Despite having moved 3 times / the consistency of deliciousness here remains. Staff are always friendly and welcoming - but its the sandwiches that really keep me coming back every time I'm in Stratford. The newest location is right by the river - with lots of public parking across the street. Beautiful old building and a nicer overall decor than the previous spot. Still colourful - with cool drawings of their famous sandwiches on the walls. Lots on offer, but really, who am I kidding? "Mennonite sandwich, please" is what I said - and what you better say if you know what's good for ya. That delicious summer sausage, fresh corn relish with a subtle but delicious kick of spice. The cheddar - classic taste - nice slice - just how I like it. Definitely not processed cheese. The fresh country white bread - melt in your mouth but still with a crunchy brown crust. MMMMMMMMMennonites seem to have the secret of sandwich making down pat. This is the kind of sandwich that puts hair on your chest...What's that joke - why do Mennonite boys grow beards? Because they want to look just like their moms! Lol a bit off side maybe there - but my point is simple - a hearty, tasty sandwich - one of the best and most classic available in Ontario. I enjoy the Othello (sans pesto, of course) but most often create-my-own. Last time I was there I had local goats cheese (swoon-inducing) on multigrain (OMG freshly-baked and so so so good) with alfalfa sprouts, tomatoes, cucumbers, avocados, lettuce, roasted sweet red peppers, honey mustard (made by local mennonites!) & mayo. I always add the "deli dills" - I'm pretty sure they're local mennonite too. Needless to say, PHENOMENAL. They also have THE MOST AMAZING 4-bean salad. Try it. Trust me. I don't even LIKE bean salad all that much... this one converted me. Really. GET IT. They lose a star because it's time to fix the service. It takes waaay too long to get your food, and that's true whether you eat in or order from the take-out window. Service is a bit better for breakfast, but still nothing to rave about. Expect to wait 20-30 minutes for your food. The kitchen & waitstaff are unfortunately more often than not visibly frazzled/stressed. I have been here for breakfast a bunch of times, as well as dinner once or twice. I LOVE LOVE LOVE their jam - "moss berry" - never heard of it before or since! For dinner, I've had the Spinach, Marinated Mushroom, Red Onion and Goat Cheese Pizza ($6.50) as well as the Caramelized Broccoli, Red Onion and Ricotta Stuffed Pasta Shells baked in a our slow-cooked Tomato Sauce ($13.95). Both VERY yummy. Their breakfast burrito is legendary. I must recommend it as your first breakfast expedition at YSK. For meat-eaters, try the peameal bacon. LOCAL PORK FACTOIDS: A note on peameal bacon + Stratford: this is prime peameal bacon territory. If you don't make it to YSK, try to get to the Stratford Farmer's Market where you will find a chuckwagon of sorts vending DREAMY peameal bacon sandwiches. OMG. AMAZING. Perth County produces some of the best pork in the country. If you're passing through Shakespeare on the way to Stratford (or back - it's just east of Stratford), make a stop at "The Best Little Pork Shoppe", which is certainly NOT little. Popular sandwich place at a new location. Sandwiches are good. The take out window is very popular--get sandwiches and go picnic by the river. Reasonable prices. I was disappointed by the service. I hate mayo. I specifically asked the server if the Thai chicken salad sandwich had mayo in it. She faltered and then said no. Of course it did. We were in a hurry and it was not lots of mayo so I lived with it. It's a standard sandwich--she should know...or should have asked the cook. It was an okay sandwich but not fabulous. I was in Stratford for the day and saw the reviews for York Street Kitchen and thought I would give it a try. I was not disappointed, I had the The BBQ steak Club and it was delicious. My two companions each made to order their lunches. Everyone had only great things to say. I love supporting local establishments and will definitely be back. I've eaten here several times with it being so close to work. It's one of the more healthy options in this area. Take out is great. Sitting in can be a bit of a wait on your food, but when it's being made fresh right then and there it can be worth the wait. In house seating is a small area, and limited outside during nice weather but with the river so close and lots of seating there, it can be nice to get the food to go and sit near the river. I would recommend this as a good place to get food! read more

Very nice service at take out window. Reasonable prices. BUT...ordered a tuna sandwich ..the Mikado.. it had a lot of tuna and veg on the sandwich so that is positive. I walked around the corner to sit and eat...the runny mayo literally dropped out the bag. The bread was so wet it was paste. I had to get a fork,,,scrape the soggy bread off and just eat the tuna once I pressed the liquid out. Disappointed read more

