SHELLFISH ALLERGY: They recently updated the menu to include shrimp items which after speaking with staff they cannot deem safe to order non-shrimp items if you have a shellfish allergy due to cross contamination. Therefore I cannot eat here anymore. This makes me sad as it's close to work and it was a consistent lunch option.
So, this was nothing special. All seating is outside. Parking was limited ao it took a few drives around the block to find something. Service was fine. I ordered and had to wait about 25 minutes (evidently there was a huge order before me). However, as for the most important part, the food. It was just okay. Sure thw chicken was big, but too big to eat normally. I tried medium and it was pretty good heat. But it wasnt tasty heat. The fries and sauce were good though. Overall, it wasnt as great as i would have hoped.

The service was positive and welcoming, and the atmosphere was pleasant. We ordered at a table that was effectively the ordering counter. There were printer-paper-sized laminated menus to browse through. I got a Sando Meal at the HOT spice level with fries and a drink, and also tried the One Strip Challenge (1 HOT HOT Tender). You could choose between fries or slaw and the drink was a soft drink of your choice. The sandwich at HOT was great. The fries were good to pair to eat, although I wondered if the slaw would've been a better pairing. The HOT had a good amount of spicy and flavor but not to much that it was unbearable. The one strip challenge was excellent. The tender was huge. They also provided two disposable gloves to eat with, which was a great idea. If you're a favorite of spicy food, this is a must try, the spiciness slowly builds up to a great peak. Thankfully the drink that came with the sando helped with the hotness. After trying this, I would definitely recommend having some drink (water, milk, etc) to help with anything on the HOT HOT level. The tingling spice sensation in my mouth lasted for a few minutes and beyond. This is a great place to go if you like spicy chicken. I'll definitely be back!

Hands down the best chicken sandwich in the East Bay; a juicy cut of red meat covered in a crispy exterior, perfectly balanced by a cabbage slaw and a spiced mayo dressing. Truly a phenomenal eating experience. I got the sando combo on Monday night; there was no wait, and the food took around 20 minutes to prepare. I got medium spicy, which was the perfect amount of heat for someone who enjoys spicy food. This place is a must stop if you want a good chicken sandwich. Note: they do not take mobile orders
When I saw picutres, it reminded me of Howlin Ray's from LA. We ordered takeout before heading back to LA. I got the chicken sando mild with fries and my best friend got the chicken sando mild+. The chicken sando is definitely one of the juiciest I've had, but something about the seasoning was different to me. Their seasoning is not your normal typical Nashville hot chicken you'd expect. Also, their fries are really good even though I don't like crinkle cut. Think Shake Shack but 10x better.

The wait times are pretty insane so I highly recommend ordering online. Even ordering online for a weekend evening the wait was 45 minutes!! Boyfie got the mild chicken sando and I got the training wheels tender sandwich. The tenders are pretty big and juicy!! Crispy as well. Their spice levels tend to be spicier than what you expect so if you don't handle spice well, go down a level. We ordered 1 slaw and 1 fries in our combo but both orders got fries. Came by on a Sunday night and there was no wait for placing an order. Ordered the classic sandwich made using a chicken thigh with medium plus spice and got my food within 15 minutes. Everything was hot and fresh, which was a pleasant surprise given either the chicken or the fries had been cold in the past. Hubby and I deliberately hunted this place down before a Marina concert in Oakland because it was something he had found online and wanted to try. I love a good hot chicken sandwich, but as we were riding BART up to Oakland, I was not feeling my best. I was praying that they would have something a bit more tame for me this evening because of how I felt and was relieved to know that they were serving chicken étouffée. It was a cold night and with me feeling less than my best, this was the meal I didn't know I needed. When you walk up to the place, you know you've arrived because the line is just unreal. We got up to the front and ordered in front of a folding table. It wasn't a go-inside-and-settle-in kind of place. We had to scout for a seat outside and share a picnic table with other people since there weren't a whole lot of seats, but a whole lot of people. The place was really popular - freight trucks were double-parked right in front as the drivers stopped in to order their food. Most people took their food to-go, but we had nowhere else to go, so we ate there. Food didn't take long to be ready, and when I got my meal, I was excited. It was exactly what I envisioned, and brought the exact comfort I needed from a meal at the time. I was bummed to not try their famous hot chicken, but that stewy flavory goodness of the chicken stew and rice was on point. Fresh, cozy, and comforting, it was the warm hug in my belly that I desperately needed. I hope to return one day when I feel well enough to set my stomach on fire with a hot chicken sandwich, but I was very satisfied with the warm, cozy chicken hug on this day.

