I've been listening for 20+ years. It used to be five stars, but something awful has happened to their lineup in the past couple of years (pandemic related?) and they're putting a lot of top-40 alt-rock crapola into the rotation. Where has the experimental music I'd never heard before gone? And the DJs with encyclopedic knowledge of independent and world music? Please bring them back -- I hope this faltering is temporary. read more

WXYC is one of the best university radio stations I've heard, and probably the most musically diverse station in the Triangle, if not the state. On the air since 1977, they play an incredibly wide range of music, with a special focus on local artists. Every day from 5-9 pm they give away tickets for shows at local venues, which is a great opportunity to explore Chapel Hill's music scene. As far as programming goes, I love the Thursday Night Feature, where the DJ picks a theme and then chooses the songs that fit that theme (e.g., 3 hours of songs about rainbows, or whatever). The only downside to WXYC is that with that much focus on diverse programming and music, there are certain times of day that they just don't play any songs I like. Nine times out of ten I like what I hear, but then again I've also flipped over when they were playing what sounded like 15 straight minutes of windchimes. read more

God, college radio warms my little heart. This radio station is fantastic! The first thing I do when I get to the Triangle is tune in WXYC! For some reason I always think of LCD Soundsystem's "Losing my edge" when I hear WXYC. I've never been a big fan of commercial radio, and am so lucky to have a couple good radio stations where I live. The diversity truly is refreshing day-to-day and even minute-to-minute. WXYC is by far the best radio station in the Triangle. By FAR. And since it is college radio, as everyone knows, probably 75% of the time they are playing new age avant garde weird stuff... I mean, I know ALL college radio plays weird stuff, but I just don't understand WHY. Like, I'm driving in my car, and you think I want to hear drones? I will take either classical or a really crappy classic rock station over that. So, when driving in my car, I always check WXYC first, because sometimes they are playing some awesome music (there really are no other good stations here). Sometimes, they are NOT. Oh and I also LOVE that I can see the playlists online. I guess you can probably do that with any radio station... but they are usually playing stuff on here that I don't know! read more

I first heard about WXYC sometime in the mid 90s -- it was one of the first radio stations to stream on the internet. Now that I live in the area, I'm thrilled to be able to tune in via stream or boombox, if i wanna! As far as area college radio goes, WXYC is probably the most eclectic sounding station in the triangle. From specialized world music shows to local bands playing live, there's a great diversity of choices. Also, I have been listening to the same djs on the air for a long time which is a plus for the ones i like ;0 The station tries to be on the air 24/7 - pretty impressive. So I can tune in at 6am or 12pm, which is something I'm not used to in college radio stations. I do wish there were more djs into hip-hop or funk/dance/soul music but the fact is that the station is free-format and dj's prioritize their favorite genres....I'm just thrilled to have access to consistently excellent shows and setlists. read more

WXYC is a great college radio station. I'm really glad to have found it. Incredibly eclectic collection, but almost everything they play is great, and this can be a good tool for discovering artists, both contemporary and more dated. Sometimes, though, I have to agree with Adrienne--there are occasionally extended sets of new age bullshit. Nevertheless, excepting these periods, I listen to WXYC while driving and I stream it via iTunes when I'm at my desk. read more

I came down from Jersey to Apex NC working on a project and stumbled on this station. Listening all day while working, brought me back old college days and music scene. I was in a hypnotic state of mind, working and feeling what had been lost in my life being a musician in a Alternative based band. I was reminded that there is still interesting music in the world, and it had my mind wander back through all those years and gigs. It kinda got me a little misty eyed. Your station has a great selection of music and college feel. Now that I'm up North, I find myself digging out the old bandmates contacts to try and create some new magic. read more
