We were in the area and stopped by Woodstock square to check out their Saturday farmers market. The grounds are pretty and well maintained. The location has several landmark buildings with plenty of unique boutique shops and restaurants lining the square. Sections of streets are cobblestone paved adding to its historic charm. Surprisingly, this is also the location where nearly 30 years ago Groundhog Day was filmed. The opera house was the location of the Pennsylvanian Hotel and the pavilion in the center was Gobbler's Knob where actor Bill Murray who plays a local newscaster is stuck in an unfortunate time loop while reporting on Punxsutawney Phil's annually celebrated shadow sighting. If you want to partake in some winter fun and movie history, the Square holds their own Groundhog Day on February 2nd. read more

Woodstock really did a great job on the square. It's a nice place to hangout or visit one of the many shops around the square.

A pretty cool public square is in a pretty cool town and usually has some kind of event happening. It's a good place for catching some live music. Woodstock Square is nice any time of year. Especially when it's warm though because there's more events. There's things like farmers markets that are popular among townsfolk and visitors. For a small town there's a lot of interesting things around here. It all starts with the historic town square, which is bigger than it looks. There's lots of charming old buildings around it, and there's lots of hip restaurants and stores. In the square is a gazebo. There's often some musician or singer performing from it. Also this is a good place for movie buffs. Groundhog Day was filmed here. There's a plaque about where Bill Murray stepped on the sidewalk, located on the north side of this. Also there's a farmers market. This is on weekends starting in spring. Good place to check out the spirit of the town and have fun. It can get crowded with all the stuff going on. This is enjoyable for festivals or whenever. read more

Love the Square, the friendliness, artistic sensibilities and people. Favorites include Winestock, for the best original music bookings, Between The Lines, a quality bookstore with upbeat knowledgeable employees, great book clubs and one of the best places in the midwest for chocolate and baked goods, Pauli's Deli, homemade, NGO, organic, Marie's mexican fare (homemade and organic), Expressly Lesley, better than average vegetarian fare, Rose (Pauli's other restaurant on the Square), reminiscent of a restaurant one might find in Italy or France, with some of the finest baked goods and lobster dishes I've had. Sparrow, thrift shit and The Greenspot have a beautiful selection and welcoming staff. The Starbuck's is better than average, clean, welcoming and inclusive of all. Disappointments continue to be Ethereal/SoeakEasy and Classic Cinemas who many anticipate a much needed change in ownership and management, which is inevitable to attract young and young at heart creative types. it's a great walking area, with the Blue Lotus Temple for classes, lectures and community meditation, the yoga studio, and two fine bakeries. Music on the square and the Farmer's Market are community favorites. Many of us hope that Classic Cinemas will change ownership and actually screen classic films (such as Truffaut, Kurosawa and better international films), as well as Ethereal and Speakeasy bar which are dark, dreary and frankly no longer fits the changing flavor of the city. Several people have commented on the escalating prices on the Square. 12 dollars or more a sandwich is probably beyond the reach of many these days. We hope the city will accommodate diversity to engage youth for a lifetime. read more

