The Campbell County Rockpile Museum in Gillette, Wyoming opened its doors to the public on July 21, 1974. Ralph A. Kintz was the driving force behind the establishment of the museum, purchasing the land where the famous rockpile sits and then donating this property to the county in 1970. The Rockpile has been a landmark in Gillette for many years. The first four settlers in Gillette centered their claims on this site. Legend has it that when travelers came from the west the Rockpile would let them know when they had arrived in Gillette. The Rockpile also was not far from the railhead of the Burlington & Missouri Railroad which arrived in Gillette in 1891. Ever since this time, the famous pile of rocks has been known by local citizens as the Rockpile.

Secondly, its free! Clean rest rooms and lots of historic information about Casper and the local areas. The staff are very helpful and knowledgeable about all the local history. You'll learn about the migrants on the Oregon Trail, (yes the video game is based on a true story) Farmers going to Oregon, Gold miners going to Sacramento and San Fran, (the original 49ers) and the Mormoms going through to SLC. There are interesting exhibits, videos and a large auditorium show of life on the trail, which is really rather informative. The museum covers trails before the migrants, settlers moving across US and the progress of the Pony Express, Telegraph and Railroads. The museum has a few neat simulators for kids such as riding a prairie cart through the river. Sitting in a Wells Fargo stage coach and even experience how it was to pull a 150lb hand cart through the 1000 miles of wilderness. Definitely worth your time, can be done in 1 hour, most likely take 2.

A lot of times the small time museums are a little kitschy, but this is not one of those. They actually have some authentic items from the past and it was very impressive. It's actually much larger than it looks with several buildings out behind the facility, including an old store as well as a one room schoolhouse. They even have a sheepherders rebuilt wagon that was really impressive to see. It is free to visit, but they do accept donations. I would definitely take the time to stop in here, perhaps on your way to Rapid City to stretch your legs.

There are multiple pages of old Lusk newspaper on display, as well as a few hundred photographs, documenting various parts of the town's history. It even had a 12-14 foot section of Lusk's first water pipe, which was made of wood! There were also a number of written descriptions from early settlers, describing local events, the stage coach run, etc. Plan to spend a few hours here, it is well worth your time. There is no entry fee, only donations.

A huge bonus is that it didn't smell like a typical museum, which I definitely appreciated. Very reasonable entrance fee, but free for blue star families such as mine. It was super kid friendly and run by a lovely older couple who took the time to chat and tell us about some of the exhibits. It has some great OLD artifacts that are hundreds of years old, and really shows the early life in the United States. He spent 18 months here in the jail (torn down in 1968) for Horse Theft. Across the street in the Crook Co Courthouse is the furniture from his trail in the museum in the basement. This was Mommy & Daddy's 50th Anniversary Trip!!!
