On a Saturday night when popular ramen destination like Michi and Tatsuya were unbearably crowded, I got the chance to discover a new Japanese (and partially Korean) spot. If you get the chance, I HIGHLY recommend the Tuna Tower from the separate menu attached to the front. It is such an ostentatious piece of deliciousness that anyone with eyes and a camera must pause to capture the presentation. Though it's a tad pricey, I enjoy it more than a traditional sushi roll. That Tuna Tower was so good I may come here and just order that a second visit. I also got the tonkatsu udon. The soup was subtly sweet, but a bit salty. Food was okay... SERVICE RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL. We had heard from a few people this place was a nice local spot to try in the neighborhood so we were looking forward to trying it out. We arrived around 5:30 (happy hour ends at 6). We were seated in the back corner of the restaurant, away from all the diners at the time. Didn't pay any mind to that initially until It took 15 minutes before someone came to ask for our order or even water. When we asked to put food orders in as well to make the happy hour we were told "drinks only right now." Our server was snarky and rushed us with our bill. Food that we order that was supposed to be hot was cold. My family and I were enjoying our time to catch up and as we were still eating and finishing drinks. We were brought the bill. The server hovered over as the bill was paid, and shortly after another woman came over questioning the tip on the bill. My parents don't always understand the tipping percentages so I bring cash to leave a tip in the event that one of them pays on a card (because I anticipate them not leaving enough). This has always worked at ANY and EVERY other restaurant we've dined at. However, here we were questioned about our tip and then she approached us again asking if we wanted to change. Despite the rushed service and subpar food, my family and I remained respectful. As we left I spoke to the same person and communicated that we were planning to tip with cash and that being asked about how much the tip was and whether we were going to leave more was rude and unacceptable. However, I've never experienced this ever before. Very disappointing, especially based on the experience we had dining here. Response to owner: Hi Daniel. I understand the tip being less than appropriate on the card reader. My point is that your server came over and asked before we were done with our meal. I was going to leave a cash tip. But your server came over and asked not once but twice, BEFORE WE WERE DONE. That was that part that was rude. I'm not a sushi or aficionada or expert, but I do love sashimi. I got the combo along with green mussels. I'm a fan of mussels just about any way; these were okay, but not favorite (that's a personal preference). I love unagi, so I had to get a couple pieces of nigiri; the eel was perfect. Highly recommend Yanagi! My spouse and I like to come once a week to once every other week. Every waitress is nice and attentive. The restaurant is always clean. Our sushi rolls always come out quick. I love the Las Vegas Roll! Sometimes I like to switch out the salmon for crab and there is never an issue with my request. I feel like the food was mediocre at best. I did not feel anything that made this food special. Out of the sushi rolls we got, I feel like the calamari crunchy roll was the best roll thus far. It is a little pricy but hey, sushi is pretty expensive around these parts. I put in a 50 roll order for my wedding (50 people) and not only was the sushi fresh and delicious, they prepared the order perfectly on time and with the right amounts, no issue. Decent sushi, sweet service, a powerful martini menu (and like, specialty cocktails served in a martini glass that are mostly chilled liquor but with chocolate or sour mix so they shouldn't be called martinis), and a very good Korean menu. My favorite Bi Bim Bap is still DK's, but Yanagi is great as well. I like how the spicy sauce comes in a little squeeze bottle with a pink top - it seems so home-made and cute. Yanagi used to always put coupons in the local paper and they were always cool about redeeming them for us. And the happy hour is pretty great for a low price with good quality sushi and hot, goopy appetizers that make the cheap drinks go down that much easier.
