Me and my flatmates came here after signing our lease for our flat at DJ Alexander just down the road. The place had quite a nice appearance about it with lots of wood wherever you looked and seemed quite cosy and the clientelle seemed really friendly as did the staff. There were lots of drinks on tap including several real ales. It would be good to come here to watch a football or rugby match as I could imagine the atmosphere would get pretty intense in here. If I was more local to here I would definitely come more often.

The main bar has nothing wrong with it although having another one or two real ales on would suit me personally but the rooms at the back afford the whole place an extra dimension. The brass tabletops are well maintained and polished and the room we occupied for a while last night has its own tv so would be an ideal spot for a group to congregate to catch match coverage. Not forgetting either the collection of St. Bernard's FC (Scottish Cup winners in 1895) memorabilia that's on display. All in a great local bar that I'll aim to patronise more often.

My first gripe is that they placed the sandwich on a panini press with the lettuce inside. Ughhhhh. This made the lettuce all soggy and inedible. Second, there also used to be cheese on the sandwich, which although not a typical item on a club sandwich, I thought this was an excellent addition. Third, what happened to the skinny frites? Perhaps it was the time of the week/year and they were out. Either way, my personal preference was the skinny fries, cheese and toasted bread. I'll still frequent the Argyle, since it is my local and as far as drinks and atmosphere go, it's great. However, i'll be hesitant to order my favourite club sandwich again. At least they have burgers!

The the stafff are friendly enough and the customers are usually locals who use it as their standard drinking hole. I pre-drank here with my flatmates a few months ago on a Friday night and, whilst it was busy, there wasn't the great, vibrant atmosphere that you get in some other smaller bars. They do have wall mounted TV screens which show the latest matches and the drinks are pretty well priced, but it's just not really my kind of pub.

The staff are friendly, the prices are reasonable, the atmosphere is standard Edinburgh quiet-ish pub. There's not a lot of difference between this and say, a dozen other pubs in the city centre, bar the location - but I always pop in. It has that homely feel to it. Give it a go!

I wasn't really too optimistic about the pub, thinking it was going to be full of old men and the traditional pub decor when we walked in only helped fuel this idea. but on closer inspection, there seemed to be a good range of people within the pub and there was a good friendly atmosphere there. There was a good range of drinks on offer in there with a range of ales and spirits and the prices weren't too bad either. I wouldn't particularly recommend the pub to students, but if you live locally, it definitely seems a nice friendly place to come and catch up over a reasonably priced drink.

SIZE: Has a large feel to it but is in fact not too big, with plenty of seating about, and a couple of extra seats in the alcove towards the front. FEEL: The pub has an open feel to it, and is decorated in a tasteful, traditional manner. RANGE: The pub stocks a regularly replenished supply of real ale, and they also have a wide selection of whiskies and spirits. No Strongbow to be seen (a good thing), and instead they have real cider on tap. TOILETS: Can be accessed from two sides if the bar is busy. They are clean, decorated like the rest of the pub and with modern, functional fittings. Now here is a good pub. Cask and Barrel opened relatively recently, and replaced an ageing bar which had maintained little or no interest for a long time. I recently started going to this pub with a large group of friends and was pleased to see that it was a delightful little place, reminding me of a similar place of quality: the Cumberland Bar in the New Town. Drinks are not inexpensive, but the prices are reasonable for the quality and choice provided. There is a 30p charge for using a card, but with a cash machine just around the corner this makes little odds. The staff are friendly, and if you ask for a taster of a beer or cider they will oblige happily, offering their opinions and advice. It is popular with a wide demographic, and with a large number of younger people like myself in attendance the place has a great feel. In these more quiet summer months before the festival there is no music playing (a relief, after having to cope with annoying pseudo-bars that play music far too loud) and there are five television screens sitting idle about, no doubt resting following the business of the World Cup and the Open. I was pleased with this place. I would recommend it to anyone. An overenthusiastic thumbs-up again from me.

The decor inside is warm and welcoming. Would be nice to have some high seats at the bar, but it's not a major issue.
