Whenever my middle son (6 years old at the time) and I would begin to sound out words and start "Mommy's version of school #TIGER MOM Studies" things began to go South FAST! I could tell his anxiety would increase when he would stumble on the words that I THINK that he should know, and he could also sense my frustration which started creating tension whenever it was time to sit down and "read". I didn't want the anxiety to be present because our family loves to read and I had good intentions whenever I sat down to teach him to read, but the frustration from both of us was just too hard to overcome, he became fragile and sensitive as he noticed his oldest brother who started to dive into Harry Potter books and so on. Once a friend of mine mentioned that her kids went to a reading center, I was so intrigued by it that I looked into further. I reached out to Janelle (owner/instructor) and we met in-person to make sure that her program would be a good fit for my son and that if I were to sign him up, that he would thrive and improve significantly in order to warrant the out of pocket expenses. Ms. Janelle gave my son and an in-person assessment and I could tell that her assessment was accurate and that she could see both his strengths and weaknesses pretty quickly and after chatting about those, she assured me that she could create/continue an environment for my son and others like him to begin their reading journey. Here is the breakdown of my son's experience at Within Reach/Janelle and fellow instructor Camille: -He began reading at a level 1 program in November 2017 -He currently is now at a level 3 program in August 2018 -In order to see results, your child needs to attend sessions twice a week (Ex: Tuesdays/Thursdays or Mondays/Wednesdays) at $30 for each session. Each session is 1 hour long therefore: $60/week -Arrive a few minutes early/on time in order to optimize the entire time for class. -Both Janelle/Camille make the learning part of reading, so fun and rewarding that the kiddos are excited to do their homework/worksheet, journal, ready out loud, and play fun reading games. In summary, Janelle/Camille have a great reading program and one that speaks to these kiddos in a way that doesn't create any negative emotions to what can be- a difficult journey and can negatively detract the desire to read. I am so thankful for Within Reach and it's been such a blessing. My son loves to read out loud and most recently, he was a part of the Summer Reading program where throughout the summer, they log the amount of time/pages/books for each day and turn it in for raffle tickets. In addition to the raffle tickets/prizes, the Top 10 performers, are able to go on a fun field trip. My son tied for 6th place in the reading program. He enjoyed the healthy competition and it was fun bonding with him and seeing his improvement with each book that he read aloud! I am so excited for his potential and I think that if any parent is seeing their child struggle, I encourage you to schedule an assessment, see if there's any financial allocating that can be done. I am so thankful for having found Within Reach Learning Center & recommend it 100% to other parents. I was looking for a program that could: 1) help set a foundation in my son's interest/learning how to read and 2) bridge the gap in his learning during the summer months between preK and kindergarten. I cannot say enough about Ms. Janelle and what she did for my son over the last school year! My son had done 'distance learning' for Kindergarten in 2020/2021. He was 'in person' for first grade, but it was an emotional adjustment. We just wanted him to acclimate to being away from home and mom and dad and academics took a back seat. When he was entering second grade this year, we wanted to help him focus on the academics more and 'make up the gap' from the previous years of numerous adjustments. So, we found Ms. Janelle online and met with her and LOVED her! Through the past year, he has gone twice a week, she has encouraged him, she has kept in close contact of his progress, his teacher has also been in contact with me over his progress and he has had fun going (especially at holidays when Ms. Janelle dressed up!). We absolutely love everything about Within Reach! My daughter really struggled with reading and we couldn't tell if there was something deeper happening. A friend told us about Within Reach and Janelle (owner) and how it made such a difference in their children's lives. We received an evaluation and my daughter enrolled and within 6 weeks, moved up a level in her reading and writing skill set! She started to gain more confidence and trust in herself that she can read and to feel comfortable enough to at least try and make the effort which will give her rewards and incentives to keep moving forward. Her penmanship greatly improved, too. I can recognize her letters now and it's like a 180 from what she was like before coming to the learning center. I have two children that attend Within Reach. My daughter has been attending sessions for both math and reading for the last year and has made tremendous progress. She was reading below grade level when she started the program, with zero confidence and zero self esteem about her reading abilities. Now she is reading at grade level with much more confidence and is excited about what she is able to read. On the math front, she is consistently in the highest math group at school and gets the continued support she needs from her sessions at Within Reach. My son is not yet in Kindergarten but has started the Beginning Reading program at Within Reach and after just a few short months already knows between 30-50 sight words and is reading short books. My daughter has been going to WithinReachCenter for more than a year. She has been going to tutor for both math and reading. The center has done a great job in boosting my daughter's confidence and self esteem on her math and reading.
