan Infantry Regiment departed from Campus Martius in 1861 for the Civil War. The park opened in 2004 and includes the beautiful Woodward Fountain, a seasonal ice rink and a seasonal beach. The - Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument is also here. Loved how tucked away the location felt, despite being super conveniently located with a large free parking lot on site at Orleans and Wilkins. There was a full bar, giant/oversize yard games, and nice outdoor seating. Little Asian Bites brought the food, DJ, and other fun vendors like Pong Detroit and Scrap Soils for composting (perfect for a food event!). We were right on the Dequindre Cut bike/foot path and had plenty of walkers and bikers passing by. Just felt like a really ideal summer evening!

Grand Circus Park back to Judge Augustus B. Woodward's master plan to rebuild Detroit after the…read more1805 devastating fire. The park was meant to be a full circle - the "circus" the name - but rising land values north of Adams Street led property owners to resist selling, leaving the park as a half-moon bisected by Woodward Avenue. It links Detroit's theater district to its financial core, and over the decades, it has hosted everything from presidential eulogies to public protests. In fact, General George Armstrong Custer once delivered a eulogy there for Abraham Lincoln before thousands of mourners. The park is adorned with statuary and fountains that speak to Detroit's civic pride. The eastern half features the Russell Alger Memorial Fountain, designed by Henry Bacon (who also designed the Lincoln Memorial), with a Roman allegorical figure sculpted by Daniel Chester French. Nearby stands the statue of Mayor William Cotter Maybury. The western half is anchored by the Edison Memorial Fountain and the statue of Mayor Hazen Pingree, a populist reformer whose legacy still looms large. It's a layered space - literally, as there are parking garages below - with memorials and a green park. Plenty of benches and tables and a free wifi. It's one of my favorite things to do when I'm visiting a city other than my own. I never know what I'm going to find and as for this park, I just happened to run into it. At first glance I didn't even realize it was a park. I noticed a few empty water fountains, a couple statues, a bike share station, and there wasn't much landscaping or anything. I'm not sure if it was just the timing of my visit or what, but it came across rather dreary. I'm not sure if I would describe it as grand but considering the location, I get the circus part. It is completely surrounded by traffic and there's restaurants, theaters, and a lot of other things to do nearby. In a way, that's a circus all on its own. Would I intentionally come back to this park? Probably not, but I can always appreciate some greenery in the middle of a concrete jungle. It's good for the soul.
