Why watch Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory when you can live it!? Leave your calorie trackers at the door for some chocolatey indulgence. They have everything from ice cream (beware, the base for all the flavors is *gasp* chocolate) and unique gifts (what's better than a toothpaste tube made of chocolate?) to cakes, bars, and pies huger than your face. Everything is absolutely decadent, reasonably priced, and definitely shareable... but hey, I'm never one to judge. My absolute favorites - the chocolate covered espresso beans, the candy junkyard brownie, the chocolate bar with the gummy bears inside, pretty much all the ice creams, the Aunt Etta's or Uncle Daryl's cake. The chocolate tres leches is okay, but definitely pales compared to some of the other gems. Diabetics beware! Also, if you're not into chocolate (what?), there's a shameful corner with tons of regular candy. Yawn. Tons of seating, and I heard there's swing dancing some nights? So that's pretty cool. I do wish they would put up a sign to politely ask parties of 2 to maybe not take up a booth for 10. I'm all for romance and etc., but on busy nights it's always awkward when large groups have to borrow tons of chairs and combine tables because a couple is in one of the larger seating arrangements. I deem this as my "happy place" in the city, and my go-to place for whenever I am craving an amazing dessert and want to satisfy my sweet tooth. My favorite thing to order here is the ice cream called *Orange Sunrise*. I usually do not like orange flavors mixed with chocolate but this was just so [unexpectedly] delicious! You can definitely taste the chocolate (dark chocolate, but not strong) as well as the kick of orange. They also add tiny tiny tiny tiny bits of orange into the icecream which gives the dessert the real orange flavor. In addition, I really love the "half-price all chocolate-covered fruit" after 8pm because their chocolate-covered fruits are just so delicious and are conveniently at a reduced-price at dessert-time (after dinner). I usually get the chocolate-covered banana, chocolate-covered apple, and a box of their chocolate covered strawberries. read more

Gone downhill with the new owners and not worth the detour anymore. For years I always said a happy house was one stocked with stuff from the Chocolate Bar. One of their great items were there chocolate chunk brownies. But they removed the chunks, put on a sweet glaze and made them smaller. Well kind of like a lot of brownies out there. They got rid of the flourless tort which was (for me) the best thing. My wife and I think they are not using the same quality ingredients either. We had noted the ice cream tasted not as good but then saw by these reviews they changed who makes them. Seems, just my opinion, their focused on expanding and increasing profits over quality but we will see. Sad but we won't be going there anymore. read more

I have the biggest sweet tooth but ironically, I cannot stand desserts that are supremely sweet or heavy on sugar... weird, eh? I always want dessert, though. In the morning, in the middle of the day and at night. What's good about Chocolate Bar is that they don't stop at chocolate. They have coffee, a candy corner and cakes. I like getting knick knacks here as gifts! They make the perfect presents, and who doesn't like something sweet for their birthday, Christmas, anniversary, etc.? They have "Texas stuff", things for your pup (yay for doggie treats!), dipped cookies, dipped fruit, dipped pringles... pretty much anything and everything. Some of their desserts are on the sweeter side, but a tall glass of milk can subside the sugar rush. Sometimes they have discounts on certain slices of dessert if it's cut bad or sloppy. The Oreo cheesecake could use a bit more Oreo, and I kind of wish it was a lighter texture, but it's OK. Kind of too sweet. One of my favorites is the Tuxedo cheesecake, which was a white chocolate cheesecake on top of an Oreo cookie crust, drizzled with some caramel. Yeah, it is a little sugary, but it's the most tolerable for me. If you can't make it out to Chocolate Bar, don't fret; they have online ordering! Cakes run around $50+ give or take. What can I say, I love this place! I love their cakes and chocolate dipped fresh fruit. I took away one star because they stopped offering their dipped fruit 50% off after 8pm... It was great! My favourite is the black russian cake. Cake portions are quite big.Once I bought a slice of each chocolate cake for a friend's birthday, they were a instant hit. Never tried their ice cream but I'm pretty sure I won't be disappointed. Somehow their dark chocolate bars taste just right for me. Lots of fun designs made with chocolate would make anyone smile... I'm not really a chocolate fan. I usually think that they are too sweet. I'm also rather health conscious so chocolate is usually on my "not healthy" list. But for some reason, I really crave the Chocolatte here. It's really dense and sweet and I don't even know why I like it. I've never craved for any kind of sweet stuff in my entire life. This has to be one of the best places to fix that sweet craving! They have anything you can think of covered in succulent chocolate!!! This place is dangerous though, too many visits and you could end up looking like a marshmallow. Do try the ice cream-I enjoyed the coffee flavor. I came here with the mission of getting some Texas-shaped chocolate to send to my sister living in Chicago. I found some mini-chocolates shaped like typical Texas icons like a cactus, cowboy hat, boots and more that were super cute. I also picked up some hot chocolate mix since I'm sure it's getting to be pretty cold in IL right about now ;) While I was there I also picked up a dark chocolate peanut butter cup for my husband for his birthday. I think he really enjoyed it but he