They offer services and clinics in: health promotion & disease prevention, family planning, cervical smears, child health and minor surgery, stop smoking and counselling. The doctors appear knowledgeable, friendly and I've never felt like I am wasting their time. They take me seriously and I feel they are listening to me. When I need an appointment they generally have one when I need, I have the option to go to either the Yatton or Congresbury which I think is great, it gives me more options for time of appointment. If I want to see a certain doctor they always try to accommodate and if I need one urgently I have never been turned away. Both nurses and doctors are helpful, good with children and if you are looking to move to the area the surgery shouldn't be a concern. If the appointments are running late they put a note out so when you arrive you realise there is a wait and give you the option to reschedule your appointment (after all it's a public service not a for profit, customer service orientated organisation like a supermarket). The only downside is the parking, the car park is tiny and on-street parking can be restrictive meaning you have a short walk to the building. Not to bad for me normally but if you're elderly or very ill it may cause you problems.

Anyway, like I said, taking time out of your day to be poked and prodded is never fun but, for a doctors surgery, the Family Practice is a really great place to go and very relaxing. The Grade II listed building is the grandest surgery I've ever seen and its location in the residential area of Cotham means it's easy to find a parking space. The gardens are full of beautiful plants and lavender lines the walkway leading to the main entrance - whether or not it was a conscious decisions to have the calming smell of a herb to relax patients I don't know, but it certainly helps! Inside the main waiting room is at the front while the nurses' waiting room (where you would go for routine appointments or blood test etc) is round to the left. You can either sign in at the main reception or using the computer program at the front desk but be sure to note who your appointment is with as you need to make sure you're in the right waiting room. All the staff I have encountered has been friendly and professional and I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who lives in the area.

Now ive found the cosmetic clinic i wont be going anywhere else definately my favourite Cinic with a pleasant room which is spotlessly clean and relaxing to be in and friendly staff. Terrible. They have…read morea lovely new facility, but I've lived in Portishead for 2.5 years. That's enough time to give them a chance to prove that someone just had a bad day or wasn't trained up yet. I've never seen such poor service or treatment of patients. I'd say at least half the time when you call to make an appointment, after being on hold for endless minutes with a very surly recorded woman saying, "You are held in a queue, and will be AHNSered SHAWTLY", someone will answer and then "accidentally" hang up on you." This just happened to me for the umpteenth time and when I called back and explained what happened, the grumpy, severe sounding woman said, "Oh. Well, what can I help you with?" So, don't expect politeness or a warm, friendly manner. The reception staff is horrendous. They've lost my x-rays, my heart EKG results, and misfiled other paperwork which I had to follow-up on until someone with a brain managed to track it down. The EKG was filed UNDER THE WRONG PATIENT. They tell me I only need to have a "pill check" once a year for my birth control pills, and yet every time I try to refill the prescription I get told I cannot until I come back in and speak to a nurse about the pill. I'm 35. I don't have time to come into the clinic every 3 months to tell them nothing has changed on the pill I've been taking since the dawn of time. They are careless, impolite, brisk and abrupt. If you can get in to see the other NHS surgery in town, or even private, I would strongly recommend. Were I staying in Portishead any longer, I'd get private healthcare as the other surgery hasn't been accepting patients every time I've looked. However, since I'm happily moving out of the area, I can only hope that the surgery I deal with next is as pleasant as the ones I've dealt with in other areas. Honestly, stay away if you can.