They have different levels for spice (mild, mild plus, medium, medium plus, etc). I was nervous about medium and opted for mild plus. Mild plus had a good kick and was genuinely between a mild and medium. I read some comments about the mac n cheese potentially lacking flavor. The mac n cheese was creamy, but the only flavor i tasted was the red pepper that was inside. Who doenst love fries with their sandwich?? But the fries were disappointing. Even though they looked crispy, the fries were hollow inside. They have a few tables outside for seating, but the inside is closed for dining. Would come back for their chicken sandwiches/tenders the next time im in the area.
Simple takeout spot with lots of chicken-y goodness. There's street parking nearby. My order was placed online and I got a text after my order was ready. I ordered the sando and fries combo and enjoyed them at the picnic tables nearby. 5/5 Chicken sandwich I'm no fried chicken connoisseur, but I really enjoyed this sandwich. My mild fried chicken sandwich was crispy and savory with a hint of sweetness. The coleslaw was a creamy tangy addition that paired well with the sandwich. Fast service and really yummy! Read their spice level descriptions - I got the "mild plus" and it was perfect for me. Mostly to go but they do have some small outdoor tables to sit and eat at. Street parking was easy and meters are free after 6pm. read more

The chicken sandos here ar eno joke! They are generous with the piece of chicken and it is fried to a desirable crisp. We wolfed it down quite quickly and it is a satisfying burger. Service is quite speedy here and the food is top tier! read more

The week started out bad and was getting worse. I needed to foodicate, and a World Famous Hotboy usually did the trick. It's been a minute since I've been by admittedly. I only save my visits for when I want or need a special treat. Approaching the ordering table, I see the menu's changed. So I needed a bit to absorb the new graphics. I was surprised when I looked up, and the order taker had an unhidden frown because I was not immediately ready to order...even though there was no line behind me. I settled for the safe classic: #1 The Sando Meal. I also asked for it to be cut in half. The order taker said ok. When the order came, I checked to make sure it was also halved; it wasn't. The order taker saw me checking and realized that he forgot to submit my request and took it back to be cut. But then I also thought I noticed something on the box, which dumbfounded me. I closed back the top and confirmed it...Someone had written "chinisse" on top!! I was stunned. Like seriously?? Right here in Oakland?? (Pic below.) Racially identifying me here in a metropolis of indiscriminating diversity?? Thanks, Hotboys, for making my week go from worse to worst. C'mon management team. What kind of training are you giving your staff? Are you even training them? You got to be better...I'm giving you one star to hopefully get your attention. read more
I don't know how I haven't reviewed Hot Boys yet. They're by far my favorite chicken sandwich restaurant ever since I first tried them years ago. Nothing comes close to it by a long shot. I always stop by whenever I'm in close proximity. Vibe is cool and fast casual. Unique rap and hip hop on the speakers, chill staff, and good amount of tables outside. Because of the limited menu, people come and go efficiently. You can order there or order ahead on Toast, DoorDash, and a few other platforms. Same price throughout. About 15 mins from the time of ordering to when it's ready. Chicken sando medium+ or medium level is a perfect spice level. I default to the fries for my combo order, but the slaw is also a great choice. For less than $20, you got a very satisfying lunch on your hands. Perfectly cooked juicy chicken, flavorful crisp batter, soft & saucy buns. Great sauce too. When I went yesterday, I also had a limited seasonal Pineapple Fresca which was very refreshing. Would recommend to wash down your food. Overall, 5/5 no notes, best fried chicken sando in the Bay. Hands down, ass up, no pause. Lifelong fan. read more
Yummy! I wish I lived closer so I could come here more often. When I went a couple months ago, there wasn't any indoor seating. You order at the front and then wait until they call your name. I heard about Hotboys from a YouTube foodie Latryguy and the food looked so good I had to try. I got the #1 combo Chicken Sando with fries and ut was amazing! The tender fried chicken was in between and soft bread with coleslaw, pickles and their special sauce. The crinkle cut fries were also well seasoned. I also got their refreshing watermelon drink. The gentleman working there was friendly and there was ample street parking. I'll definitely be back:) read more

