Whlist Little Captain may not have inventive or standout food or be a 10/10, the food here is what you'd expect from a cafe, prepared well, with no pretension (the sweet morsels here are delicious - remember to check out the sweets cabinet on your way out). It is also cheaper than the cafes on nearby Carlisle St, and without the crowds. And on Saturday or Sunday morning, sometimes that's all you want - some scrambled eggs on toast, the weekend paper, sitting outside under the shade of the trees with some sunlight streaming in. Remember to order at the counter and tell the ladies/gents behind the counter where you are sitting.

On a wet summers day the mist was rolling in so it made it all the more pretty. Everything about the cafe is thought thru, from the bakery to finishing touches of the decor. Our waiter was efficient and had a great sense of humour. He certainly made it all the more memorable. The drinks came quickly followed by our delicious meals. We were there for breakfast but there is everything from buying a loaf of bread and toasting it yourself, pastries to the purchase of three different sized picnic baskets. And if the salads on display are anything to go by I'll certainly be back to order one and stroll through their gardens. They are currently expanding the gardens. But there is plenty to do! From lawn bowls, children's play areas, picnic area and meet bubble and squeak the residents of the pig sty. I couldn't recommend the Piggery Cafe enough. I will certainly be back. Succulent and cooked to perfection on a hot grill. Chips were golden and crispy with a rosemary salt, really good. The sausage and pickles were delicious. There's no phone signal (for us anyway) so it's a rare chance to fully focus without the temptation of peeking at the phone. The meals took a fair stint to arrive, but we weren't there for fast food and the location is incredibly beautiful so it was a nice chance to stop and breathe. Speaking of breathing - we were seated outside, and every time the wind gusted our way there was a waft of .... I don't know what. Sewage? Pigs? Something on the septic side of the scent spectrum (I know, pure poetry). It wasn't pleasant so I removed a star for that.

If my beloved two:bob were only open on Mondays this would not be a problem! But I digress... Mitte is cute enough. The staff are quite nice too. Coffee (or in my case tea) orders are taken the moment you sit down. Plus water and menus are brought over in a jiffy. My issue really lies with the menu. Everything is $12.50+, with pretty much all the egg dishes are just shy of $20. Now, for a weekend brunch, I have no real problems with these prices. But during the week when you don't necessarily want all the bells and whistles and prefer some simpler, cheaper options (think eggs on toast with optional extras or a standard porridge for under $10), the choices are non-existent. I have tried the breakfast crumble (which was quite nice, but too sweet for my taste) and the wheat-free porridge (the only porridge option). I think the porridge was actually polenta based, which I wished they mentioned on the menu rather than calling it a "seed & grain" mixture (I was expecting something completely different to what arrived on the table). It was ok, but I wouldn't be ordering it again. I like my porridge kept pretty simple (even if it isn't oat based), and this was just a bit too weird for me, not just in terms of consistency but also flavours and toppings wise too. Oh well. I have no doubt I would feel differently about Mitte if I was here on a weekend and ordering one of the yummy sounding egg dishes, but alas, it's Monday and I just want something simple...if they added a few more simpler & cheaper options to the menu I have no doubt it would get an extra star.

Mitte is a cute cafe off the main areas and a nice change from the hustle and bustle of Brunswick or Smith St. Perfect to go to after a morning walk in the Park. We had our sandwiches to go and even though they didn't appear to give you a great quantity of ham, the salty smoky quality of it carried it's way through every bite of sandwich while the avocado kept it moist enough to comfortably eat. From what I gather on my own, they offer a small to moderate amount of wines from the area. Those available to taste are written on the daily board. Despite selling reds and blends, none of these were offered to sample before purchase. Not really a meal place. Menu consisted of a $32 cheese platter of 4 small wedges (2-3 bites) of cheese and a small container of chutney. If you wanted meats or crackers to eat these on, theze are purchased separatly. Small shop items available to browse, mostly sauces and marmalades. Nobody seemed to care I was there or that I left. Was not worth the drive for what they offer, nor the service they don't offer.

Being surrounded by furniture stores, advertising companies and creative agencies however keeps this great little café on its toes all week. But unlike other more well known cafes in the vicinity, Amsterdam Café tends to keep a more down key (read: affordable) character which is appreciated completely. One of my favourite places for breakfast when I used to work on Church Street, Amsterdam café keeps its meals interesting and low priced - which is far form what other places in this mixed use area can claim. Try the Mushroom, goats cheese an thyme omelette - it's a delicious rendition for the senses. Or if you have a sweet tooth (like I do) you must have the French toast - generous portions of thick cut bread which are deceivingly light and satisfying. Maple syrup comes on the side so you can choose how sweet you want your breakfast to be.
