It was raining outside and I was looking for a place to duck in. I tried to look in the window to see what seating was like when I noticed that they had some souvenirs for purchase... including some items with the Magic Roundabout on it. I went in and there was quite a bit going on. It looked like there were a couple groups in and there were lots of people wandering the collection. I didn't get the chance to go upstairs, but it looks like they have quite a large collection and they have interlibrary loan (I overheard a librarian talking with a patron). There are computers around the wall of the library so people can use the internet or look up books. To the left of the entrance, there is the Tourist Information desk including a large collection of brochures and magazines for tourists for each part of the UK. There was a local section as well. Of course they had the selection of souvenirs that I saw from the outside... Swindon Monopoly, t-shirts, key chains, and coffee mugs with the Magic Roundabout, post cards, and various items for children. It is a lovely facility and seems to be well used by the public!

There are a few ways to see the Weir, one of which involves catching a boat to the apex of the horseshoe, another is along the embankment having navigated your way down the steps from Pulteney Bridge, and the other overlooking the Weir from the street above. All are different and wonderful in their own way. Speaking of boats, you can catch a boat from the embankment all the way to Bathampton Mill along the River Avon (about £8 return for adults), and if you don't fancy that, there's a couple of nearby pubs and restaurants. The Weir really is one of Bath's special places, except for when it's doing its job of protecting the city from floods. This is when the water is so high, the Weir itself is almost hidden. It becomes a muddy torrent of fast-flowing water and large, heavy debris. Here's hoping you get a nice day!

Cross it in a cab, walk across it as a pedestrian, see it at day, see it at night, see it from both sides, see it by boat trip. And, unlike Tower Bridge, you've got that great water-wooshing effect of the stair-step waterfalls. I only wish there was a small visitor center/view from the inside open to the public!

West Kennet Long Barrow is a burial chamber, situated in a field about a mile south of Silbury Hill…read moreand a couple of miles south of Avebury Stone Circle and village. As well as being one of the largest and oldest such monuments in the UK, it is also one of the most accessible*, as you can walk right into the burial chambers. The barrow itself is a Neolithic chambered tomb, comprising a long mound of about 100m, part of which has a series of stone lined and roofed chambers, in which nearly 50 people being buried here before the chambers were blocked. It was built in around 3650 BC, making it one of the oldest man-made structures in Britain. The stones which form the walls and ceiling weigh several tons each, making the achievement of building it over 5,500 years ago even more impressive. Practicalities: there is a small lay-by for parking on the A4 road just west of West Kennet, but before you get to Silbury Hill. Alternatively, you could park at Silbury Hill, where there is a better car park, and walk along the A4, although it is a very busy road and not the most pleasant of walks. The plus side is that you get to see more of Silbury Hill. Once at the lay-by, it is a 700m walk (and an ascent of around 50m) along an unmade footpath (and via a "kissing gate") and then alongside a field. In wet weather, it can get very wet and muddy, so proper walking footwear is absolutely essential. bring a torch or phone with light with you, as the burial chambers are pretty dark, and you need to stoop at various places because of low ceilings. It is part of the Avebury World Heritage Site, and in the care of English Heritage and the National Trust. * Accessible in this sense compares with those monuments which are unexcavated and/or more remote. See above for access information: it is not accessible for those using wheelchairs, and involves a 1.5m return walk, up a hill and along unsurfaced footpaths.

If you go to Stonehenge, Avebury Circle or Silbury Hill you should stop in at this amazing burial…read moremound. It's small but that's part of the attraction. At Stonehenge, Avebury and Silbury everything is seen from a distance like you're walking through a museum where everything is behind glass. Here you can go into the mound and explore around it all you like. There are no walkways, fences or signs that start, "Please don't...... ". When you walk to the back of the interior you lose your scene of time and feel it could just as easily be 1010 BC outside in the sunlight as 2010. The stones guarding the entrance are in many ways more remarkable than those at the better know places. First of all the people who erected them seem to have just left for supper. They are arranged in a perfect order as if stating: "let those inside rest in peace". But what I found most amazing about West Kennet Long Barrow was that the basic layout of the place, the location on the hill, the grandeur of it all (if on a small scale) are all reminiscent of our modern places of worship and remembrance. The people who built the mound must have revered those who were once buried here and the template they created through intuition and inspiration have stayed with us all these years.

Rowe's news market and post office is quite a large shop and is very convenient as they are open…read morefrom really early in the morning until 10 o'clock at night pretty much every day (maybe not so late on Sundays). The post office is open until 5:30 and there is nearly always a huge queue. The staff are nearly always very helpful though and they do get a lot of stick from people moaning about the queues - but its not their fault! The staff in the shop itself are really nice especially Chris, everyone loves her she has been there for a long time and is always happy and smiling

Theres a large range of magazine and newspapers (including foreign newspapers), hot and cold food and drinks, snacks, cigarettes and alcohol, lotto as well as many grocery items. They've just had a refit so even if you've been in there before, theres many new items that were not there before. Theres also a Post Office, photocopying service and photobooth. According to the Manager there maybe the facillity to do driving licences instantly in the Post Office in the near future. The pricing is very competative and they have many special offers, especially on seasonal goods, that are equal and in some cases better than places like Sainsburys.
