However I was very impressed by facilities in the shop etc. Besides a good range of seeds (acres and acres of Thompson and Morgan and others) they also sell a lot of crafty-gifty type goods. You can get your fancy fudge or jars of stuff here. They also have what can only be described as a frozen pick and mix. Freezers, scoops, bags ready for you to pick the portions you wanted. This included various mixes of frozen fruit and veg (including winter root mix, or roasted veg mix) and also frozen pastries and pies, often of the posher brie and cranberry etc types. There's a café, with modern art on the walls and what looks like a nice menu and nice, newly built loos. Card racks which we had to tear ourselves away from (lots of funnies and no time to read), and a wooden version of a stone circle outside (see picture). Well worth a visit, even if you aren't into plants. Shopoholics will enjoy it anyway.

It was nice to walk round and just look, I wasn't harassed by the staff as I did, and there was a hut to go in if you needed any help. The prices were fair and seemed competitive for what they had!

They could do with a gift shop though. It is a bit of a make shift garden centre with no real indoor area - it is mainly large open areas covered in a marquee like structure. The path ways need to be evened out for accessibility problems. The ground is very uneven which was not helpful with my company... We are in Poppy's which is the cafe and restaurant. The food is very reasonable but the service is poor. There are a lot of young assistants that need some customer service training. We had to return a glass as it had a chip in it, we also had to ask again for our order. The waitress was understandably busy but very rude and unhelpful. Food was really nice but service did let it down!!

Hot on the heels of…read moreputting an offer in on a local property (what a beautiful area this is) the in-laws and I decamped to Hillier Garden Centre for tea, cakes and purchased a load of plants to upgrade our respective gardens. Nicely laid out, there's a good balance between mid range and the more expensive statement plants, statues, herbs, summer houses, the ubiquitous smart garden centre foodie treats (ideal for presents) and a smart open plan eatery with seating spilling outside, adjacent to a series of summer houses. Take inspiration from the £900 wisteria enveloping an unusual wooden pagoda and enjoy the very tasty food. One thing is for sure, if I move locally I'll be conducting my business meetings here. As an added bonus the staff were very friendly and helpful too
