I'm literally on the radio milwaukee right now, parked out front and starting this review on the…read moreWiFi... was in town for a couple weeks between the holidays and stumbled upon the morning show after thirteen hour shifts at the steam plant. all through the morning I enjoyed listening to a nice mixxy mix of styles and artists from the tragically hipster to forced urban anger, artfully crafted melodies to pretense with poetry. my favorites were the delightfully odd bits of musicality that pop up around 7:30 in the morning - some sort of bacon or something... public radio: it's public it's radio; it's radio for, by, and to the public as only Milwaukee can do it - it's rare to find a medium so well done.

We had a listening party at the radio station and we had the opportunity to vote on songs that they would play on the radio. It was a wonderful time, and the event was catered. The staff was extremely nice and gave us a tour of the facilities. the radio station just changed their logo and it looks really nice and it's something that's fresh and simplistic.

You will not hear repeats like you do on some many other commercial radio stations. What you will hear are some of the most passionate and knowledgeable DJ's on the airwaves. All air time is divided into three hour blocks and programmed by the DJ's who volunteer their time to bring some of the coolest music ever recorded to their listeners. Blues, Jazz, Funk, R&B, and Americana are just a few of the genres well represented. Check out the programming guide at wmse.org. They have some really good shows. Most of the shows are talk, but there are some good music shows too, mostly showcasing local music. There is a lot of good local music.

The "other" public radio station in Milwaukee…read more I say "other," but honestly, it's just as good as WUWM. When the mood strikes me for more Wisconsin-based broadcasting (such as during the recent midterm elections) I'll turn the dial up a few notches to 90.7. They've got a decent run-through of the nationally syndicated shows (although I think WUWM's got a slightly better spattering) but the real draw here is the Kathleen Dunn Show. This woman is entrancing. Listening to her interview guests is like listening to my school-marm-ey aunt from Green Bay tell a story. The topic might not be particularly engrossing, the dialogue might not always be something particularly interesting, but there's just a certain "je ne sais quoi" that keeps me tuned in. Seriously, the amount of times I've sat in front of my house with the car on to allow Ms. Dunn's segment to finish is embarrassing. There's something about her voice or the way that she interacts with her guests that typifies "Wisconsin" to me, and that makes her an excellent face (well, voice) to represent Wisconsin Public Radio.

Most Ideas Network programs come from the main studios in Madison, but much comes from other sources nation & world wide. (It's not just an outlet for mainly NPR as is the case with much of WUWM.) WPR has an illustrious 100 year history that tracks their development from an experimental broadcast radio station of the Univ. of Wisc. Physics Dept. through Educational & Instructional Radio for in school use and serving rural populations to it's present incarnation as one of the leading Pubic Radio operations in the nation. WMSE)…read more Jazz, Classical, Ragi, Techno, Dhu, Latin, you name it they've probably got somebody playing it sometime. Non-commercial, but they've got some local underwriting, &, of course membership drives, however calling them a Pubic Radio station is pushing it. If you're in to what they're playing, including bringing in a lot of different kinds of local musical talent, you're most likely going to be entertained. Give 'em a listen, but don't expect to be tuned in all day.
