I can now say I've been to Yale. While speaking at a conference I decided to take a walk around campus to visit some of the sites. The campus is safe to walk, well lit, and enjoyable. I can see how this campus inspires people to do great things and why people who want to do great things want to attend Yale. I also chose to eat near campus and found it to be a great vibe, easy to find a spot to park, and overall good place. read more

Let me preface this, I was only visiting the outside area as a tourist. I am not reviewing this as a student there. I am huge fan of history, architecture, and Gilmore Girls. While in the area, I had to make a visit. It was founded in 1701 and is one of the top 3 Ivy Leagues. It is known for their law, political science, medicine, drama, and history programs. I love the Gothic architecture. They made walking around accessible. They even offer tours. Overall, I think it is a lovely school and highly notable. read more

This was my 2nd time visiting the university but the most recent roadtrip brought our entire family of 4 to the campus for a quick stop and go. Couldn't really find parking during a school day so we only drove through the neighborhood and left after having some breakfast nearby. Beautiful campus and glad I was able to come by once during winter for interviews and then again this recent visit in spring. read more

Most buildings are outmoded and historical since Yale University was founded in 1701, it is the third-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. Yet another mystifyingly beautiful college campus in the Ivy League. Yale ranks up with only Harvard and Cornell as one of the prettiest college campuses I've ever visited. The architecture is seriously fantastic and looks ancient with incredible Gothic style in every place. It's also huge! Taking up a large area of New Haven. The university has loads of different museums, art galleries, and tons of other things to explore and do. The grounds are beautiful and well kept and everybody was very friendly. Full transparency, my wife went to Yale. It's a lovely campus and an idyllic college town. However, much of the campus is locked up due to security issues. I'm used to big open campuses like in the Big Ten Universities, so that was a little off putting. That said, this is one of the classic American universities, so check it out. Probably worth doing the official tour. read more

Was here towards the end of the summer visiting with my daughter and son as part of a tour trip. This is the best looking institution I have ever visited. Certain areas are open to the public so you can tour the campus on your own. I paid for a guided tour so we saw areas that are not open to the public. The library with the historical, barely touched books and dimly lit was breath taken. You have to put this place on your activity list. Looking at all of the historical buildings, statues, and learning about the history of this institution is a gift in itself and a wonderful learning experience for all ages. The grounds are extremely clean and we had the opportunity to meet some of the students and staff members here. They were all very nice and well spoken. While we were visiting we bumped into incoming freshmans moving their belongings into the dorm. There was a team of current students helping them with their move. The experience alone will make me come back here to visit again. It's like going to an outdoor museum. read more

Yale might just edge out Harvard as being the most attractive campus in the Ivy League. The university dominates New Haven, but still seems to seamlessly integrate into the overall landscape. Parking is available all over the city, and the train station is close to campus. The overall gothic architecture is reminiscent of Hogwarts and is home to the best and brightest from all over the world. This is an urban campus with limited green spaces, but walking down the streets and alleys is just plain cool and a little haunting. Many important and powerful students passed through these walls. This place oozes history and power. It is almost intoxicating to experience. New Haven is a nice day trip for most of New England and New York, and visiting Yale is a great excuse. read more

I came out here in November, fall. It was night time when we came so the skyline from the university as you drove by it gave a haunting feel from the gothic architecture- I can only imagine how beautiful it would be during the day time. I had suggested that we come back to check it out in the day time but we ran out of time. I got to appreciate some of the structure from across the street as we drove down the road you can see that the dorms are in one of the older buildings as well and beyond that is a beautiful courtyard in the middle of the dormitories. read more

The campus tours here are awesome! Came right after spring session closed and parking was super easy! Didn't see any lots, so it must super tricky during the school year. Meters are max 2 hours, so watch your time accordingly. Even though it was off season, the parking patrol were giving tickets left and right. I highly recommend taking a campus tour for any 1st time visitors. The campus is pretty hard to navigate and it's hard to tell what's part of the city and what's part of the university. Tour guide was awesome and got us inside some of residence areas and buildings. Stellar Ivy League campus! Go to Louis Lunch afterwards. So glad this was recommended by the tour guide! ^_^ read more