First off, let me say that I have eaten at the York Street Kitchen. Their food is delicious. Or at least it was at the two previous locations. They have always been slow but when we went there yesterday, we sat for over ten minutes without so much as eye contact from any of the staff. And it just wasn't that busy. Food was good on a busy spring Saturday. We ate on the outside patio (which was not noted on the original listing). Everything was clean, the staff was happy and the menu was great. We had the Mennonite sandwich (VERY good) and a make your own corned beef sandwich (very good). The sandwich came with one stick of celery and a carrot. I have now had the pleasure of working with York Street Kitchen on several occasions, organizing bagged lunches for co-workers visiting from New York City. Every detail is handled with care and efficiency. They are very communicative via phone and email, orders are prepared perfectly and my people are happy. What more do you want? Recommended are the Mennonite Sandwich, Thai Chicken Salad Sandwich and Veggie Wrap. They are all prepared fresh with excellent ingredients. I am rather surprised at some of the low reviews for this little place. I came here in the fall while on a whirlwind weekend of plays with some other professors and grad students (5 plays in 3 days!) My favorite thing about it was the down home Canadian comfort food and atmosphere. The outside reminds me of the tiny cafes in rural English villages... or maybe even like being in your great aunt's kitchen. SO CUTE. I had a delicious vegetarian sandwich, and pot of tea, and an amazing apple pie dessert. We told our waitress our waitress we needed to get out by 7:30 for our evening play, and she got us in and out in plenty of time. I definitely plan on coming back in next time in town! While I can't say I was very impressed with Stratford, I did love this place. We were looking for a place to eat lunch and we saw a crowd of people outside this place so we decided to check it out. The indoor dining area is a little small and was literally full of flies (at one point I saw 5 on the tablecloth...) but don't let deter you from coming here. They were a little short staffed but the women working there were so nice! You could tell that they were doing the best they could. Definitely order the specials. We ordered the BBQ Chicken Club and the Gobbler sandwich with a side of potato salad. The sandwiches were great and the ingredients were really fresh and a pretty good deal. The make your own sandwiches could add up pretty quick. The portion of the salad was generous as well and was enough to share. If I lived in the area I'd totally be back, but I don't think I'll ever be back in Stratford. Not worth the drive but if you're in the area, DEFINITELY check this place out. read more

Went during our short stay in Stratford over the Ontario Simcoe day long weekend. Was the ONLY option we found open for a brunch. We did not know it was only sandwiches until after we sat down. That was ok since we all saw breakfast sandwiches we would have. But then - like a twist in a Shakespearean play - my Stratford tie in :) - they only served Breakfast until 11 am! We were devastated - and hungry - so we ordered other sandwiches. These were quite good - and fresh. I enjoyed mine actually - a New Yorker sans mayo. One of our party constructed a ham and cheese + sandwich, which was thoroughly enjoyed as well. The other two in our party also got New Yorkers (no imagination!), and also devoured them. Now - the sandwiches were good, but not as amazing as some of the ones I have had at the St Lawrence Market or Katz's Deli in Toronto. But then Katz's only does the one thing, and needs to compete in Toronto. This is Stratford and we were happy to get something this morning (well almost lunch) on this holiday. Would we come here again - maybe, but only with the expectation of sandwiches. What was good - the surrounds were quite nice, the dishes and ceramic tea pots were fun. Printed patterns and paintings on the plates were neat and fi right into the surroundings. The staff was friendly and always around - but then the place is so small you can't miss them if you sit inside. The food was good for sandwiches and was like what I would make at home. What missed - the wait staff seem a bit inexperienced. The place inside is small (but to be fair this likely part of the business model - i.e The Kitchen). The food was only adequate and could have been a home run, given the fresh ingredients! Just a few more of each would have been great - the combos certainly were! Unique and consistently delicious sandwiches - unusually high-quality for Stratford. Definitely our go-to lunch place when we're in town. Since they've moved to their new location (for years they were on York Street until increasing rent forced them to move), it's more mellow and the service seems more friendly too, though their food is exactly the same (which is a good thing!). While there are a couple other decent lunch places popping up now, for a long time York Street Kitchen was the *only* bearable lunch in town. I'd say it still continues to serve the best sandwiches around, though, so I have a lot of respect for them. read more

Half sammy and soup. Solid solid meal. Yum. Didn't rely on fats and salt to make these work. Very carefully crafted flavours, and some clever combinations in the soup. Smart chef. So many good ideas knocking around this place. Love the chalk wall of Canada where they source ingredients, and the dining area is gorgeous. Not a cheap lunch, but not going to nail your wallet either, and this place is so worth it. read more

