YAAM is this Rasta-based oasis in the middle of Berlin. Located right along the river, it's really a very visually unique place. There is art on the walls, and many of the structures are very artistically created. Plus, you can grab a table right on the river, if that's your desire, and there's one available. What they offer here is some great food and some great drink. Plus, there's always a nice selection of music playing in the background. The overall atmosphere is very Rasta and it's just a fun place to visit and hang out. Walking into YAAM you immediately feel removed from the hustle and bustler Berlin. Even though this location is really easy to find, as it is right off of main street, once you go inside, the entire vibes of the area change. Interesting vibes, very different and Berlin. Food was just okay. Couldn't tell it was jerk chicken as the flavors were very mild and didn't remind me of it. So I asked for hot sauce and the guy running the place asked for my plate and added traditional jerk sauce. This made it better and elevated the experience to 3 stars. Decent club, not strict on entry and very laid back on the inside. This place comprises of two rooms and a span of sandbar--dunno what it is with Berlin and beach bars though--with a food stand and plenty of places to sprawl out. The first room has N64 or some type of retro game console across from one of the bars. The adjoining rooms play a different type of music. On the night that I went, it was terrible American 90s and the second room was dancehall, which my British friends loved. Overall this place is not my taste but still a really decent club, easy to get into. read more

I found this joint while walking from mitte to the east side gallery. It's the Youth African Arts Movement. It has graffiti all over it, what I assume are free walls, a beach area right along the canal, a caribbean food shack and a dance hall. We went back for a reggae/hip hop show one of the nights and had a great time. The music was awesome and it all around had a great vibe. I was there in the dead of winter and can only imagine the parties at this place in the summer. read more

Yaam is a super cool event/concert/food/bar/beach location directly across the street from Ostbahnhof. It's really hard to describe what yaam is, because it's a little bit of everything. There are African and Caribbean-style food trucks in the front, but if you walk down to the water and behind the long building, you will find a bar with sand, beach chairs, and umbrellas. Great for hanging out on a lazy weekend, and also offers plenty of free space for the kids if you want to bring your family. Yaam beach bar is a slice of the Caribbean in the middle of Berlin. Sitting just off the Spree in Friedrichshain, it's super easy to get to (it's a 2 minute walk from Ost Bahnhof). It sits at the end of East Side Gallery, and is a great place to stroll along to after eyeing up some graffitti. Kick off your shoes and swap concrete for sand as you step inside its scribbled gates. Tucked behind multicoloured walls, you can lounge on a deckchair, in a hut or swing wildly on a hammock as you enjoy some strong (but tasty) cocktails. It's a Caribbean cave of wonders, and you can wind down to the side of the Spree, which is bejewelled in fairylights, or prop up the bar and enjoy some of the reggae music during the evening. Despite the fact Yaam throws a good party, there is a distinctive family vibe during the day. Its chilled out atmosphere is favoured by the locals, and its grassroots wackiness appeals to tourists. (Bursts through the Berlin Wall like the Kool-Aid Man) Guys. Guys. Y'all have to go here if you ever find yourself in Berlin. I discovered this place while on Sandemans NewEurope Berlin Alternative Tour, and I loved it so much that I decided I wanted to take my dad there that evening for dinner for our last night in the city. We'd had our fill of currywurst, potatoes, and sauerkraut, so I figured that something different would be memorable on our trip. Yaam stands for "Young African Artists Market", so naturally there are a lot of African expats that hang out here, but because the neighborhood has become more gentrified, it's a popular spot among millenials for cheap exotic eats and dancing, as well. When I arrived that afternoon with my tour group, we took a 20 minute break here. During this time, I spent it mostly watching a group of African dancers that had met on the small stage on the beach side of the market, taking pictures of the murals that adorned the outside walls of the central venue, and people watching with an ice-cold Afri-cola. It was just so fun and funky that I asked my tour guide to show us where exactly we were on a map and how late it was open. When I got back to our hotel in Moabit, I easily convinced my dad to come here, so we took the S-Bahn from Bellevue to Ostbanhof and made our way there on foot. We ate stew from one of the African food huts and drank beer at the bar in the back while relaxing on two of the over-sized beach chairs. Sadly, there were no live performances on the stage that night, but there was dancing going on at the bar. I'm really glad we made the trek out here, because it was the perfect way to end our trip! read more

