My daughters and I have read the books and were so excited to see the things we read so many times come to life. My husband who had no idea what any of this was about really enjoyed it too. After the tour we went on our own to the cemetery to pay our respects and finally to the cottonwood trees Pa had planted and still exist on the original homestead. I highly recommend seeing the trees as well... what a beautiful place!

I can't say that I'm a huge Laura Ingalls Wilder fan, either of the books or of the television…read moreseries, but I was interested in seeing this interesting tidbit of history that is located quite simply in the middle of nowhere. My stop here was completely fortuitous and was unplanned. Thankfully, I arrived just before the last tour of the day! It was the sign on US Highway 14 pointing the way caught my eye. As I mentioned, Laura Ingalls Wilder is mostly known for the series of childrens books that were turned into a television series in the 1970s and 1980s, "Little House on the Prairie" that starred Melissa Gilbert as Laura and Michael Landon as her father. They spent a significant amount of time here in De Smet and these are the original structures, which have either been restored or moved to the site from their initial locations. I was able to join a half-tour with a helpful and excited docent who does have a script but also has a good depth of knowledge about Wilder and her history. It was quite interesting and I learned a lot about life on the South Dakota prairie in the 1880s. It was not a pleasant time to be here but now that it's 2022, it's sure better! There is a second bridge just upriver - the Chamberlain Bridge carries Interstate 90 (Business) over the river. Apparently, every state along the Missouri River has its Lewis and Clark Bridge. Construction on the bridge began in 1967 and cost $8 million. It was dedicated on July 7, 1974, and was opened to traffic in August. It has a 3500 causeway and the bridge itself is 2031 feet. While it does a fine job of transporting vehicles over the river, it has no decorative features. A total gem of a city campground for a very nice price. Try for site #15 - you're not going to get…read morea sewer connection, but the lake view is totally worth it! Site #26 is also pretty nice, and is a pull thru site with full hook-ups. Showers and restrooms are pretty darn clean for a city run campground. Dog friendly, and there are plenty of trails to walk your furry pal on. No cable, but Mitchell does get 3 local channels via antenna, and it's so pretty here you're not going to watch much tv anyway. WARNING (and why this review is only 4 stars): If you're looking to stay here to enjoy the lake, forget it. The lake is pretty gross and full of blue-green algae, so DON'T plan on swimming. Or leting your kids swim. Or letting your dog anywhere near it. If your only interested in the view, the trees, and a nice quiet place to chill out, it's still worth it, IMHO.

My family rolled in after 9:00 p.m. on Saturday night after the 4th of July, praying for a site to…read morebe open. There was a list available to see which sites were reserved, though it was a tad confusing because it wasn't in what we thought was a logical order. But we found a site without any neighbors and got set up rather quickly. If I remember right we paid about $30 for our electric post site. The campground was pretty quiet despite being just off the business loop and on the lake during a holiday weekend. The next morning we had to pack up right away, but not before my daughter enjoyed a hot shower in "the cleanest campground shower ever" (she's 14, so picky) and we got ready for the day in the *very* clean bathroom. This was very much appreciated after two weeks camping on BLM land with only a pit toilet available! We spoke briefly with the owner who told us she's managed it for the city for just a couple years and is still working on upgrades, but I thought the bathrooms were great as is. We were very satisfied, and if we could have stayed longer we would have made use of the lake and playground.

We stopped here during our cross-country road trip, and it made for a fun, quick roadside…read moreattraction. The building is famous for being covered inside and out with murals made entirely from ears of corn and other grains, and the design is changed every year. This year's display was a bit underwhelming compared to what we expected, as there were several areas where the underlying plywood was still visible. Inside, however, there are photographs of previous years' designs, which gave us a greater appreciation for the creativity and craftsmanship that goes into creating the murals each year. Overall, it's a unique stop that doesn't take much time to visit and is worth checking out if you're passing through the area.

He earned his law degree from the University of Minnesota in 1904 and returned to Miller to practice law. In 1912, Bushfield married Vera Cahalan, a fellow Miller native." "The Bushfields were community leaders in Miller and both served on many boards. Harlan also served as Hand County State's Attorney and as state chairman of the South Dakota Republican Party." "Harlan was elected South Dakota Governor in 1938. He led the state through the beginning of World War II. He reduced state spending, cut sales and property taxes, and lobbied to end the state income tax. He promoted regional plans for Missouri River development, which led to the Pick-Sloan plan for dam construction." "In 1942, Harlan was elected to the U.S. Senate. He suffered a stroke and died in 1948 before the end of his term. Vera was appointed to her husband's seat, making her the second woman to represent South Dakota in Congress."