commented that he wished the peanut butter was a little more salty. I also got three dog bones covered in carob (made to look like chocolate) and sprinkles for my dog's birthday. They enjoyed those thoroughly. Now, I didn't plan on getting anything for myself but the caramel-filled chocolate bar, the almond toffee and the pumpkin ice cream were calling my name so......I didn't want to be RUDE and ignore them. I tried all three and wasn't crazy about any one in particular, though they were all just fine. I just expected to be blown away but the chocolate itself just doesn't taste all that special to me :[ I definitely like the novelty of the products they sell - chocolate shaped for several occasions including baby, wedding, Halloween, etc...very cute, but I'm just not that crazy about the taste. The ambiance of the place alone is just cool! It's a fun looking place that makes you feel like you're in a whole different place. So even if you aren't a chocolate fan, just go inside to take a look around (and check out the candylicious section that has non-chocolate items). My favorite is the ice cream, specifically the nite and day and creamy dreamy truffle. But I think the texture of their ice cream is whats so great! The carmel chocolate dipped pretzel stick is also yummy. The cakes are pretty good to but I have a different spot that has my favorite cakes which I'll review next. The best. Trust me, I'm addicted to dessert and anything chocolate, and The Chocolate Bar forever has my heart. You can't get anything bad here...everything is deicious. Ice cream, chocolate cake, cheesecake, chocolate bars, truffles, you name it. My favorites are the Oreo Cheesecake, chocolate layer cake, Red Velvet cake, Rocky Road icecream, and the plain old dark chocolate bars. If I'm having a serious chocolate craving, I'll run over and grab their dark chocolate bar next to the register and eat a few pieces, if I'm being good. If I'm being bad, I'll down the whole bar in a matter of minutes, but it really does the job of satisfying your sweet tooth. I also love how they have the "mess up" slice of cake -- These are a couple dollars cheaper than the ones in the case just because they weren't sliced to perfection! We were so disappointed on our last visit. The candy section was gone & there seemed to be a much smaller selection of chocolates on the other side. We had a chocolate covered strawberry & blackberry, both of which were good, but those were the only things that were the same. Loved this place. I have been there only once and had great experience. The ice-creams and chocolates are made fresh in-house, every thing we tried was amazing. The staff was great and friendly, helped us with questions on products and shared other info. on events. SPECIALS: After 8 pm everyday, ALL chocolate covered fruits (strawberry etc.) are 50% off. I think its high time I wrote a review for this place. Its my go-to place whenever I want something chocolate-y :) What I love most about this place is that there is something for every chocolate-lover. If you don't want cake, then there's ice cream, and if you're in the mood for something else, they got that too!! :) :) My favorite items here are the Black Russian, Uncle Darryl's, Aunt Etta's, and Bayou City Mud Pie. My friend swears that they have the best chocolate tres leches, and so every time I'm at Chocolate Bar without him, I need to bring him a slice of it. :) :). Apart from the yummy things to eat, the place itself feels like a magic land filled with chocolate and it just makes you happy while you're there. I have been to this location a few times with my father. They have nostalgic candy, insane pieces of cake, ice cream and various chocolates. I have tried a few ice creams and didn't care for them. I tried the Girl scout and it fell apart in my mouth. It was "missing something" with texture. I also tried the Lemon zest and it was disgusting in my opinion. I could not get the taste out of my mouth fast enough. My father has two scoops of chocolate ice cream and he enjoys this flavor. I had a massive slice of chocolate cake which I took to go and it was desert for two nights it was so large. I asked for the "chocolate sauce" on the side and it was on the "side" of the cake but not in a separate cup. This was strange to me as it made one side of the cake soggy. The nostalgic candy was a great sight but it is not cheep! This place is decent but having been to many desert places in my life this was not a very memorable place in my opinion. This place used to be amazing. I would go with my siblings all the time. Now it's just depressing and sad. All the fun decor is gone, the colorful, bright, candy corner is gone, and an entire cake case is now empty. They took away so many great cake flavors and ice cream flavors. It also seems to appear they don't have all the same cookies they once did. They also cut back on inventory they sell (bring back the hot cocoa mix!!). I was curious about this place so I went. When you walk in, on the left side is a chocolate/candy store where you will find all different sweets. The main on the right part where they sell coffee and chocolate. A lot of chocolate to choose from, I got the hazelnut ones and they were so delicious! Really sweet so just get a few. haha. So to begin, let me preface this review by saying I'm typically not a huge dessert guy (although I'm a huge guy). Give me meat, potatoes, anything salty over something sweet 7 days a week and twice on Sunday. That said...The Chocolate Bar is probably the one place that makes me rethink this position. You walk in, and you've been transported to a dessert wonderland...a little slice of what I think Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory would be like if it was for real. You name it, they can cover it in chocolate. All kinds of gourmet chocolate for every gift