How could becoming a living voodoo doll cure me of my ailments? After much urging from a friend to try acupuncture (since I have a condition that responds poorly to conventional treatments), I decided one time can't hurt. At her referral, I saw David Schiman. He is a very easy going person who will put all your fears at ease and answer your questions to the best of his abilities. After a brief intake during your first time there, including an extensive medical history check and some questions about what you're looking to improve, you'll be brought into the treatment room where the fun starts. Like I said, I was skeptical. What happened next completely changed my mind. Since my shoulders were very tight that day, I ended up getting two needles in the trapezius area of my shoulders. At first they spasmed badly and actually scared me for a moment, but then they relaxed. Just totally relaxed! I'm not sure how this actually worked, if a nerve was hit and that relaxed them, but it was like a miracle. I won't lie; some of the needles will hurt. Some will bleed. Some will fall out or irritate your skin. Just be prepared for it. Once all the needles are in it is somehow very calming. I like that it's forced meditation in a way - you can't move because of the needles, so you have to calm your mind in other ways than physically. After a session I always leave completely relaxed, as if I'd slept a whole night's sleep in under an hour. This practice is very clean, very well lit, and despite being a place where you get stuck full of needles it is never scary. The location itself is right on Main Street in Manayunk, and even though it's on the third floor of an office building it's still very easy to find. If you ever were interested in acupuncture but unsure if it's for you, I would definitely recommend you see David. I'm a believer now, and feel like this location is a great place to start for any beginner.

Most times the people you're in the room with are quiet and the experience is relaxing, and other times you could get someone who is coughing or clearing their throat the whole time or just generally noisy, which could hinder the relaxation portion of your experience. All in all, 85% of the time you get a good group.

I do not believe the therapist with long reddish hair is formally trained. I am a retired esthetician of 18 years, who's had massage all over the world, from beach stalls to five star hotels and this experience was shockingly poor. First, I started face down but my headrest was too high so the therapist kept banging into the bottom of my head to access my neck. She seemed oblivious to this and unaware that an adjustment was needed. I scheduled a 60 minute classic massage because I just wanted to relax. I did not request stones but suddenly the massage stopped. Without saying anything she left the room to retrieve stones that were much too hot for my skin and that I did not want. Then to top it all off, she stuck her hands in my hair and started rubbing my scalp. I was actually shocked because everyone in hospitality knows that you NEVER touch a client's head, stomach or breast without verbal permission. These are highly personal potential trigger areas. When she asked me to turn over she never moved from the top of the table. A privacy towel was not held up. (What school did she graduate from??) I thought she would begin working my neck and shoulders which is why I came, but she stuck her hands back in my hair. At that point I asked her to stop. If she has a legitimate license she needs to practice on co-workers to improve her performance. But I'm assuming the other therapists are better. Hopefully they are.

However, I was experiencing immense neck pain at the time and was at my limit--I would've done anything to make the pain go away and go away for good. My cousin suggested Dr. Chris to me and after that very first visit, I had fallen in love with chiropractic care and continue to go to Balance for both my injuries and preventative care. Dr. Chris is incredibly knowledgeable. He'll answer every question I have and never makes me feel rushed. Some visits, I don't even mention what areas are bothering me, but it always seems like as soon as I get on the table he finds the exact spot that's causing the trouble. The location has also been very convenient no matter where I lived. It's right near Rittenhouse Sq and there's tons of public transportation options. I work near by and so quick lunch appointments are a plus. Several occasions I've stopped by without an appointment, and they always squeeze me in. Sometimes I'll have to wait a few minutes to be seen, but it's worth it--plus who doesn't expect some kind of wait for a doctor's appointment? I'd much rather wait 10 mins for an adjustment and feel instant relief than wait 45 mins at my primary for them to tell me there's nothing they can do about my neck pain. Over the years, I've also taken advantage of the monthly sales they've had to offer. I've had massages with Kathy, Steven, and Jeannille. These three therapists all have different styles, but every massage I've had has been fantastic. I wouldn't consider Balance to have a "spa-like" atmosphere, but I would much rather get a massage here than anywhere else as they are focused not only on relaxation, but also and more importantly, on healing. Ok so maybe I've raving about this place because I've been coming here for seven years, but then again I wouldn't have been coming here for seven years if there was nothing to rave about.
