Dr. Vaughan is an ethical and competent ENT surgeon. Dealing with chronic sinusitis myself alonf with a previous surgery, I was referred to him by several individuals. Living in California has instigated my sinus infections and I was very concerned with how the sickness persistently affected my daily living. Dr. Vaughan was able to provide a treatment plan that not only improved my symptoms, but gave me hope that a conservative approach to treating a disease can work. I saw Dr. Vaughan earlier this week and couldn't be more satisfied with a doctor visit! His staff was prompt, warm, very well-informed and efficient. He himself is equally so, and the entire process of an initial check-up for sinus issues- a CT scan, endoscopy etc. was made very smooth and pain-free. Both he and Kathleen Low were excellent at explaining issues, very patient and took the time to answer every single question I had, including suggesting doctors for related/ follow-up testing. Dr. Vaughan has been my sinus doctor for 5 years now. His knowledge, experience and skill put him far above others who have tried to fix my sinus issues and failed. I can't say enough amazing things about Dr. Vaughn, he is so patient and so very kind. I am definitely a complicated cause due to having had 2 previous sinus surgeries in the late 80's and had a cerebral spinal fluid leak which can be a complication... To say the least I was petrified to find that I now had chronic sinusitis along with pseudomonas and fungus. I fly from San Diego to see Dr Vaughn. I was sick for 3 years with an infection nobody could cure. I was sent up to see him since he is one of the top sinus doctors in the country. Dr. Vaughn has been my sinus guru since he was at Stanford University Hospital. He IS the SINUS GURU in my experience. He is exceptional in every way, he is compassionate, funny, has a great manner, is the leader in his speciality, he is so comfortable to have treat you...I am always relaxed even knowing I am going to have an appointment because he puts me at ease as I like to 'see' what he sees, so I wear the special glasses (you can see what he sees). In visualizing what my problem is, I can use that to help me visualize any healing needed. It also helps me talk myself through any flare up that may happen. I am beyond thankful for Sac ENT for allowing Dr. Winston Vaughn be a part of their medical offices. I have had eight sinus surgeries; one in NJ, one at UC Davis, one with Dr. Bernstein(Sac ENT) and the last five were with Dr. Vaughn. Yes eight surgeries, lets just say I was an extremely difficult case and no one until Dr. Vaughn was willing to take on the long haul to truly fix the problem. I started to feel I was going going crazy with all the problems from previous doctors and surgeries. He comforted me and letting me know I was not going crazy that there was a medical issue that may not be a quick fix, but he wouldn't let me out of his care until it was resolved. He was willing to explain, at my request, all the details of what was going on in my nose. He provided actual footage from my surgeries, so that we could later chat about what was going on. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, but a video is even better. If I had to, I would fly across the country to insure I continued to be a patient of Dr. Vaughn. He is confident, well educated on sinus health and most importantly up to date on the best technology available in solving a chronic sinus problem. I have had all my surgeries with him at Stanford hospital and the commute to the hospital was worth every second of my time. He cares for his patients and their families; children and husbands. He is personable and listens and cares for your health and your daily well-being. Dr. Vaughn and his staff makes doctor visits fun. I look forward to seeing him each month for my check-up. Of course as a patient I always have the 21 questions to ask, and never have I felt any of them were not worth his time to answer. He values his time and yours and is efficient without the rushed feeling. He lets you know that if you need to reach him, he is there for you rain or shine. This also goes for his staff. They understand that you are not just a name on a medical file that they have to process. They get to know you and you them, which all around is a win win. I have been seeing him now for over 6 years and thrilled with my results. There has definitely been some tough times in trying to figure out my sinus case, but never was he willing to give up or tell me that this is all he can do for me. He likes the challenge, however is very cautious in taking on a surgical procedure just because that is the protocol or what was planned. He knows that once you enter in the OR, what is visible from the naked eye, may not be what is going on internally; CT scans can only show so much. He is pro-active in his care. He'd rather deal with the issue at hand then defer it to another appointment. He knows the long term affect of drugs: steroids, nasal sprays and other medications can do to the rest of the body and uses them only as needed, not just an automatic and temporary fix just to shut the patient up. Dr. Vaughn is the advocate for you. He is willing to fight for you with your insurance companies cause he knows whats best for the patient, not what the coverage declares. He will have your back when you have issues with nurses and when other assisting doctors see recovery differently. Dr. Vaughn knows medicine, but the patients are the only ones that express the pain, discomfort, frustrations you are experiencing. Ultimately, I wouldn't have anyone else drill into my skull, poke around my sinuses with long silver tools or simply know my life story other than Dr. Winston Vaughn. I just wish he was also my PCP, dentist, eye doctor and so on. My trust and confidence in him is unlimited. read more

Dr Vaughan is one of the best doctor's I've been privileged to know. I have been seeing him for 2 years now with chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, and ultimately Samter's Triad, and I trust his expertise and his judgement more than any doctor I know. A few recaps that I think highlight having him as my doctor: 1. Per-surgery visits. I was quite scared the prospects of surgery, and the fact that what initially seemed like mere allergies had ballooned into asthma, and nasal polyps. My allergist had impressed upon me that this was serious, and that she didn't want me to be a nasal cripple; before visiting Dr. Vaughan I had done a fair amount of research and talked to 2 other ENTs. I brought 2 pages of questions for him, and he enthusiastically asked to see my sheet and answered them all. He felt that we should attempt maximal medical treatment before surgery, which meant a month of prednisone, although we eventually switched me to methyl-prednisone which allowed me to sleep better. I was very happy that he didn't want to rush me into surgery, and that he entertained my ideas of more naturopathic solutions, guiding me to things that actually have some plausible medical explanation, like tea tree oil and Manuka honey. 2. Surgery itself. Dr. Vaughan was eager to talk to me before I was put under. I was nervous, but his cheerful attitude and an interesting conversation he had with my sister relaxed me. Ultimately, the surgery took a few hours longer than expected because of extensive fungal growth in my sinuses, and I appreciated that he took the extra time and care to do the full job. 3. Followups visits. Dr. Vaughan has been rigorous about scheduling follow-ups, has communicated numerous times with my other doctors, and is often at conferences learning about new things or presenting ideas, which I'm always eager to hear about. My wife seems to think of him as some kind of a Demi-God, which I find amusing. His staff are knowledgable and friendly and seems generally happy, and his office is pleasant. I've rarely had to wait, and always feel better after visiting him. Dr. Vaughan's craftsmanship is in increasingly high demand, and he is sometimes overbooked. If you are able to visit him, you'll know why; you are working with a very special doctor. read more

My husband saw Dr Vaughan last month for help with nose/throat issues. He had been having persistant sore throat and throat pain during the past few months. Dr Vaughan performed on the spot nasal endoscopy and then went ahead to say that a CT scan would not be necessary. Dr Vaughan was very helpful in guiding us the correct answers and did not recommend any unnecessary and unwanted procedures. They were able to diagnose a long standing sinus infection and get it treated with the right antibiotics.