I've been frequenting York Steet Kitchen since my high school drama class trip days. Apart from the odd location on Erie now, it's a great standby for excellent sandwiches with a myriad of options for fillings. You can buy picnic fare at a host of other places, but York Street just has a special place in my heart for a big old sandwich with lots of flavor eaten on a bench by the water. This place had a pretty nice atmosphere, so I had some high hopes. However, the food was only ok. The mashed potatoes that came with my meal were incredibly over salted. The real problem with this place is that it seems to have been abandoned by its management and left in the hands of teenagers. Not that there's anything wrong with the staff, they're nice enough, but serving customers seems to be a secondary concern. We were at a Coffee Culture, and my wife was looking for a home-brewed iced tea. They didn't have any, but another customer (a young, toothless local) suggested we try the York St Kitchen. The iced tea was nice, but it was the sandwiches that made it worth the hike across town. My wife is Mexican-Canadian, so she ordered the Mennonite sandwich, which contained delicious local summer sausage. I had a roast beef special. Both blew our minds. All the ingredients were very fresh, and we were perplexed at how the meals were economically viable, given the $6-7 price tag. We concluded we must have missed the lunch time rush. But I digress. We went here since we thought it'd be a healthier option. We were sadly disappointed. My bf got the pork chop in a sandwich and I got the pork carnitas. Both orders had the request to hold tomatoes ignored. Both were super soggy and fell apart as you picked them up. The pork or sauce was bitter. We couldn't even finish it. The iced tea and beer served in dirty glasses did not help. At this point, Subway or McDonald's would have been better. read more

Good cheapish food option in Stratford. Went for lunch. Sadly they stop serving breakfast at 11am which seems pretty early, especially on the weekend. I had the kitchen sink salad with tuna and the carrot and squash soup. Both were good. My friend liked his curried chicken sandwich. The place was a little hectic and small. We did have to wait a minute for a table. So don't try and quickly go before the show in case they get a rush. Leave a little time to relax. Nice outdoor seating. York Street Kitchen is our "go to " place for breakfast and lunch when we are at the Stratford Festival. Breakfast Burito, French toast, and BLT are as good as it gets. We salivate as we approach and try to decide for today, leaving the others for subsequent mornings. After a YSK breakfast we split one of their freshly made sandwiches for lunch before theater. Much of the fun is chatting with others around the sandwich window. In the mornings the locals gather to share with Susie and her amazing crew. The sandwiches are good, the service is slow, the old location was packed so I imagine the new location is like sardines in a tin. I am allergic to sunflower seeds so I asked for a different bread and was given a sandwich on multigrain with sunflower seeds. It was a take-out order and I realized too late. The sandwich had to be thrown away. I can't afford a mistake like that so I just don't eat there. If you don't have time, to wait or go back when your order is incorrect, don't bother. read more

Checked out this poor excuse for a kitchen on a recent Stratford visit. My mate ordered the Thai chicken salad sandwich: what a disappointment- the most uninspired sad sack of a sandwich I've had the misfortune of sampling in I don't know how long. How 'Thai' got into the label for this false start is beyond me. It came with nothing- not a lone baby carrot, not even half a pickle, God forbid a tiny stem of celery- the presentation a stark spectacle of premium-priced cheapness. I made the innocent mistake of ordering the Seafood Chowder- which arrived cold, of course, befitting the calibre of the rest of the 'meal'. Certainly the poorest excuse for Seafood Chowder I've ever had the misfortune of encountering- a thin, anemic, dull-as-dishwater gruel- accompanied by two greasy hunks of starch that were supposed to be garlic bread but proved more akin to landfill. And the prices! A cup of this so-called chowder clocks in at six bucks- as an entrée, it's 14, the difference being but a couple ounces (tops) more slop than for the side. This place is a rip-off! Unnecessarily awful experience. It's unclear whether one is to go inside to the counter or wait for outdoor table service (it's the latter, so a "please be seated" sign might be useful). When the coffee did arrive, it came in a mug with lipstick and food particles on it. My waitress not coming back outside for a very long time, I pointed it out to another, who brought me another mug. Realizing that I'd not mentioned to this other waitress that I'd had decaf, I went inside to inquire. She volunteered that it was okay, b/c she had just poured the old coffee into a new mug. Why would any patron want the same coffee that had been in an unclean mug poured into another? So the sandwich comes, it's kind of floppy, but there were no utensils brought out with it, and no wait staff coming outside, so it was necessary either to eat with fingers the tuna salad, and mushy tomatoes and avocado that fell off. And no water offered or brought either. What are these folks thinking? read more
