Well it may not be the Wall Street Journal, the Yakima Herald republic is one of those papers that you grow to appreciate the longer that you our way and the longer that you have access to it. It seems like a sort of contradiction in terms, however we came back after being away for about 15 years and all the while we found the Herald online to be an incredible source for Yakima and Central Washington based news. Since physically being back in Yakima, I've also grown to appreciate the type of reporting that these guys do. While it's easy to write them off as just a small town newsletter, the type of reporting they do here is really top-notch. The news team doesn't rely on other sources, but rather really goes out of their way to make sure they are getting stories that affect the area and report on it in an unbiased fashion. I found it very interesting to learn that the Seattle Times actually owns the Yakima Herald, but lets them operate completely independently. Having that sort of freedom is key for an area that operates very differently then the west side of the state. The local sports coverage is excellent and they do a great job of focusing on many of the smaller towns in the area as well. Over the past few years they have brought on a number of new staff members who have brought a renewed focus to local cultural events, culinary opportunities and outdoor activities. This in addition to operating the only Spanish newspaper in the state and publishing a number of magazines throughout the year including ones that highlight different activities in the valley, activities for kids and families, and wedding magazines a couple times per year. Looking into all that they do here gave us all the more reason to make sure we continue to support this paper and continue to stay up on local events. If you want the Wall Street Journal or the New York Times, you should definitely get them to stay up on national and global events, but for making sure you know what's going on in your hometown in the valley, there's no better place to look than the Herald! read more

There are several revenue options for local newspapers, but obituaries shouldn't be one of them. Obituaries actually drive traffic to a website (last time I checked). Dad's obituary was going to be $200+ to publish in the Herald. No, it wasn't lengthy. Check out the pricing. It's obscene. We let the funeral home publish digitally and shared on Facebook. Then we sent it to dad's local paper where he grew up. They did a wonderful job, lovely color photo, and no charge. read more

They have ripped me off. I subscribed for 1 a month, then I got billed $27.98 end of December, I called and they told me this covers several months of the digital copy. I then got billed again mid February for $27.98, I called again and was advised again this covers several months, I then go billed in March for another $27.98. This is all for a digital subscription!!! This company is robbing its customers!!!!! read more

I get all of my breaking Yakima news from the Seattle paper. That's pretty sad. The online version has a RSS feed set-up, so I can skim the headlines and learn where the latest gang shooting or arson was, or if anybody died in an accident on the local highways. But they don't offer much more than that. read more

Whew! When you live in Sunnyside this is a major newspaper! You can get it at the library and at Safeway. I moved to the valley to learn more and be involved with hispanic culture. I feel this helped me a great deal and would have continued to be a source of info if I had remained.. read more

I am a huge proponent of newspapers but I have to say that our local newspaper is not doing so well these days in terms of customer service. Because of pricing I have gone to their option of Sunday physical deliver and weekday digital deliver (which provides not only the Yakima Herald but also the Seattle Times and the Walla Walla Union Bulletin). Since switching I have NOT received my Sunday paper probably 2 out 4 Sundays (and if you don't call early enough they can't get a replacement paper out to you until Monday...thank you but no...I don't want to read Sunday's paper on Monday) and they say they'll credit your account but I've never in all my years with the Herald ever seen a credit to my bill. And now today...no Seattle Times on the digital subscription either. For the price of over $250 a year I'm not getting much for my money. The Washington Post is getting my news to me better than this for less money per year. Don't get me wrong...I want to receive my local news from the Yakima Herald Republic but I can't afford to pay for nothing. Do better Yakima Herald. read more

NOT credible journalism! One star is too many! Reporter Don Meyers story on May 27, 2018 lied in his story "Torrent of casualties" when he wrote that my son Noble Stoneman had a "traumatic head injury" from childhood. Avoid this newspaper people! Before I agreed to an interview, Don promised to report the facts. I wanted him to prove it by letting me proof read his story. He said he was an honest journalist and sent me his facebook link. Not only did Mr. Meyers lie about my son, but he made the story slanted to sound like it was my sons fault he fell off the cliff above the Palouse Falls when actually the trail my son was on gave way because the ground is so unstable. My son did not have a traumatic brain injury and the Yakima Herald refuses to make the correction!! When they say, "Fake News" think of the Yakima Herald Republic Newspaper!!! read more

Don't bother posting in the Classifieds. I took out a 2-day ad for a yard sale, both in the paper and online. Prepared my yard sale, got all ready. Work up the morning of the sale to check my ad, found that it wasn't posted in the paper nor online. Called at 8am when they opened to find out why. I was told that they had a question about my ad and called, but didn't leave a message. No email, no further contact, just decided not to print the ad. Hmmm...seems that you would want the revenue for my ad so you would: 1. call more than once -OR- 2. leave a message so I would know you called and could return your call, as I might not have been available at the very moment you called -OR- 3. since I generated the ad through the website, you could have e-mailed me. But no, none of these things happened, so today, Friday, I am sitting here my yard sale all set up and no customers, because people use the classifieds (although not much more of the Yakima Herald). I won't even talk about the customer service when I called. Would take no responsibility for what had happened. Multiple calls to "supervisor" went unanswered. I guess as free advertising outlets become more popular (Craigslist, Facebook, etc), the Yakima Herald will phase itself out. Especially if they start charging for online content. I for one am not paying for their content (or lack thereof). read more

The content has gone down hill over the years. Monday paper they might as well combine it with Tuesday. The fees have gone up and the paper is thinner. I used to subscribe to the paper but had delivery issues in the past so I cancelled. I only buy the Thursday paper. The rest of the week I read online and use online for any advertising inserts. Well it's nice somethings don't change. The poor customer service who hangs up on you when you cancel. The salesman who doesn't give you all the information for your online subscribers. I recently tried to subscribe again at the fair it was $6.50 a month and Sunday paper included. I figured that a great offer only a couple bucks more than I pay. And don't have to go get the paper. The salesman had me call the office in a couple days to get my online information. So I call and get someone who says he's supposed to give me something to set up my online account. All I got was a pink receipt and told to call the number in the upper right. So I just had them cancel the service I'm not going to go through multiple people argue with them that I'm doing what is asked. Then a couple hrs later I get a call from the sales guy. Tell him what the lady told me. He took it the wrong way that I was telling him he's not doing his job correctly. All I was saying is what I was told from customer service what he was supposed to give but never got. In my opinion since I gave them my email address and physical. The Yakima Herald used to be a good paper. Years ago. It's not anymore. The Seattle Times owns it now, so mostly rural Yakima County has a newspaper with a Seattle big-city bias. But the worst of it is the writing that is, for the most part, by apparent illiterates for other illiterates. The paragraphs run to two sentences tops and the proofreading is apparently done by a blind chimp. They pay pretty much minimum wage to all except a few employees, and they expect a lot for that wage, so employee turnover is high and the good ones soon leave, ergo the poor writing. Frankly it's an embarrassment. Those persons who are attempting to recreate Yakima as a tourist destination might look well at how their city is being represented to the outside world by the Yakima Herald. read more

Since moving to Yakima I wanted to learn about the area and whats going on. I needed a local news source that was not all the negative stuff you see on TV. I like newspapers but prefer to get my news online. The Yakima Herald.com is one of the better sites out there. They CONSTANTLY update the content with news that is relevant and interesting to read. Would like to see more ads promoting events or sales. read more
