The…read morenext day I was visiting shops and needed to go to the restroom and remembered the one in the lobby of the George, right past Hey I Like It Here. I've been visiting Marfa for over ten years and each time it seems more commercialized, crowded, and expensive. This shop is typical of the higher end businesses populating Marfa but they had some nice items such as face and hair masks, candles, t-shirts and a fun assortment of unique soft and hard beverages. I felt guilty about only using the bathroom since I wasn't a hotel guest so I bought a hair mask and pretty silk printed bandana (made in Portland). Unlike many of the other places in Marfa, HILIH was actually open on a Wednesday afternoon. Most businesses we tried to visit were closed even though they advertised themselves as being open. This wasn't totally surprising since Marfa mostly caters to weekend visitors. Service was friendly and accommodating.

This is a review of the Block Tour…read more The tour itself was fine, but charging $20 for a 45-minute tour (the website says 90, but that's just not the case) is ridiculous. You see a few neat spaces, but about half of the spaces within the block are off-limits, including the more interesting library, and both sets of living quarters. (You can only peer into them through windows, hurriedly.) There wasn't as much background or explication as I expected -- nothing at all about Judd's working style or how he used the galleries, for example. Disappointing.

Strangely, they do not allow children under 12. This was not clear from their mobile site. We were told, they do not want children running around the property. Langton would have done exactly that. After driving for hours I was going to go anyway. This meant Keri, Langton and Jack Wuest had to occupy themselves for an hour and a half while I went on the tour. I would like to return to Marfa again and spend more time there, but there is a precious vibe - no kids under 12, and my guide was rattled when I was conferring more about the artist when she was giving her introduction.

Technically, it's not in Marfa at all but rather in Valentine, Texas about an hour from Marfa. Artists Ingar Dragset and Michael Elmgreen created it in 2005 and the items inside the store are from the 2005 Prada collection. It's meant to be a stab at art and the all-consuming need to spend. You cannot enter the building. This landmark is considered a museum. Fencing around the museum contains locks left by visitors. This iconic installation is a must-see. Literal roadside attraction in the middle of the desert.

Prada Marfa is one of those stops that's way more impactful in person than it looks online. It's witty, a little haunting, and honestly kind of poetic: high-fashion consumer culture dropped into the middle of nowhere. It's a quick visit (there's not much to do beyond take it in and take photos), but it's absolutely worth it if you're anywhere near Marfa. The best part is how the landscape becomes part of the art wide sky, long light, silence, and that perfectly framed window display. Come around golden hour if you can. Tips: there's no shade and it gets windy; be careful crossing/parking by the highway; and if you're expecting a museum experience, reset your expectations it's more of a "pause and think" moment than an attraction. Weird, iconic, and memorable.

I stopped in on a quiet Friday afternoon, just passing through, and left with more than just a beautiful piece of art--I left with a story I'll carry forever. The gallery that Julie and Bruce Lee have created is cozy and curated with heart. Local artists fill the walls, each piece breathing with the character of the land. If you find yourself anywhere near this part of Texas, do yourself a favor and stop in. Even if you don't buy anything, you'll leave with something: a little more soul, a little more story.

The couple running the place are delightful and full of great stories and information on their artists and the surrounding area. HiGHLY recommend you make a point to visit because this is quintessential Western folk art at its finest. I came for one artist and was delighted to find numerous others to enjoy. Kerri does a great job making it warm, welcoming and FUN to go shopping…read more Walk up to the door and you are greeted by adorable yard art (this time it was fun little poodle-like doggies) and a sign encouraging you to photograph the murals on the sides of the buildings. As you enter the gallery your senses are immediately overtaken by how much amazing cool stuff is literally everywhere. My 7yr old daughter exclaimed "wow mommy this place is so awesome!" the moment we set foot inside. Although she's been in before, the store is ever changing with decor and goodies everywhere. There are paintings, sculpture and photographs- all originals - throughout the store. Fun jewelry, beautiful clothing and gift items galore are in every nook and cranny. I highly recommend walking in and going straight back, down the hall to start. And then work your way forward again as you look at both sides of the walls. It's like art, color and vibrance jump off the walls at each turn. They have custom framing available and although I didn't get any done, my friend who lives in Alpine swears they are the best (compared to Dallas, TX for pricing and quality). I was delighted to see original paintings from an artist we saw in a friend's home. My daughter chose 3 paintings as a gift for her dad (Fathers Day was upon us) very reasonably priced at $85 each. I didn't want them sitting in my truck as I ran more errands so Kelly offered to package them for us to pick up the next day on our way out of town. During past trips to Alpine, and Kiowa Art Gallery, I have purchased tunic tops, earrings and hand-blown glass ornaments. This is one of our favorite places and we love popping in when we visit Alpine!
