I just started getting into brewing, and even with all the information out there on the internet nothing beats a conversation with a real person to get answers to the questions I have. Every staff member I have talked to and asked questions of have been friendly and very helpful. Most important they didn't make me feel like even my most basic level question was a stupid question. I love going to the Wine and Hop Shop - they're so chill and helpful, letting you serve yourself or get help. There's always a few good things on tap, too (and my kids like the homemade soda). Grain is very reasonably priced, especially if you get a "grain card," as you can then get any specialty malt for a buck a lb, and they are fine with you bringing your own 2-row. Go there, even if you aren't a brewer and are just walking down Monroe. It's my favorite store in Madison. read more

I drive a couple hours to get my brewing equipment from here. They have had everything I need to make mead. Their in-store free samples (of beer) are appreciated. read more

I occasionally frequent this location when i reach catastrophic failure (yeast dies) and I have to pitch (I'm a commercial distiller so economy of scale si much different). Knowledgeable staff and solid products. If you re looking for any help fermenting check them out. They have not out shown brew and grow in my experience (I really like and appreciate both for different reasons) but I have heard from other home brewer/vintners they prefer hop shop read more

If you ever thought of making your own beer or wine this is the place to start. The staff enjoy their jobs and their jobs are helping you to make beer and wine. I have done both for almost 10 years and this shop has always had what I needed. Great variety of beer kits that can help you learn what is possible before you start making your own recipes. I've only done three wine kits but those too were fun and enjoyed by family and friends. read more

They were really helpful, as this is my first purchase and I felt like I was walking onto a used car lot when I walked in. There is parking in the alley behind the building. There is a huge selection of bulk grain, so you can get exactly what you want. The store is small, and not intimidating. The employee was super patient with his recommendations, did not try to sell me the most expensive things. I would give them six stars, if they brewed on site and gave classes. Seven if they sold cheese kits and scobys. Eight if they gave complimentary mani-pedis while serving store craft brewed hefeweizen and cheese. Tee hee. read more

We have been Madison's homebrewing and home winemaking headquarters for over 40 years. Locally owned, we offer high quality supplies, fresh ingredients, and free helpful expert advice to help anyone make their own delicious beer, wine, mead, cider, and other fermentables.

History

Established in 1972.

Dave Mitchell opened the Wine and Hop Shop in 1972 on Mifflin St. in downtown Madison, WI. After a few years, he moved the Shop to State St., where it lived until 1998, when it moved to Monroe St. In the summer of 2012, long-time employee Ben Feifarek took over the Shop from Dave. In late 2015, the Wine and Hop Shop moved to its present location, 1919 Monroe Street in Madison. Everyone at the Shop makes his or her own wine, beer, cider, mead, etc., and loves to talk about it. Our favorite part about working here is helping you follow your passion for making ever-improving wine, beer, and anything else ferment-able. We try to make the experience as interactive as possible. We put on classes, rent out equipment, host contests, and are always available at the Shop if you want to bring in some beer or wine for us to try. We'll give you an honest assessment of how it tastes and how it could be improved. Our prices are low, and we even offer homebrew club discounts.

Meet the Business Owner: Ben F.

Ben started his homebrewing career over 10 years ago by helping a buddy brew a Pete's Wicked Ale clone recipe. He was hooked from the first brew. So much so, that soon after, Ben started his own Beer of the Month club, where he brewed around 4 batches of beer a month and created a magazine (a shout out to his writing roots) filled with articles, stories, and games centered around beer. At the peak, the Club had around 15 members who each enjoyed a 6-pack of experimental beer each month. During this beer brewing frenzy, Ben decided he had to take it to the next level. He visited his local homebrew shop, the Wine and Hop Shop, and applied for a job. And the rest, as they say, is history.

There are coolers with lots of specialty cheeses and way more packaged liquor than I expected. Everything is a little more expensive than the grocery store, but this is a small independent business, so that is to be expected. For people who want to keep their money local, it is a very small price to pay (literally, a couple of dollars here or there). The aisles are narrow and the bottles are right on the edges of the shelves, which makes my clumsy self nervous, but they just had lots of booze. Not as big as the liquor warehouse on the west side of town, more like what you'd expect a regular grocery store to have. I have only been in here a handful of times, but the person behind the counter has been *very* nice and courteous (unlike the liquor place I mentioned earlier). There is parking behind the building and you can usually get on-street parking in front.

Out of a few pool companies I had in mind I decided to rely on Patio Pleasures because they were local and had good reviews. I'm glad I did. To get familiarized with managing a pool we scheduled a pool opening and training session so that we could get some experience. When the appointment rolled around the person they sent completely answered any questions I had. At the same time he did not do any of the product pushing that I expected to occur. Instead the treatment I got was exceedingly fair, with him even lowering the cost of the service for things he didn't have to do since we had managed it beforehand. All in all, an excellent experience. The same could be said for my experience in the store itself. The employees there were more than willing to answer my novice pool owner questions and made reasonable recommendations. I was also pleased to discover that they offered free water tests which let you know what needs to go into the water to balance the levels. I'm not sure if that's universal to stores in the pool industry but it's definitely nice to have here.

The day they came to install there were 2 employees-2! They didn't have the equipment to dig the pool, thank goodness we had a guy doing work for us elsewhere that could help with the dig. I thought they would be billed for the work but we were! & not even offered a discount for this or the water we had to supply. Beware they are not straight shooters once the contract is signed!