Each store window has its own personality, with a beautiful park smack dab in the middle. Every holiday is celebrated, with festivals aplenty, making it the perfect spot to hang out with loved ones or even enjoy some time for yourself. Their food truck festival is my personal favorite. To top it all off, a portion of the infamous movie 'Groundhog Day', starring Bill Murray, was filmed here. My Grandma used to take me to the square when I was younger. I always loved it. Many years around the sun, moves across the country and phases of life passed and I am so honored to be able to be able to walk my children down the same paths I used to wander when I was their age. The square hosts so many great events and is a great place for the community to meet up and support each other. Woodstock! Usually we are in town twice a year, so if we have time we sit and people watch in the park. It is really a perfect park in the middle of a town square. There is a large bandshell which is used in the summer for weekly concerts. If you are fortunate when there is a festival on the grounds, or a performance at the nearby Opera House, then that is an optimal time to check out the park and square. If you walk around the square, I'd advise checking out the The Double Yolk Cafe for breakfast. The Taqueria La Placita can be very hit and miss. (I'd say find Mixteca Mexican Grill & Tequila Bar on Eastwood Drive and you'll be much happier.) Check out the chocolates at Ethereal Confections but I can't advise much else there. Yet again, this quaint, historic town square delivered! My dad & I found that the all volunteer city band was playing a free concert in the gazebo (the very one from the movie Groundhog Day). What a wonderful suprise to find the friendly folks scattered about to enjoy a lovely evening filled with music & for a delightful bonus the was a guest violinist from the Marines - he was OUTSTANDING. This darling town never fails to delight - from the beautiful families milling about, the restaurants buzzing with business & sidewalk seating, I cannot imagine a more perfect place to spend free time around people. Woodstock Square is perhaps the center of the best little downtown in all of Chicagoland. Better known as 'Gobbler's Knob', the main town square that was transformed for the film Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray. You can head into the park on the square and see many of the sights from the film, I believe the only placard here is from the first snowfall dance from the movie, which is located the side of the main gazebo. This is also where Punxatawny Phil is anointed every morning throughout the film. This town square is beautiful for a number of reasons beyond it's Hollywood history. In the winter it's snow covered but still kept up and perfect for building a snowman or making snow angels (just like in the movie). In the spring, summer, and fall it's just as lovely. With a weekly farmer's market around the square and the perfect spot for picnics, jamming out with your band, playing with your kiddos, meeting up with friends, or paying tribute to veterans at the various different memorials set up in the park. They celebrate a lot of different holidays and have fun events planned on the square weekly. If you're even in the mood for an off-season parade, check out Woodstock's home site and they'll likely be putting something fun, unique, and interesting on. Another great thing about this square is that it's the spot-on center of a truly wonderful town that's chock full of dozens, upon dozens of outstanding and stellar businesses to visit, and it's all very doable in day or even long afternoon. On a warm and sunny day we made an impromptu trip down to Woodstock to see the sights. We've passed it on the train several times and finally made it into town by car. Our first stop was the Square where there was a folk music festival happening. We grabbed a shady spot in the grass and people watched for a bit. It's definitely a nice place to spend the afternoon and there are tons of cute shops bordering the area. If you're a fan of the movie Groundhog Day you'll see some familiar buildings and there's a plaque for the movie in the Square that we unfortunately missed due to the crowds. If you're in the area it's a fun detour through the center of town! read more

Also, this place holds arts & crafts fairs, music concerts in the park gazebo (check online or northwest daily herald newspaper for event times & dates), there's a haunted house in October, and come here in February on groundhogs day to celebrate Groundhogs Day... The town stood in as Punxsutawney, PA in the movie in which Phil Connors played by Bill Murray relives a day over and over. The square is surrounded by many restaurants, shops and historical buildings - Old Mc Henry County Courthouse and the Woodstock Opera Plaza. I loved this square. We were out for a drive and wandered into downtown Woodstock. What a nice surprise. They have a quaint, picturesque square. We were there on a Sunday morning and they had live music, how fun! There are many different shops around the square as well as restaurants, coffee shops, and fun looking bars. We will make plans to go back and bring friends. They have a great little theater that I'd like to go to see a production. We had a great time and spent a few hours. Give them a chance, it's great to see a thriving downtown! read more

During the the month of December I was very pleased to find the Lions Club had a Santa in the Square. My son of 3.5 was thrilled. Santa told us he had been there for over 50 years every year. He was terrific! It was free and donations went to the food pantry of Woodstock. Great cause. Our family loves to visit the Woodstock Square all year around and there are many fests and happenings all year round. The jazz is great and there are many restaurants to try. We go as much as we can. :-) Also, the farmers market is very nice. I really like the variety is excellent and the fall visuals are exceptional. A must see in winter in and fall! We also enjoy the movie theatre in the Square. They do a great job and are very nice. read more

This was an excellent way to end a mini road adventure thru our great state of Illinois! Being a bit of film buff I deliberately put this on my travel map. This was so neat, but I prepared by 1) refreshing my mind with a showing of Bill Murray's comedy classic "Groundhog Day" and 2) printing off the Woodstock square movie location info and map. It was a quick walk to all the movie locations and each was fitted with a plaque commemorating it's immortalization on film. This town truly cares about its place in history even before the movie. There are many beautiful turn of the century Victorian homes that have been preserved nicely and have historical preservation as landmarks. The town square is simply breathtaking in its cleanliness and lovely buildings plus being a great way to unwind at a cafe or sitting in the park. read more