Yes, to answer Eric L.'s question. People with too much time on their hands will write reviews on Ivy League schools. I am going to yelp about my time visiting the campus here. If you want to read reviews of the people who could not get into Yale, read the other reviews. The mister and I enjoyed our time visiting the campus on a sunny afternoon in the Fall. I liked the quick tip noting Yale looks like Hogwarts. Walking on the grounds, I do feel that I am walking back in time of the old country. I do assure that you not see Harry Potter, that red headed kid, the girl, and Professor Snape any time soon. We started to our walk on Grove St. and found the places where the intellectuals and their visiting parents go eat and shop for groceries. We found ourselves walking about the Schools of Management and Engineering. We walked inside Memorial Hall because the we saw people going inside and wanted to see the commotion was about . It turns out that there was was a music show for a kids choir. We left from Memorial Hall through exiting a different way and brought us into its world of Architecture from History into the Future. The history, majestic columns lining Memorial Hall and Cathedral Structure that housed the impressive Sterling library. The mister and I enjoyed the beauty of these historical gems. We also enjoyed our people watching too. We observed students proudly displaying their Yale logo sweatshirts, joggers wearing out their shorty shorts in a chilly afternoon, and the aspiring actors sitting on the grassy lawns reading their lines. My husband and I went on the free tour given by the university. It is given at Monday through Friday 10:30am and 2pm and Saturday and Sunday at 1:30pm from the visitor center. It is started by a video and then an undergrad takes you around campus. You learn about some of the early leader of Yale. You also learn about the unique living conditions for undergrads at Yale. Many of the building and architecture is also described. The tour last about 90 minutes and covers a large portion of the campus. A lot of walking and a good clip. Then you end the tour at the Yale Bookstore. The young man tried to answer all of the groups questions the best he could. Overall a great way to get a high level understanding of the campus. It is free and was glad we made the time to do it. If you have never been in the area a good way to get your bearings. read more

Here with a photographer for senior Portraits, this place is well maintained and historical. Buildings are Unique, Davenport has unicorns on top of their arched doors on the outside, gave me laugh! The wood carving is Unique to every building and every room. Berkley had animal heads hanging around the Dining Commons, my type of style! Davenport has a quiet study room with comfy chairs-for napping? And couches all over. Seems more of a hangout spot to me. There is security all over, which I like. One of my coworkers cars got rummaged through (she was in the middle of unloading things) and within 10 minutes of the guy running away (with nothing) she was done giving a statement with the police. Yale has a beautiful campus with some neat history! I walked in for a 2pm tour, was warmly greeted, and told the tour would last 70 minutes. Cool; I was excited to learn some interesting history about the campus. Shortly before the tour started, a school group arrived (assuming they had arranged to be on the tour as well). The tour guide, A., was fine until, 25 minutes into the tour, he says, "Well, I know you guys (the school group) have to catch your bus, so I'll end the tour here. Thanks for coming!" and walked away! I'm standing there like... "erm... what about the other 45 minutes of MY tour?" Aaaand he was gone. Oohkayyy, sooo... I kind of wandered around on my own then, but obviously missed out on what I came for. I was extremely disappointed. The art gallery was cool (and free), and worth checking out. Yale might just be the coolest college campus i have ever visited. The university is literally spread across New Haven (yes, that big). Parking is available all over the city, and did see a train station near by the campus. The gothic architecture reminds you of Hogwarts from the dorky Harry Potter movies. The campus itself is pretty urban, lots of streets and alleys, kinda scary, no real open green or campus field. What impressed me the most was how many important and powerful people attended and walked the same campus i did.... tried to see president Taft's big ass chair, (literally he has a big ass and had an extra-wide seat in the balcony of Woolsey Hall) but was not allowed and was told I had to actually attend a concert to get inside the hall. I came to Yale to specifically see the Cushing Whitney medical library (which has brains EVERYWHERE) and is awesome!!! Also heard a chase scene in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was filmed at Yale (posing as Marshall College in the movie) in 2007 which shows a bunch of the campus. This place has so much history and power and is truly an intoxicating experience. read more

It is the closest the US will can get to Hogwarts being real without having to pay to get into Universal Studios. We did a tour starting at the visitor center with a current student after having walked around it a bit ourselves. There is a lot to see and take in, but even if you aren't looking to go to school here and you find yourself in the neighborhood, go and check it out and be amazed at how beautiful a college campus can be. read more

