I went to see Dr. Matsumoto and his team in March of this year. It was an annual physical, but it…read morewas billed as both an annual physical and a regular office visit, so I had to pay a significant amount even though annual physicals are free with my insurance. Dr. Matsumoto was also running extremely late (I was in the room, freezing in that gown, for 30 mins) and we had a short appointment. I learned from my insurance company that as soon as you mention that *anything* is not 100% normal (e.g. "oh, my knees hurt sometimes") during an annual physical, doctors are allowed to report that the visit is now "more than a physical" and bill you for it (and they get paid more too!). I have never had a doctor do this to me, but Dr. Matsumoto did. Even the insurance company agreed that it was done in poor taste. Later, I found out that Dr. Matsumoto had ordered tests that we *explicitly* talked about not needing. I wanted to get a stool sample done for colon cancer as it runs in my family. The doctor and I talked about how I did *not* need to get tested for Giardia, Salmonella, or E. Coli due to my lifestyle (no camping, no unfiltered water, no meat, etc.). To my surprise, I was later billed for all these other tests. I tried to resolve this with the Palo Alto Medical Foundation and Dr. Matsumoto himself over several months, and they refused to help. They charged me $240 for the "free" annual physical and $370 for these tests I did not want. On top of that, the entire time I was trying to get this situation fixed, Palo Alto Medical Foundation would not stop harassing me. They sent paper bills and e-communication constantly. My insurance company said that during disputes, the providers are not supposed to harass their patients for payment, but they did. 0 stars for both Dr. Matsumoto and Palo Alto Medical Foundation. I will not be returning to either the provider or the network.
