Year Up is a great program. I am a volunteer mentor. The program assigns a mentor to a student (mentee) during the start of the program. The students get about a half year of courses in IT or finance and general business/corporate world etiquette such as networking, interviews, resume writing, etc. I think the stipend program is great. Students will lose money if they do something wrong such as being tardy. After six months or so of courses, the students are provided an internship in the Boston area. The program has a pretty good success/graduation rate. Each mentee has an advisor assigned to him or her. I meet with my mentee every other week to see how things are going with life, any issues at work, and if i can help him with anything. read more

A few of my colleagues have graduated from the Year Up program in Boston. I didn't really know too much about year up till I meeting my work colleague and hearing his story.. Year Up is a 1 year training program helps out urban young adults 18-24. The program provides them with a combo "of technical and professional skills, college credits, an educational stipend and corporate apprenticeship." - that last part is from their website.. but it is a great opportunity for many of our city's young adults who may not have the chance to further their education or training by themselves. Hands down the best thing that ever happened in my life. When no one wanted to give me a chance they did. It was the hardest year of my life. It was also the most productive. When they ask you to be open and honest its because the are wlling to go the extra mile to help you will everything even if its not school related. In one year i was paid to learn and now i make over 20/hr. I literally went from being homeless to working on buying a home. If you dont believe me go to the school and look up darryl cox. Contact me personnally. I am willing to help out other who are in the position i was in. I recommend this to anyone that needs to get on the right path and wants it. I usually do not write reviews online but I feel like I need to say something about Year Up. I had two interns from Year Up in my group and I have met a few others in different events of the Corporation I work for and I can state that I am very disappointed. It seems to me that some kids can "excel" in that program but when they start to work in a company, they are nothing like the Year Up coordinator talks about them. As one of the students of the program (an intern) said to me: " that's a place for stupid people that couldn't get into College". I had to change jobs because I could not stand stubborn and unethical workers that thought they were better than everybody else. Please, a one year program does not make people capable of performing well at a job. Giving them a job, is just called charity. read more

I wouldn't recommend this school. They want to know about your life, and ask too many personal questions. Some of us don't have the best income or the best upbringing. They also ask you to be completely honest, but who is? This shouldn't be required. This school is supposed to be helping urban students succeed, but instead they look at you up and down and tell you that the school isn't for you? I'm a teacher myself and I enjoy helping my students learn. I have the patience & motivation for it. To me this place has only been discriminating and VERY unprofessional. I know maybe they don't want to invest money on a lost cause, but if they want to learn why deny them the opportunity? I think that if any person is willing to put the effort in, they should be given a chance. read more

i applied for year up and the director was very disrespectful to me i told him i would tell him everything they needed to know for i can be able to goto school to better my life and my future , but what i did say was "i dont want to get deep into my life if it had nothing to do with me wanting to learn " but Chris Knight the director called me a liar straight to my face not once not twice but threw times during the interview i had with him and his co-worker , my face turned really red i never had anyone insult me like that since highschool when my teacher would tell me to just drop out , but i repeated to him plenty times that i wouldnt lie but he said i quote "no you just said made it clear that your basically going to lie , your a liar we dont accept liars" i know damn well he knew he got me all messed up cause of the face expression i gave i was so embaressed i looked at the floor because i felt my blood boiling i just wanted to yell at him for calling me that but i just didnt say nothing else after that .. im guessing he seen it in my face which was the reason why he told me ill give you another chance that hell call me next week n friday to make another interview even tho i was mad he called me a liar that made me happy so i said ok but i had told him before i left that the school already gave me an interview for the next that he just looked at me then walked away i just said w.e ima still come in tomorrow . so when the next day came i got dressed the way they wanted me to with a line-up and all the paper work i need plus the essay i called them just to let them know im omw they say "ooh you dont have an interview today Chris Knight said he would call you next week on friday" i said fine ill just wait but can i speak to him the lady said "hes not in hes on vacation since yday for 2 weeks" i say to her how i was speaking with him face to face yday how is he on vacation since yday ? is he still going to call me? . I am an Alumni of the Year Up program and I would recommend it to everyone I know that is looking for a fresh start and just doesn't know where to begin. Don't listen to the ppl who think that they ask too many personal questions or what ever their foolish and uneducated reasons are for not choosing this program. They are willing to give any and everyone they can a chance. Of course they have to choose a number of ppl because they only get so much funding. As an Alumni I can say this because I have been and graduated for this program. They open so many possibilities for the young urban youth that no one else wants to give a chance to. I have friends that went with nothing but their GED's and are now working at Harvard University. I myself work at a successful investment company and am enrolling to Northeastern University. Before Year Up I had no idea where my life was headed being young with a baby and only my high school diploma but thank God I heard about Year Up and it paved the way for me. So don't listen to these ppl who know NOTHING! They only want to help and they are more than flexible and understanding. I know from experience! read more