I visited Sterling Memorial Library and the Yale campus several years ago, and though in some ways I was impressed by the early 20th century collegiate Gothic architecture, in retrospect, having taken a degree in art history, I think that it pales in comparison to Oxbridge (500 years older)--"the real thing," so to speak. Earlier, I did apply to Yale as an undergraduate and was in awe of the institution. I had a group "interview" at the Washington Athletic Club in Seattle. In the end, I was put on the waiting list. Now I am wondering if there weren't certain racial quotas in place at the time. In fact, it appears that they have gotten worse at institutions such as this one. I recently read that Asian-Americans need a 1550 SAT (on the 1600 math/verbal scale) to have an equal chance of getting in to an elite college as a Black student with a score of 1100, according to Thomas Espenshade, Princeton sociologist. White students are similarly discriminated against in favor of blacks and Hispanics. http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/015/463ufyzo.asp?nopager=1 If a college or university wants to raise its average freshmen SAT scores, it admits more Asian-Americans. If it wants diversity, it admits more blacks. (Take for example, Amherst: 13% Asian-American, 13% black, and 13% Hispanic. Dartmouth: 19% Asian-American, 5% black, 5% Hispanic. Yale is somewhere in-between). What is going on? What ever happened to the principle of merit (hard work + intelligence + dedication) without regard for the color of one's skin or the shape of one's eyes? At one time the number of Jews admitted to elite East Coast colleges was strictly limited. It now seems Asians and whites are. Though wait-listed at the undergraduate college, I did not feel at the time that I was being passed over because the administrators wanted the space to go to an African-American with an academic record distinctly inferior to my own. Now there are actual caps in place, which institutions of higher education refuse to make public. Yale and other elite institutions (especially Amherst) continue intractably to discriminate. I bet the Obama daughters would still be considered among the group of "disadvantaged minorities" at Yale. Penn (and sometimes Brown) used to be considered the "armpit of the Ivy League," but Yale, being surrounded by the city of New Haven, actually deserves the crown. Likewise, the Youtube promotional video put out by the Yale admissions office is one of the tackiest ("rah, rah, rah") I have ever seen. Touring colleges with my son. He had his six top college choices picked out to visit this month. Northwestern, UChicago, Notre Dame, Harvard, Yale and Boston College. Today we visited Yale. What Spectacular grounds. From the beginning of entering the SSS hall, the Atmosphere, starting with the students down to the surrounding campus grounds exudes class and style throughout. The walking tour was the best of all of our school tours so far. Our group ambassador (a sophomore at Yale) was extremely knowledgeable of the entire campus and shared the wonderfully historic background of Yale with us in great detail. The cleanliness and beauty of the campus is quite impressive along with the amazing architectural details within all of the buildings. The two libraries on campus were just incredible. Unlike all of our tours so far, with the exception of Notre Dame, we were welcomed into many of the buildings on the campus and taken inside by our guide and given such interesting information on each place. The libraries specifically blew me away. The story of how the architect drew up Blueprints for a cathedral in the center of campus, but the school said that they were not allowed to have a cathedral on campus, so the architect scratched out the word "Cathedral" from top of his blueprints and inserted the word "Library." So many unique stories like that. The admissions meeting was also very well done and extremely professional. The admissions director spent an hour and a half discussing the school in full detail and making sure to cover every aspect of campus life and what the students should expect. He covered all areas of concern for parents, including financials and he was a great example of what I would expect coming from a Yale Alumni, and now faculty member. Very impressed with the overall tour . My son says Yale is a perfect blend of Northwestern and NotreDame, with a little bit of UChicago city life thrown in. You get the sense of a large campus life and population with the quaintness and community of a smaller inclusive college. We drove around afterwards and ate at a great place called Elm City Central just a few minutes from the campus. It was delicious! The town is beautiful and full of every amenity you can imagine. Yale is exactly what we expected it to be. It definitely stands up to its reputation. read more

In 2003, I went to see a taping of College Jeopardy here at Yale and was impressed by the old-stone architecture. However, I truly dislike the fact that Yale is affiliated as being George W. Bush's undergraduate alma mater because he was one of our worst presidents in American history. I wish this higher educational institution had groomed Dubya to be a better public speaker and decision maker, but it did not seem to do so at all (eye roll). I like that Yale seems to have an amazing American Studies PhD program that I might apply for one day, and that it is within train ride distance of Manhattan. But I am more inspired by other Ivy League schools like Brown and Columbia (biased because it's my graduate school alma mater). read more

