It's a short walk to the nunnery and abbey from the dock where the ferry dropped us off. The nunnery is on the way to the abbey and is mostly in ruins. It's still worth a stop to understand the history, although you can't go inside. If you're lucky you might even see some hairy coos on the walk to the abbey. The abbey is having some work done so there was scaffolding on one side. But the architecture is still stunning. It's in a beautiful location. The interior is serene and tranquil. This was on our must-see list during our Scotland visit and it was wonderful to spend the hours here.

This is because, until he retired in 2008, Yorkshireman Harry Slater was the owner and chief-cook and bottle washer! However, now that he has retired the coffee shop has gone to new ownership but not very far because it has been bought by one of Harry's former Chefs - so you can be sure the high standards which Harry set are being carried on. Inside is clean and very attractively laid out, small but perfectly formed. You can order up an all-day breakfast any time from 9am onwards, or pop in for lunch or early evening meal where a really good choice of menu is available. Baking and delicious sweet puddings are also available along with the usual hot drinks and cold soft drinks. The coffee shop tends to close for a few weeks over the winter but if you have a special occasions you'd like catered then they are more than happy to let you book the room for private functions - at a very reasonable cost.