idea. But...don't get bogged down there. Do yourself a favor and make your way over to the ice cream section. It's simply the best ice cream in the world people. They make in-house all of their flavors and the chocolate added is made right there at the store. My personal favorite is Creamy Dreamy Truffle, which says a lot because I don't usually dig chocolate ice cream (more of a vanilla guy). This stuff is special. Other outstanding flavors include the Orange Sunrise, Triple Decadence, Let's Go Oreo, Nutter Butter, and many others that change in and out over time. If you want something really different, do the Orange Sunrise - it has real Valencia Oranges with chocolate ice cream! After you've tried this, make your way over to the pastries section. Their Uncle Darryl's cake won best dessert in H-Town a couple of years ago. Really good stuff. Don't miss out on the European drinking chocolate. Think about the espresso version of hot chocolate. It's basically thick hot chocolate that's ridiculously strong and good. This is probably my favorite thing here right now. Get the 4oz shot glass - it's PLENTY! So if you have a wife with a sweet tooth like mine, spoil her and take her to every woman's favorite chocolate paradise - The Chocolate Bar. This one is the Rice Village location. The Chocolate Bar has really fallen off. The recipes are clearly not the same. I've been eating Aunt Etta's chocolate cake for years and went back after a long time, not only does it look horrible on the inside and un-inviting, what they call Aunt Etta's tastes like a box cake with awful commercial icing. The ice cream is even bad. Not sure what happened but someone needs to fix it. This was a staple in Rice Village. Looks like we need to find a new dessert place. Really disappointed. I had read somewhere that some of their old ice cream flavors were gone but I thought that was it, just a few flavors. Nope. The whole menu has changed. I had a hard time figuring out what to order because the new flavors just seemed pretty generic. Also the prices may be a little cheaper but the portions are much smaller. They used to be very generous with portion sizes. The ice cream was just ok, nothing special. We got pistachio almond, double chocolate espresso, and chocolate with almond. This used to be my favorite ice cream in the world (speaking literally), and now I will not be back unless they bring back the old ice cream. The first time I came here, I couldn't help but equate it to the real world version of Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. Well minus the actual factory part...but still, it's crazy to think that so much chocolatey goodness can exist under one roof. For me however, I'll be honest when I say that I'm not a diehard chocolate fan. So personally, I find a lot of the items here to be way too sweet and rich for my liking. Take their hot chocolate for example. The chocolate is so thick that I wouldn't even consider it to be a drink - it's more like swallowing melted chocolate/fudge if anything. For a lot of people though, this is what they desire in a hot chocolate so it works out for them! Yes I know their cakes are a huge hit as well, but personally, I also find them to be too rich for me. Beware that the slices they give you are huge though! So definitely think about sharing them unless you're certain you can finish it all. Whenever I come here, I stick to just getting ice cream since they have a large variety of flavors that I find very appealing and not too incredibly sweet. My favorites include Double Shot Espresso, Orange Sunrise, and Night and Day. Feel free to try samples of different flavors though! Although I'm not the biggest chocolate fan, Chocolate Bar is still a great place to grab dessert after any meal. Recently my husband and I used a groupon for our first trip to the Chocolate Bar... and it was very yummy. If we are going to do something, we are gonna do it right, so all in all we sampled: candy bar cake, red velvet cake, chocolate covered apple slice, and a chocolate covered twinkie. Very yummy. I was a little over chocolate by the time we left (I never thought those words would be leaving my mouth!) but I was impressed. The drawback... if I'm going to spend a crap-load on chocolate, have some free water available. While there were cups by the water fountain, the fact that it was located right next to the bathroom (and that it was a water fountain and I am a germaphobic) did not entice or impress me. Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate....everywhere I turn! I've never been so overwhelmed and indecisive when it came to chocolate. There were just too many options! After perusing the various chocolate bars, molds, popcorns, nuts, fruits, etc, I finally decided on a dark chocolate candied pineapple slice and a small container of Texas Frito Brittle. I had a chocolate covered pineapple slice recently as part of an Edible Arrangements bouquet and really enjoyed it. While the pineapple from The Chocolate Bar was good, it was a little heavy on the chocolate. So much so that I could barely taste the pineapple. The taste of pineapple I did get was really sweet as the pineapple was candied. If I wasn't comparing it to Edible Arrangements, I'm sure it would have been fine. But I prefer fresh fruit when dipped/covered in chocolate. The Frito brittle was delicious! Fritos and pretzels clumped together and covered in chocolate! It had that great sweet/salty taste combination. I am planning to give this as Christmas gifts to my out-of-state family and friends. I will be back - because I completely forgot about the frozen hot chocolate they serve - how could I pass that up?? read more

The spectrum ranges from lemony sour to the richest chocolate flavor to suit your mood. I do not recommend the Boston Cream Pie. It was not good, but we gave it chance. read more
