I can't recommend this place high enough - my favorite restaurant. I want to be perfectly clear - fantastic! I like nagiri and I eat it once a week, usually for lunch at Nikko (which is great), this place is better. If you've read my reviews you know I consider eating at a place like voting - by supporting it you are voting that they continue to do it the way that they are and that they may stay in business. Sushi was just ok and very overpriced for the quality. Service was slow and poor. Their other location is better. Trying too hard to be a trendy restaurant and fail to get the basics right. We frequent Yama and love the fresh offerings along with the wonderful staff! We usually start with a ginger salad, miso soup or Brussel sprouts. Sashimi selections are always super fresh and interesting. Especially if you let them know your palate preferences and allow them to be creative. Just moved here. Needed a sushi place. I FOUND IT! Yama is it. Let's break it down: 1) appetizers - Ka raage - best I've had in a while - Gyoza - pan crisp bottom and perfectly cooked noodle top - edamame - they use the good salt - calamari - perfectly cooked and fresh 2) Specialty Roll and Sashimi - Magic Roll - crunchy interior and melt in your mouth avocado and top - Ballantyne - My new favorite - Lobster Roll - I'm not a fan of the Seaweed on the inside of the Roll, so this was good, but not great for me 4) side -fried Brussels - delicious! First time to Yama. I said I wanted to have a glass of wine and take out sushi. The hostess pointed me to the bar (right beside the host station) and said they could take care of me. But there were no seats at the bar (which she could have seen if she looked.) I came back to the host station and one of the other hosts, noting my confusion, escorted me to the sushi bar. Once I got there - smooth sailing! One of the sushi chefs immediately greeted me and a server also greeted me and helped me with the menu. While I was perusing the menu, the server showed me the list of special fish available - all sounded marvelous. I decided on The Waverly, from the menu, which involved salmon and tempura shrimp. While I enjoyed my glass of wine waiting on my order, the sushi chef handed me a complimentary portion of lovely salmon nigiri since I was new to Yama. Shortly thereafter, the server brought me my take out order. All in all it was a nice visit. I will say however that when one takes out sushi, one loses a major part of the sushi experience. Opening a plastic clam-shell container to find the pieces of sushi more or less crammed inside is just not the same as enjoying the appearance of a lovely plate in the restaurant. Great Japanese style teriyaki food! I had the gyoza dumplings appetizer, which had 6 dumplings served with yummy dipping sweet sauce. The dumplings are flavorful and they have steamed pork inside. For lunch entree I ordered the salmon teriyaki which was a generous portion. They serve it with stir fried vegetables and a scoop of rice with a nice salmon steak. I found the flavors wonderful and just the right combination of sweetness and salty teriyaki. I hear good things about their sushi so will try it in the future. They were busy with lunch but had good service. Parking is very busy so I parked in the Waverly deck (by the Hilton) and walked to the restaurant. read more

Back to one of my favs: Yama, Waverly. My friends first time. As always, started with the cold appies: seaweed salad & James Island tuna & avocado "salad". Yum! He loved each, but combined it's heaven. Sweet & tart lemon drop martini livened my palate! Dinner: He had the Yaki Udon with chicken. Stirred fried udon noodles, napa cabbage, shiitake mushroom, onion, carrot & spring onion. Generous portion with good ratio of protein, ingredients were very fresh & flavorful. I had the Grilled maple leaf farm duck breast w. steamed white rice. A beautiful display, however ... I forgot to order it medium & it came well done. Which made it tough and dry. Thankfully there was some seaweed salad to moisten it up a bit. Our server, Jennifer, was peppy and accommodating. Just wish she asked how I'd like my duck prepared. Compared to the South Park location, this space is brighter and more contemporary and frankly, much more fun. I love the open concept and all the textures on the floor, walls, seating, etc. The Teriyaki chicken dish that I had was a generous portion and tasty. Our server was very attentive and we liked his personality. The only thing that was frustrating was when my dish came out about ten minutes before my lunch companion's did. This is always awkward. Even though she said, "ah go ahead and don't wait for me", it still feels really weird and rude being the only one eating. At the same time, you realize that your food is getting COLD. This is what you call really fancy sushi & it is GOOD, but be prepared to pay a fancy price. They got sushi rolls topped with filet mignon, they got lobster rolls topped with expensive caviar, they serve Otoro both sashimi and nigiri style at $18 a pop, etc. All of our food was exceptional. The only thing they could improve on was service. Appetizers took way too long to come out and the place was practically empty. Entrees came out a little all over the place. Everything was so high quality that even the sushi I typically avoid, like eel and red clam, was astounding. This is gonna be my go-to sushi in the South Charlotte area. The service is absolutely amazing & the environment is relaxing and friendly. Everyone is super attentive. I got the chance to try a little bit of everything but here are some of my favorites: Crunchy roll (shrimp tempura w/ crab layer on top) & Morrison roll (shrimp tempura w/ seared filet on top), Teriyaki Chicken (chicken is cooked almost crispy and it's absolutely perfect) w/ fried rice, and their Brussels sprouts, which are to die for! Even if you don't like Brussels sprouts, I recommend them. Absolutely delicious! I'll be back again to try some new dishes for sure. read more

This is the story of the best sushi I've ever had. Firstly, what a beautiful restaurant. We were seated at the sushi bar at our request.. to oogle the amazing visions of fish. There we could see everything coming out- each more beautiful than the next! We saw the avacado piled with tuna and had to try it. That is when we realized, the tuna and avacado had the same texture. We came here the night before I had a planned induction since I hadn't had raw sushi in 9 months. Omg it was so good. While it is a bit pricey, you will not be disappointed in the portions, freshness of the fish, and quality of the servers. They have a great variety in quality fish, and the rolls are just beautiful!
