    Comptoir Libanais - Lamb Kofta

I was in the mood for Mediterranean and there it was across from Costa Coffee, offering the FLAVOURS OF LEBANON. The ambiance was laid back and reminiscent of an Arabian outdoor garden, including climbing vines and flowers, hanging lights and intricate tile designs, all whilst Arabic music played in the background. The lamb kofta was deliciously seasoned & the vegetarian mezze very nice as well. I would have given 5 stars if the wait from the kitchen wasn't so long. However, I will def return on my next visit to Chester. *gratuity included.

We had a choice of places to eat here with Yo Sushi nearby, but it has become way too overpriced for what it is, and Tampopo which was also nearby, but we remembered that the last time we ate there the portions were just mean and the food wasn't hot. So in here it was. It's an open kitchen but I suspect most of the dips are factory made off site and plated here. We ordered a mezze platter for one and a mixed grill main consisting of chicken & lamb which came (served fairly cold) with a salad and a choice of spicy potato (the waitress declared the potatoes weren't that spicy) rice or cous cous. Cous cous was instantly our choice and it was very good. The food was refreshingly delicious with fresh herbs lifting the taste buds to another level. The salad with the mixed grill was ace tasting. The mezze plate was entirely vegetarian with some vegan food on the plate. The portions were mostly generous, but only one small falafel; should be two. Whilst it was all delicious the smoked aubergine and the baba ghanuj were really stand - out stunning and the flat bread on the side was a wonderful vehicle to dunk and munch. The service was friendly, but on the slow side and we got the wrong bill at the end of our meal. It was also odd to hear that only credit card payments were accepted and one couldn't put a tip onto the card payment either. We were fine with card payment and if we can't tip than that's that but it would be good manners if not necessary to tell guests this before they are seated or put a note on the window. Solid three stars - if the hot food was hot and the service focussed it would be four stars but if I'm not getting tips I wouldn't be super efficient either and to management - it's not rocket science guys & gals.

    Nando's - Medium Chicken Butterfly with Peri-Chips and Creamy Mash (2024) £15.20

The location is good for those shopping at Cheshire Oaks or Coliseum Leisure Park, although the latter just seems so miserable, dead and almost abandoned. I've visited this particular Nando's now, and standards are OK, I've certainly had better in a Nando's, yet I've also had worse. The interior is fairly comfortable, and there's a good number of booths. I did find the food expensive for what it is, as of October 2024, my meal came to £15.20, which I find to be rather expensive for fast casual, and that doesn't include extras such as drinks and Perinaise. The prices also seem to be rising out of control, even in the current climate, they seem to be putting their prices up every couple of months, much more frequently than rivals. Despite being a chicken restaurant, they don't offer regular mayonnaise, so you'll have to choose between their vegan alternative or pay extra for their Peri-naise (mayonnaise mixed with peri-peri sauce). I ordered a Medium Chicken Butterfly with peri chips and mash. Despite ordering the peri chips, they didn't season the chips themselves as Nando's usually does, which I found odd, they just served my food with the sachet of salt on the side. I don't know why, but I always find it tastes better out of the shaker. The chicken had nice flavours but was a little overcooked for my liking, and the mash did require some mashing with my fork as it just looked and tasted microwaved. The staff were friendly, and we shared a joke about the fact I visit often enough to remember my Nando's card number and service was reasonably fast in receiving the food. 3* - OK, The staff were friendly and the food was fine, but I've certainly had a lot better and wouldn't rush back to this specific Nando's location in the future.

Farmers Arms - From the website

She…read morehadn't been here before and may have picked up this claim on their website: "The local vegetarians and vegans, who regularly eat in both the Bar and Southwell's Restaurant, say we have the best selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes in the area." As a vegetarian myself, and having cycled past the Farmers Arms on many occasions, it seemed worth a go. We ate in the bar, but from a passing glance on the way in the restaurant looks very luxurious by any standards, let alone for a pub restaurant in these parts! The bar does the English pub ambience reasonably well, with a warm glow from the woodburning stove. Staff were friendly and welcoming throughout our visit. We both ordered some sort of curry from the six or so choices on the vegan/vegetarian menu. While my overall experience of Farmers Arms was OK, the food was definitely sub-standard. The curry itself, both my companion and I thought had a strange after-taste. I suggested at the time that this might come from some indian vegetable or herb, but it dawned on us later that a green potato was a likelier explanation. Which doesn't really surprise me, as the veg was a hodge-podge of roughly cut baby potatoes, julienne carrots, uncaramelised onions and nothing else outstanding. The curry sauce was thin and unappetising - even a scoop of a Patak's jarred curry sauce would have been a big improvement. Poppadom on top (OK) and by far the highlight of the meal was the food service chips served as part of my friend's half rice/half chips. Coffee after the meal for the lady was "bog standard" in her words. En route, we had passed from Fir Tree Farm Christmas Market into the farm shop and cafe itself. There don't seem to be menus on the tables these days at Fir Tree, only a short, daily changing blackboard menu. If it were all about a safe bet for wholesome sustenance, a bowl of soup at Fir Tree would wins hands down every time. But one needs to take a chance, and here is hoping that the next throw of the dice turns out a bit luckier! It wouldn't surprise me to read a good review of vegetarian food served especially from the restaurant at Farmers Arms. But I feel it somebody else's job to take a chance on that one!