I attended Yale University for graduate school. I enrolled in a Ph.D. program in statistics, choosing Yale over Harvard. I left the program with a master's after one year, because I did not find the university to be a good environment for me to have a self-actualizing experience. I chose Yale over Harvard (which has a much more prestigious statistics program) because at Harvard, professors voiced to me a sort of "territoriality" of academic disciplines that I found unnecessary and not particularly constructive. At Yale, in the statistics department, the professors seemed eager to collaborate, with older, established professors drawing in new professors to research in related areas. I thought this was a fantastic environment, the way I wanted to do academic research. The professors in the Statistics program were intelligent, friendly, and generous with their time. I was disappointed, however, with the actual program I was in. The coursework in my program did not work well for me. Classes were large and mixed students of vastly different ability levels. Coursework was straightforward, and the time-frame for assignments was very short (mostly less than one week), making it hard for me to manage my time effectively--I'd have a day free with no assignments to work on, followed by crunch time with 3 assignments to work on a day later. The professors seemed to encourage me to "get through" the first few years, explaining to me that the coursework was not very important. However, my time is valuable. As someone who has worked in business for a number of years before returning to graduate school, and often bills a high hourly rate, I am not interested in spending a few years on something that is not self-actualizing. I think that, given the intelligence of the professors and the financial resources available in the university, Yale and my program could have done a lot better. I was also disappointed with the environment of the school as a whole, especially, concerning the environment for arts and sciences students in the graduate programs. Yale has amazing financial resources, but I was disappointed by how they were put to use. A lot of things that I would consider very basic were poorly executed. For example, I would think it reasonable, given the finances of Yale, that they would do basic things like keep windows and doors in building well-insulated, and keeping the heating systems in most buildings in good repair, but the building maintenance, except for some of the newer buildings and the undergraduate colleges, lagged behind the other schools, public and private, that I have spent time in. There was also a lot of negativity and cynicism among the graduate student culture. I found heavy alcohol use to be the dominant pastime of graduate students. People had sleep schedules that I found to be unhealthy, and I found it hard to socialize with other grad students on a schedule that I would consider to be sane (i.e. going out for happy hour, or maybe as late as 9PM, rather than midnight, when many of the grad students went out). A lot of the graduate students would bash the professors, spewing negativity, rather than taking responsibility and looking for solutions. I found it unpleasant to be in this sort of environment. My intuition is that Yale would be a much better place for undergraduates than graduate students. Unlike most universities, Yale does not have a student union. Many of the communal resources at Yale are housed in the undergraduate colleges, which are not accessible to graduate students (unless you befriend the undergraduates). However, the undergraduates have full access to the graduate facilities, including the building that houses the graduate school's main dorm and dining hall. The school effectively has a tiered system where graduate students are given fewer resources and opportunities than undergraduates. Another problem I had was that the school separates graduate student organizations from undegraduate organizations, and makes it hard to integrate the two. I might have stayed at Yale, had I had a better experience with the coursework, or a social environment I found more conducive to the sort of lifestyle I had wanted. I am glad that I left my program after 1 year, with a master's. But I am a bit sad: I think I would have worked well with the professors in my department, on research. And I think Yale is losing a lot of opportunities. Not only will they fail to attract and retain the best graduate students, given their current atmosphere, but I think that most of the graduate students there are not going to be realizing their full potential. read more

i graduated in 1973 from the undergraduate college. the university was intellectually stimulating, recreationally exciting, and socially engrossing. when i became homeless in 1981 and returned to the city as a place i knew and could survive in, the alumni association headquarters was extremely welcoming to me. i was able to get out of the elements in the winter there, relax in a friendly environment, read the complimentary newspapers, and have a cup of coffee. this may seem minor, but to a homeless person it meant all the difference in the world. unfortunately, on other occasions i tested my welcome on the regular campus and it was not given. i was arrested a number of times for trespassing and a new haven judge asked me to leave town, which i did, out of respect. before that, the astronomy department secretary specifically called in a mob of police on me. i had been a graduate student in astronomy in 1980. this has created a severe chasm for me between the university and the alumni association. every ounce of success i achieve now will only exacerbate the situation, because i don't feel grateful anymore, and i do hope to succeed. giving them a rating is therefore an onerous task. i can't average the two parts. i have to choose, and it would seem an arbitrary choice. i'm going to make it randomly now by starting my watch chronograph, then stopping it and using the hundredths as a multiplier with 2. if the result is integer part 0, the rating is 1. if the result is integer part 1, the rating is 5. it's 0, so the rating will be 1. read more

Yale has some of the nicest and most beautiful buildings for a university setting and the campus is well maintained and well preserved with a tremendous amount of history. I recommend that you join the twice daily campus tours for an in depth of the history and culture of Yale. Definitely worth the time. read more
