Completed in 1934, the courthouse is an impressive 295 feet tall with 22 floors, a height that puts it in the same general league as other Depression-era civil towers but noticeably shorter than Kansas City's flashier private skyscrapers of the era like the Power & Light Building (476 feet) and 909 Walnut (471 feet). You can see the clear Public Works Administration Moderne and Art Deco elements in the facade. It's the stripped-down classicism and geometric ornament with a vertical push that fits right into the skyline. The building was designed primarily by Wight & Wight and consulting architect Edward F. Neild, whose Shreveport Louisiana courthouse inspired then presiding judge Harry S. Truman's vision for the project. Neild was later commissioned to design the Truman Presidential Library, but died before it was completed. Walking around the exterior, you can see why Truman was proud of it. the carved limestone at the base, the rhythmic window grid and the restrained but confident massing all feel like a civic anchor rather than a showpiece. Jackson County itself was formed in 1826 and named for Andrew Jackson, then a US Senator and soon to be President. Even with the courthouse closed for the evening, the plaza and nearby blocks make it an easy stop with parking nearby, a quick walk around the tower, and a chance to take in one of KCMO's most important landmarks before heading out. This site on Main will put you in touch with the NPS Rangers who will have you watch a short film about the 33rd President, his rise to the Presidency, and his rise attempt to normalize after leaving office. After the film you will have the opportunity to head over to Delaware and visit the Noland House (which belonged to his aunt and uncle), which houses a small assortment of Truman artifacts, or you can stroll from Independence Square (5 blocks to the house), along the same streets that President Truman walked before, during, and after his presidency. The house itself is as it was when Bess Truman passed away in the 1980s. Inside you will find a very unassuming life that her husband attempted to keep. He tried his best to not let his role as leader of the free world get to his head. Despite that, the former president was a point of interest for folks passing through Kansas City and Independence, Missouri. During the 30-ish minutes, Ranger led tour, you can't take photos, but you can certainly understand the Trumans did their best to live a peaceful and "normal" life and that's the way they lived the entire time. It's surprising how many generations of Trumans lived in that tiny little home, but they made the most of it. This site adds another touch to the life of the 33rd POTUS, and adds another layer to the exhibits you can see at the Truman Library and Museum down the road.

I suppose they refer to it nowadays as the Truman Courthouse so as to not confuse it with the modern Jackson County Courthouse in Kansas City. The structure does double duty: It is still a working courthouse. The Jackson County Historical Society also occupies space. The Society maintains an archive. If you're just walking around downtown Independence, you can take pictures of the building's exterior and statuary. There are also markers acknowledging westward expansion trails. (e.g. the Oregon, California and Santa Fe Trails.) If you're interested in seeing Harry S. Truman's office, the Brady Courtroom or the Jackson County Art Museum, you have to go the "www.jchs*org/truman-courthouse/" website and make advance reservations.
