... memories ... I…read morewas rearranging a bookshelf recently and came across this book. It is one I had not seen in quite some time, and seeing it again sure ignited a wealth of memories of my very many 'UBC days'. The book: The University of British Columbia - A Souvenir -- by George Woodcock and Tim Fitzharris. A quote from the forward: ".............. a lasting reminder of this special environment for anyone who has ever visited or been a part of it". For me, those days started in the late-1950's, and continued through to the mid-1960's. UBC was definitely a "special environment" -- it changed and dominated my life in such wonderful, exciting, and fulfilling ways.

+ Beautiful campus! + Polite, helpful people & ambience…read more + Fascinating architecture, including the UBC Faculty of Forestry and the Koerner Library shaped like an open face-down book. + The Barber Library and the bright blue water fountain before it offer an aesthetic photogenic scenery. - Too bad some places such as the UBC Bookstore, the Anthropology Museum, and the IKB Library weren't open when I visited early morning or during the summer. I really wanted to visit the Harry Potter-esque section of the Ridington Room. - $18 to access the beautiful Beaty Museum? Man, wish it was free. + lol they have a nude beach right by campus. About 300 steps down Trail 6. There were only 5 ppl down there, all clothed. Prob cuz it was cloudy and cold. It rained a little. As for my paid parking, per my parking receipt and my G Pay bill: $8 for 2hr + $0.85 service fee = $8.85, but as for my bank statement, it's: $6.53 USD + $0.19 foreign transaction fee. The conversion 1.37 CAD = 1 USD checks out. No biggie.

My rating is very depending on what you're looking for in a library…read more If you're looking for a quiet place to study, turn around immediately. This library is often filled with kids running around throughout all times of the day and limited seating. If you're looking for a DVD to kick back after work, the selection of DVDs is great from new releases to older classics. I would almost venture here rather than blockbuster (does blockbuster still exist?) If you're looking for the latest magazine, you may be in luck. Often dunbar residents leave copies of magazines they are done with in the free section. I have found the latest issues of the economist as well as home and garden. aren't dunbar residents swell! Sadly I cannot actually comment on the selection of books as I'm prone to purchasing my next reading indulgence rather than borrowing it from the library. Interestingly it's the non- library book finds the dunbar library offers that make it a pleasant addition to the dunbar neighbourhood.

As the other other reviewer noted, this library is great if you have kids - not so great if you…read morewant a place to study or read. The computers are often taken by kids playing computer games and finding a quiet place to read is difficult due to the "sing-a-longs" that are a regular occurrence. It is a shame because this branch does have a great selection of books and dvd's but the atmosphere doesn't encourage browsing.

My first stop for the UBC Alumni Weekend 2012…read more This was established in 1999 and is headed by Dr. Hennie J.J. van Vuuren, who lead the wine library tour today. This guy likes his wine! It is located in the basement of the building out at UBC and they opened this library for tours this weekend. The library is divided into two parts. A tasting room and the actual cellar. The cellar was dark, humidity and temperature controlled. When you first enter, you see the tasting room. There is a bar full of glasses and a cupboard, of which the inside panel that has autographs of various Nobel laureates that have visited the tasting room. The cellar is locked by a heavy oak door. Inside the cellar, there is a secondary gate for more wines. Funny thing is, the most expensive wine they have (~$12,000 for a Chateau Cheval Blanc magnum) is located outside this secondary gate! I didn't ask whether they had any first growths, but I did ask about a Chateau Petrus, to which he chuckled and said that they drank it!! It was worth about $10,000. They do buy some wines as well as accept donations for the library. In addition, they also store wines that are made by the faculty and students. I did learn a few things about cellaring. I never knew that the choice of wood used in the cellar was important, because it can affect the wine. Corks breathe, so it can acquire the scent of the wood. This is not open to the public, generally speaking, but they offer tours every now and then. If you're like me and a bit of a wine enthusiast, this is one place to visit!
