For a university dedicated to science, technology and medicine, students here are surprisingly gifted in the arts (we've got several orchestras and choirs, as well as the main college orchestra which won the competition for the best University Orchestra in 2008) and sports. Located in South Kensington but with campuses around Hammersmith, Paddington, Chelsea and White City there's loads of things to do, and easy access to the rest of London for nights out. And the campuses themselves look great. Our union has vastly improved, and is cheap (of course) which makes up for the house prices in London. And you get to graduate in the Royal Albert Hall. Bonus. It is also a great way to find people with similar interests. It seems to be smaller than the similar adult education institute in Covent Garden, City Lit. But the quality of teaching is about the same. In fact, I believe some teachers teach at both schools.

What I love about the location is the fact that it's a London University, it's in zone 3 and if you want to get into central you just have to hop onto a bus or tube and you're there quickly. However, you're just enough out of the hustle and bustle with places like Richmond Park on your doorstep. The university itself has a great campus. Froebel is the gem with its beautiful manor house and lake and is the base for teacher training and education, Whitelands is the sports college and Digby Stuart and Southlands are for those who study humanities. Though I do English Language and Linguistics I chose to be a Froebel student. There's something about the atmosphere at Froebel that you don't get anywhere else- everyone knows each other and it feels like one big family! The nightlife is great with something happening every day of the week whether it's a big themed night out at Fez Club or the Bop or just a quiz at one of the bars. Sports teams play a big part of life with men and women's football and rugby, tennis, rowing, lacrosse and ultimate frizbee to name but a few! I'd definitely recommend getting involved because you've got 20 friends instantly! If you're in the process of choosing a university give it a look- you get the fun of London and the beauty of Surrey all tied up in one neat little package.

ESPECIALLY if you are an international student…read more Roehampton is absolutely horrendous at making a schedule in a timely enough manner that you don't have to pay a fortune to get a flight home for breaks or end up having to change your flight which costs a pretty penny. For a uni with a lot of international students you would think they would be more considerate. They always release the year schedule about only 2 months before you actually have to be there and getting a plane ticket in that time frame is horrible. Also, along with that they take their sweet time releasing exam time tables. A week into break and we just got told when our exam would be even though they knew which classes were given an exam last spring and had an actual copy of the exam at the start of term. And the final thing is (at least for the history program) every staff member has a different way of the way you should do assignments. I have written 3 critical commentaries just this term. 2 for one teacher one for another. I wrote all three in the same style, I got a first and a 2:1 from one teacher and the other teacher completely failed me. Since staff don't have the same expectations, every assignment is you trying to figure out what they are wanting and has to be trial and error. Along with that they have no problem giving you one week to do 2 major assignments (one was a 2500 word essay) and 3 minor assignments. The positives of the uni is it's nicely located to travel all over London easy if they are not doing construction and the campus is very pretty. The night life and activities they put on are a lot of fun, just the academics need a lot of work.

Firstly it is important to mention that I cannot speak for every course, I only speak from my own experiences of my own course which was based in the humanities department although speaking to people who have worked on degrees in other schools, they too have similar things to say. My biggest issue with Greenwich University is that a lot of the people I came across were not what I would regard as degree standard students. In my third year classes I sat open mouthed as students gave presentations which were littered with spelling mistakes, no punctuation, paragraphs or capital letters and poorly thought out arguments and ideas, and I was even more aghast at staff who allowed this to happen. I might expect that kind of standard from a secondary school student but seeing THIRD YEAR degree students present that made me feel as if the value of my degree was somewhat diluted. With regards to student standards, the buck surely stops with the university's hierarchy who mark and pass these students' coursework. It is as if they don't mind students being sloppy and lazy. Classmates were allowed to hand work in late with no questions asked and the lack of enthusiasm from all parties was hardly inspiring. In fact I found it quite infuriating. The staff at Greenwich on my course were not particularly helpful either. Technicians and IT staff treated enquiries almost like an inconvenience and I did not pick up much knowledge or help from them. Lecturers were a little better though with some lecturers going the extra mile to help students (well, the ones who cared enough about their degree to ask for it). I found student life to be a little lacking too with not much on offer to entertain students. The campus bar was a little half hearted and I had no real desire to go there, opting for the pubs around the area instead. Guessing by the emptiness of the bar on most nights, it is probably safe to say that most other students felt the same way. This may be something which has changed since I left as new Student Union presidents take over, but I can't see that it would have improved too much. If you're looking to go to university then I strongly suggest giving Greenwich a miss, especially if you are serious about your education. The poor standard of students renders your degree almost worthless and there are much better universities in which you can spend your money. Such was the disappointment of my Greenwich experience that I chose to go and top up my education with an MA at another university just to try and earn a little respect when approaching employers.

Technically it's the Old Royal Naval College and Greenwich university is just a part of that, along with Trinity College of Music, the Chapel and the Painted hall amongst other nooks and crannies. A baroque structure on the banks of the river Thames and adjacent to the Queens house (well, one of them), every aspect of the architecture is beautiful and awfully nice to just sit in or stroll around the grounds. Something I always like to do when I'm in the area is to grab some lunch and a drink and sit in the grounds near the Trinity college building when the music students are practicing. Alternatively, one can grab a drink in the Old Brewery which is on-site and backs on to a patch of grass outside the Trinity block. The Chapel is... well, a large-ish chapel and the painted hall, although I don't particularly like the painting style going on in there it's still quite spectacular to see and also holds some Lord Nelson memorabilia (his funeral was held in here). Overall, Reading is a good uni that keeps up with, and in some cases leads the field in, the various disciplines it teaches. My only rub is the expense, being in the area it is it can be a real financial strain to live here but they make up for it with their content and quality of teaching. The Bulmershe campus is apparently closing in the next couple of years so they are slowly closing down the ammenities on the campus, this could be a real pain but they are building a new facility on Whiteknights to replace everything so it could turn out very well.
