Another great Yelp Event! This is the second Yelp Artisan's Market I've been to. The first one was…read morea few years ago held at Algonquin College (I think it was called a Bazaar, but it was the same idea - a place for local artisans to showcase their wares). Both were excellent and I look forward to the next one. This year it was in partnership with Operation Come Home, an organization that works with street-involved youth. The staff there were wonderful and really seemed to welcome Yelp and the local vendors to their space. Upon entrance everyone got a free raffle ticket for a chance to win one of the many prizes that were donated by the vendors. There was a photo booth at the entrance (Dan Matthews Photography) where you could have your photo taken with a plethora of cool props. Vendors were on the main and second floors. There were lots of neat vendors and a wide variety of products being offered. I love that this event helped local artisans get more exposure. I tried the cheese bread from La Petite Confiserie and it was the most delicious gluten-free bread that I've ever had. Not crumbly nor gooey, which is my usual complaint with GF bread. I didn't even realize it was gluten-free until I returned to the booth to grab a business card. The macarons at Sweet Shop Cakes were also excellent. The chocolate ones were rich and had a brownie taste to them. I also had a pastry at Lolai's Yummies and it was fluffy yet flaky and had a custard cream swirled in it with raisins. It was the right amount of sweetness. Operation Come Home has a store that is open year-round called re:Purpose which sells mostly upcycled items made by local artisans as well as street-involved youth that come to their centre. They usually don't open on the weekends, but they were open during the Yelp's Local Artisans Market, which was great! Overall, I felt it was a successful event that brought more awareness to both Operation Come Home and Yelp!

Visitors are made to feel very welcomed. The canals and waterways are stunning and Parliament Hill is an absolute must to visit. Summer time changing of the guard is a great experience and has to be on your list to watch. There are free tours of the Parliament buildings. I highly suggest doing this. It is a delightful city with boat tours, walking tours and interesting history.

We stayed at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier, a historic 1912 French Gothic Revival hotel situated adjacent to Parliament Hill. It was so easy to walk to many sites in Ottawa. We took a river boat tour on the Rideau Canal. We shopped and dined at restaurants in ByWard Market. We enjoyed the National Gallery of Canada. We learned so much at the Royal Canadian Mint and we explored Parliament Hill. It was a nice little trip.

Karaoke is the main draw of course, but the room is also set up great for parties with lots of couches and areas to set up for doing presents and games and stuff. The staff was super accommodating and let the girls use the microphones to do play mafia and call bingo as well. Great spot, hidden gem, highly recommend if you're out of ideas for a birthday party!

So I won tickets to this gala through Yelp (woo hoo!). It was put on by an organization called…read more"Health and Charity" and was in support of CHEO (Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario). This was the first gala but it will be an annual event. There were about 300 people there and it was at the Canadian Golf and Country Club in Ashton, which was a real trek for this urbanite, but it was worth it. There was a silent auction, we ate a 3-course meal, we got to mingle, and there was also dancing. Lots of local businesses and local celebrities (like a radio station DJ) volunteered their time there. The Mayor of Ottawa even made an appearance, and also the CHEO Bear Mascot. I had a great time and I loved that I got to dress up and wear one on my many fascinators, lol ;)