We we're lucky enough to be in Berlin last weekend when it was hot and sunny, so the Yaam bar was a must. Tucked away just off the river,just off the centre of Berlin its well worth a visit. Kind of like a part community centre,part mini festival,it had a really easy going atmosphere,bar staff and locals were all welcoming and friendly. 3 or 4 little sound systems and a club. Really hipster, cool reggae dance club right by the water that was super chill and casual with a lot of people who are ready to dance and groove. Came here on a Thursday night so the usual open dance area wasn't open but locals tell me that usually the open area is one big dance floor with food trucks open all around you. On my night, the inside bar turned into its own little dance floor and everyone, including the bartenders, are grooving and rocking their heads with you. One of the best locations in Berlin- and the last location of subculture in that area. Sitting on the beach, drinking a beer, enjoy good music and calm people around you. The atmosphere is the oases of subculture in the middle of the media-spree-desert around the railway-station ostbahnhof. Beside the beach- bar, there are some really nice events for young musicians and good energetic parties the total year. The beach bar is closed in the winter, but the parties makes the winter in Berlin more colorful :) Fazit: If you visit berlin, go there drink a beer and enjoy the atmosphere of the old berlin, before the tourist inversion was there. read more

This is weather was so great, I had to go to a beach club. We ended up here and I loved Yaam. It really makes you feel like you are on vacation with all the sand and African style food and drinks. Yes there are some people here that are a bit "out" but that is part of the charm, you can be whoever you wanna be here. I also loved that you can go right down to the Spree and sit by the water! The drinks are priced OK, a bit more pricey than what I would have expected but still affordable. The staff is great and they also have some stalls in the beach club, so you can buy African food, some jewelry, and also get all glittered up by one of the stalls. A friend mentioned this to me before I left for Berlin, and I had a hard time believing it. Why would a beach bar, complete with sand, be in the middle of Berlin? I forgot about it until I stumbled into it yesterday on accident. Anyway, what a cool idea! There wasn't much going on, but it was fun to take my shoes off and drink a cocktail. Yaam is everything as mentioned above, a lovely place to chill, a place to relax between gentle people. Great music and events. Just a word of WARNING about the cocktails: If you are not a local you could easily end of with the non-alcoholic tourist Planters Punch for 7 Euro as I did, drink a hundred and you could still safely drive a car. The give away is that they fill a glass to the brim with ice and then walk behind a semi-closed wall and blend the 'cocktail'. 7 Euro for colored water is a bit much, if you care to ask me. Really upset with the way I was treated today. I am a single Harz 4 Mother and live on a tight budget, but decided to bring my son to the Nimmerland kid's party today. I paid 5€ entrance and though I felt guilty spending even more, I indulged on a drink for myself and an ice cream for my son. The entire place is super trashy. It's dirty and not well done. Nothing is decorated with love. Lots of things were half broken. My friends with children were all horrified and complained that the food was bad as well. To make things worse I was not given a pfandmarke for my drink and after I tried to return my glass I was rudely told I would not get my euro back and treated like an idiot. (To add insult to injury, my prosecco was completely flat - can't believe I wasted money on that.) No one at the bar believed that I didn't get a pfandmarke and then I was spoken to in the worst way, completely without any understanding. I have no reason to lie or be untruthful. No one wanted to admit they had made a mistake. Seems the customer is always wrong at Yaam. I will never come to your miserable trashy place ever again. I struggle with an emotional disorder and I have a hard time keeping my emotions under control when I am treated so rudely, so on the way out I pushed a bar stool over out of anger and then the *wonderful* bar staff yelled after me that I am a terrible mother. That was the icing on the cake. No kindness or understanding. I regret wasting my money there when I could have taken my son to a museum or simply the playground (for free!)
