I was staying in Quinault Valley and was finishing up my week exploring Olympic National Park. I did a few hikes earlier in the day and went for a walk around Lake Quinault. I came across a sign that pointed to a trail that leads to a giant Sitka spruce tree. I had some time to spare and enjoyed the short walk to it. A couple years ago, I spent some time in Redwoods National Park and got to see some of the tallest trees in the world. Quinault Valley is also home to some very tall trees because of the average rainfall that this region gets. Lake Quinault is nicknamed the "Valley of the Rain Forest Giants" and this Big Spruce Tree is one of them. The sign in front of the spruce tree boasts that this is the largest spruce tree in the world. It stands 191 feet tall and measures more than 55 feet in circumference. It is quite a sight to see in person. If you are in this area and have some time, take 30 minutes and check this tree out. It is over a thousand years old. We headed to Olympic National Park, on the way there, a planned detour to see the World's Largest Spruce Tree was on our list. Mapped it out and got to the area pretty easily. There's not much of a marker so I actually drove passed it and had to U-turn it around and head back, that's when we saw the sign. We parked across the street from the trailhead and the walk is like 5 mins, walk on the trail until you see the bridge and there it is! It's pretty spectacular to see such a large tree, geez...the girth on this one!! Came at a good time, not too many people there in the mid-morning, got our photos and spent about 30 or so mins there. Hit the Honey-Bucket before we hit the road again, so there are lovely accommodations there. Great detour to check out, worth it in my book! read more

Great place for all ages. Muddy but glad we visited with old tennis shoes. Little to no incline. Store across the street has post cards and memorabilia. Cool looking bridge and even seen some ducks. Clean location. Sign located on side of street the trail starts. We went on a sunny day and was stunning. read more

Worth a stop to see the world's largest spruce tree. You do just want to go up and do a tree hug. Over a thousand years old.

We flew into Seattle and flew back from San Fran Ca drove down the coast and some side trips inland. We didn't do as much research for the trip .. we saw more and did more during this trip. It was full of what i call HAPPY ACCIDENTS .. finding this huge tree was one of those accidents. It's so big pictures can't do it justice .. we were lucky to be at a time when we had it to ourselves and it was peaceful. We took some pics with us in it to give domination ... as you couldn't tell by the pics how huge this is until you see how tiny we look. read more

Fun little detour heading out from Kalaloch! Follow the sign off 101 and head down the road a little less than 4 miles until you see a small brown sign to the left. Park directly in the lot across from the sign and take a short, easy trail to the tree! The spruce is HUGE and you can really see how gigantic it is when you look at it from afar. read more

This IS as good as it gets! This magnificent tree is the largest Sitka Spruce and is huge both in girth and in height. It is a short drive from 101 in the little community of Quinault. The atmospheric and geologic conditions are just right to have made this phenominal tree. sitka Spruce need the maritine climate to grow. Oddly enough, this spot 35 miles from the ocean receives enough of the seaside moisure to satisfy this tree. It is in the Quinalt Rainforest and i dland enough to protect it from the maritine storms. It is a beautiful spot with easy access. Definitely worth the side trip if you are on your way to other destinations along Rte 101. read more

How can you give the world's largest Sitka spruce anything LESS than five stars?? I mean, it's the biggest, it's not hard to find, and access is free, after you endure the endless drive to the rainforest side of the Olympic peninsula. It was a perfect sunny day yesterday, much more what you would expect in September than in early January, and the stroll to the tree was a little muddy but nothing treacherous. Especially in the winter, you will get much better photos in the Pacific Northwest if you use a blue filter on your camera (if you can), because our sunlight is so puny and weak. Even if you just take photos with your phone, though, you will be very impressed by this grand old tree. Don't be shy about sneaking around to the north side and talking to the spruce and giving it a pat or two (it's much too big to hug properly). If that's superstitious or silly, nobody will know you did it, and if it's not, well, that poor old tree must get tired of posing for all those pictures and being climbed all over by people who think it's a THING instead of a living, breathing BEING. Wow, the tree (1,000 years old?!?) is pretty impressive. Just take a deep breath near the tree and it smells like Christmas. I have never seen a tree with such a large trunk. Take a picture while on the trunk and you will definitely feel small :) If you are in the Lake Quinault area, just take the South Shore area and follow the signs to the tree. There is a parking lot off the street, and the tree is less than 10 minutes away. P.S. We did the drive around the entire loop, and it took about an hour. I would think twice about driving all the way around if you have a small car or a camper: most of the way, it's gravel and bumpy roads. read more

I've been here many times, it never gets old..it's fun to come and pose in front of the tree.

I think when you're driving up 101 there is a sign that tells you that the Largest Spruce Tree is coming up on the right. Then you drive down S. Shore Rd for a short distance until you reach Quinault. What one may find puzzling is that there aren't any signs letting you know that you're getting close to the big spruce then you drive through downtown Quinault past the post office and then you see a small probably 14 x 14 sign that says "World's Largest Spruce Tree .3 mi" Don't blink or you'll miss it. But there is a moderately large dirt lot directly across from the trail that leads to the spruce so look for that. Or if you turn right as you walk away from the post office and walk a little distance you'll find the trail start. The trail is not paved so be aware of that and it can be muddy and puddle-y. Toward the end of the trail you cross a mini bridge with super clean looking water on either side and straight ahead you see the large spruce. It's cool to see and I'm glad the trail leading to it is no super long. The spruce is 58 ft 11in. in circumference, 1000 years old, and 191 ft tall. With that said, sadly I wasn't impressed by this oddity of nature. I love that it's been around so long, but maybe I was expecting it to be so big that I'd crap myself and have trouble getting back to my car. It is big, don't get me wrong but I found the redwoods in Muir Woods so much more interesting. But I won't compare, it's nice to have this little slice tucked securely away in the woods of Quinault, Washington. read more

Awesomely huge tree (Washington's 3rd largest!). Definitely worth the quick 5-minute walk down a nice trail to see this behemoth.

I'd have to say I did enjoy the short 0.3 mile walk to see the World's largest spruce tree. Even in the cold weather with rain pouring down on us (we went just yesterday) it was nice to see the trail and the huge tree. Unfortunately since it was cold this is the only trail we went on in Quinault before we left. read more

Its a darn "Big Tree" and it got a super thick base. Worth a Look.

The largest spruce tree was right next to the cabin I was staying at. It was definitely worth a picture and people still ask questions when they see my tourist photos from the trip I took 6 months ago. The surrounding area is also picturesque since it has a mountain view from afar. Oh and it's free, can't go wrong with that! read more

Pretty amazing to see just be careful because the wooden platform is rotting and falling apart. It's slick even if it's not actually raining outside. It has cracked and missing boards that people walk on. Other than the safety issues it's truly inspiring to stand next to such an amazing tree. I've lived on the peninsula now for 4 years and I'm still in awe by what it has to offer. read more

It's really *really* big. There's safe places to stand for pictures, but there's a more fun place to stand if you have good grippy shoes, long legs, and some strong hands. Spent a couple days on Lake Quinault, made some of the hikes. 10/10 would recommend. read more

AMAZING...and for those not from Washington...the Forests in the area are just magnificent.

Beautiful short hike that is a less than a 10 minutes walk from the main road. All gravel trail that is well maintained. No pets or bikes are allowed which is unfortunate, but necessary. Once your at the tree there are no restrictions on how close you can get. You can even touch the tree and experience it's true beauty. read more

This review is for the whole rain forest. My family loved visiting here. The park employees really did a good job with making the park easily accessible for kids of all sizes. The wildlife and fauna were mind boggling. I wish we could have stayed longer. read more