I stumbled upon the World Famous Hotboys as I was looking for parking on a Sunday afternoon in DTO. Metered street parking only. Walk up window to order only. No dine in at all! Though they do have metal tables outside for customers to use and sit at. This place is primarily takeout only. 1/2 order of Chikin N Waffles: A breaded chicken tender (A hint of spice level). My wife and I usually don't care for chicken tender because of the breast meat can be dry. But, one bite into theirs and oh man, we didn't even finish chewing that bite. It was so amazingly good!!! World Famous even! They brine their chicken and it comes out very tender and juicy. You really don't need any sauce. It was THAT good! Though, in saying that, they do have this sauce, the guy kept referring to it as the "money sauce". It was an amped-up version of remoulade sauce. It was very good! The waffle was a sweetened corn meal mixture. I wish it was had a crunchiness, which it didn't but it was still good and delicious. I highly recommend this place. They have other locations nationwide. Come check them out. read more
After trying another one of their locations, I was worried since it was nothing like Oaklands (even though it was still tasty). The Oakland location has remained pretty consistent since their opening and is the best! The spice levels are actually spicy here and the size and quality remain. They no longer have the hot hot in a sandwich but you can still get it in a tender challenge -- it may have gone down in heat along with the other levels or I may have gotten tougher. Regardless, the chicken sandwiches are sooooo good. Service is at an outside counter with a few tables outside for seating too. Parking is limited to surrounding street parking that is busy most of the time. read more

I've been here multiple times for lunch, but it's my first time reviewing this place. I've ordered online the sando combo with medium spicy, and fries. they will send you an email confirmation. It is about a 15-20 minute wait depending on how crowded it is. There are a few tables to eat outside of World Famous Hotboys. They will call you by your name or the number on the confirmation email. I always do takeout and they package it very nicely. They also provide 1 sauce. The sandwich itself is a decent size and pretty filling, but my spice tolerance is pretty high, so I might go even spicer next time. The cole slaw and pickles are pretty good too. If you don't want to order online, you can also order in person as well. read more

This is my go to place for dinner whenever I catch a show at the Fox theater. It's also my favorite hot chicken sandwich place in the world and also my favorite place in Oakland. Me and my girlfriend went to World famous hot boys about two weeks ago. This is a little bit late The staff here is really friendly. The food came out in about 15 to 20 minutes. Just depends on how busy and how many people are in line ordering food. We ordered two chicken sandals. I ordered the mild plus I had a little bit of tan and honey sauce. Definitely was a little bit hot, but I could definitely went up a little hotter. My girlfriend ordered non-spicy The ambience is a nice outdoor setting in downtown Oakland. There's a veggie sando on the menu made from soy! If you want it vegan get it with no slaw or sauce cause they're made with mayo👍🏾

It's permit parking only. That lot is quick to tow so I wouldn't recommend!
What's the difference between sandos and guap sandwiches?
Sandos have slaw, pickles, and homemade sauce. El Guapo has cheese sauce and pickles.
Are the non spicy options still tasty?
Yes!! Most definitely!! I do not like spicy either so I order non spicy also. Tastes so good! Enjoy!
