It is a wonderful farm park just outside the city, in the pretty greenbelt area between Cardiff and Newport. It has come on leaps and bounds in recent years to offer visitors better facilities. There's now a huge indoor heated play barn, a children's outdoor play area, a big sand pit, picnic tables, pony rides, and hands-on sessions when visitors can touch and hold some of the animals. From donkeys and ducks, to goats and geese, there's plenty of variety of animals - including a few less common ones such as the llama. And if you walk to the furthest area of the farm park you reach a lovely, peaceful pond area which is a good spot for wildlife-watching or sitting down for a picnic. I love animals, and I love farm parks - and I wish it wasn't considered odd to enjoy visiting them without children in tow!

Anyways it was spring time so there were lots of lambs and baby goats around to pet and feed if your lucky. Seeing a grown man coo over animals was defiantly worth the £4.50 entry fee! We took a picnic plus and had enjoyed lunch on a picnic bench in the sun, but there's a nice cafe too for afternoon tea too or some lunch. Would be fantastic place for kids as there can go on pony rides and digger rides and play on the park area. We sadly weren't aloud!

Like Bison? Strange but true - the Bison Centre near Warminster has fields with live bison in. Yep…read more- the big hairy things you'd normally see roaming the plains of the Wild West. You can also see Elk, Raccoons and Prairie Dogs, if that's what floats your boat! It's actually a very pleasant day out. There's over 30 acres of land, and you follow a completely natural trail, walking around the various fields (it's a good hour or so if you stroll slowly). Not reccomended for the elserly or anyone with mobility problems though. We went on a nice sunny day, although there had been rain and consequently boots or old sturdy shoes would have been a better bet than my sandals!! It's only open in season - April to September, but well worth a ramble on a very different day out. They also have various Theme Days with re-enactments from the American Civil War Society and traditional Native American gatherings. There's a small farm shop where you can buy frozen bison steaks - guaranteed to liven up any BBQ!

The atmosphere is relaxed and peaceful and the abundance of cute greedy animals desperate for you to feed them is nothing short of delightful. Their animals range from goats and sheep to chickens to cows right over to the more unusual llamas and highland cows. Even if you're not into getting close to the animals or feeding them the buckets of food available at the ticket office, just watching them mooch around is still fun and relaxing. The llama took somewhat of a disliking to me (was it something I said?) and stormed at me, looking like it could easily clear the fence and gain its freedom. I wasn't going to hang around to find out. One look at my pathetic retreating hide running off into the distance was enough to reduce its anger to mere disdain, and instead he decided to spit all over me. In some sort of random heroic act, the pig sharing its pen flung itself at the llama as if to take the blow for me, and rather than reflect on the llama soaking I'd been given, I instead watched this pig take one for the team. Right in the eye, no less. From hereonin, I shall name this pig SuperPig. If you do have kids you can pretend are the reason for visiting, there's plenty to keep them occupied. Other than the animals you can feed, there are talks and handling sessions with some of the smaller or baby pets throughout the day. There's also a nice adventure playground and a couple of trampolines to wear them out on too. There's a small gift shop and a place to buy some food, as well as a picnic area if you're sensible enough to bring your own food. I love this place and can't wait to go back when it reopens for the season next year.

There…read moreare several walking and hiking routes within the farm and the Folly Farm Centre is made up of barn style function rooms and accommodation that can be hired out for weddings, corporate events and educational visits. I came here looking for a potential wedding venue and was bowled over by the beauty of this place. From the farm there are views of rolling hills and a nearby lake and on site there are meadows for camping, fields full of pigs and sheep and plenty of wild flowers scattered about the place. It is simply idyllic. With a car park at the bottom of the centre this place would be ideal to hold an event or simply go on one of the popular walks. The function rooms are of varying sizes and hire of the venue comes with the use of chairs, tables and a large industrial kitchen. Although the buildings are relatively new they have been built using traditional stone so they don't stand out for being too modern. The farm is quite easy to find from Bristol and once you're a mile or so away there are several signs to point you in the right direction. Although popular with walkers and nature lovers the farm does not allow dogs of any kind due to the other animals on site.

The set up is based on a nature reserve which offers a series of walks from 20-30 minutes to 2 hours, the nature reserve is open to the public and I'd certainly recommend anyone having a stroll. The site is on top of the hill overlooking the rolling vast green hills that is chew valley and over looks the stunning chew valley lake. Not only is this a wedding venue it's also a conferencing and education centre as well. And offers tutorials for children and adults giving education on wildlife and related topics. Now let's get to business- WEDDINGS!!! So the set up is can have the venue anything from a few hours to a few days, which provides a perfect chance to do something a bit different, we organised our very own DIY festival wedding. We had the venue Friday to Monday. There are minimal staff insight but you rarely see them, unless you need them. And this gives you the freedom to do what you wish with the grounds, obviously within reason, bearing in mind this is a nature reserve! You can chose from 4 rooms for your ceremony, and either use this room for your meals/ reception or as we did hire a marquee. This I have to say made it for us! There is accommodation for 45 people, which is either basic dorms sleeping 2-4 or small apartments with kitchenette and ensuite bathrooms. They also have a camping field which they tell you holds 15 tents but I think we could have got at least another ten in there. There's loads of indoor and outdoor entertaining space,BBQ areas to chilled out sofa areas. Folly Farm is a perfect wedding venue, I am so pleased we chose it and have had nothing but good feedback from people, other than three days is not long enough, I have to say I agree!

In the 20+ acres you have all the reg farm animals to feed. Theres a couple of rides , bouncy castle and toy tractors to skoot around on. All this could be done in drizzly weather with wellys on but if its really bad theres a massive indoor play area. they have a small area for babys and toddlers thats well padded and keeps them entertained for ages. The older kids have lots to climb and the tallest slides i have ever seen. my heart was in my mouth watching the kids come down it , but they thought it was wicked. Also it has paddocks with animals in (such as cows, lamas etc.) which you can feed and indoor barns with pigs and horses in. The grounds are fantastic lots of open space for the children to wonder and explore and also paths that follow through the trees and gardens. There was a separate area with Wendy houses, trampolines and a climbing frame for the smaller children which was in a really nice relaxing area. You can get up close with pigs, rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens in Pet's Corner. There is 66 acres of beautiful gardens and woodland walks, the views across the River Severn and Wales and spectacular ! There's also a cafe and shop. The cafe is really nice I had a caramel latte with a cheese and chutney sandwich came to £5.50 wich Is good value. Plenty of parking available. Overall a fantastic day out which was really enjoyed by all.

The staff here are very friendly and more than happy to help cut your meat to your specification. They are always happy to take a few extra minutes with customers, to explain how best to cook your meat and all meat is locally farmed. The turkey crown I bought at christmas cost £20 for 2.1kilos - not dear and very tasty. They often have offers - buy three packs for a tenner etc, and they also have a large variety of meats from normal chicken and chops, to venison. There is a small deli counter here where you can purchase cheeses and cold meats and I believe their meat is far superior to supermarkets and not too costly.
